One of the best known American writers of children's books is Alfred Strong, or Doctor Strong, as he is better known to readers everywhere. Now, an art show called Doctor Strong from Then to Now is traveling around the United States. The pictures and drawings show the history of Doctor Strong.
Doctor Strong first became famous almost fifty years ago when his first children's book was published. Since then he has written forty-five books that have sold more than 1,000,000 copies around the world.

The San Diego Museum, in California, organized the art show. It includes about three hundred of Doctor Strong's original drawings and some of his writings.
Most of Doctor Strong's books, though written in a funny way, have serious messages. For example, in McElligor's Pool, he describes the dangers of pollution. He discusses the arms race in the Butter Battle Book, written in 1984.

Casablanca, a musical based on the 1942 Hollywood classic of the same name, is to be staged from April 8 to 12 at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Inspired by the original black-and-white film, the set for the musical has been modeled after the film's famous Rick's Cafe.
Explaining why he adapted(改编)this classic film to the stage, producer John Clifford said he loved the movie and believed that such a wonderful story would be excellent in any form.
But this project is costly and although Warner Brothers is footing the bill, doubts have been voiced about the play's high expense. Still, Clifford did manage to persuade Warner Brothers with promises that the production would improve on the film.
The show mixes various forms of the performing arts including jazz, ballet and tap dancing.
The producer also said the musical kept all of the film's original music and added some specially-made pieces for the onstage performance.
But can Chinese people understand this American musical? Clifford thought the production would be a big hit because the emotions of the lead roles would be clearly expressed in their movements.

While running for president, Barack Obama often talked about his mother, Ann Dunham, and the lessons she taught him through her work with poor rural communities around the world. Dunham died of cancer in 1995, before any of her grandchildren were born.
Now Barack Obama's sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, has written Ladder to the Moon, a children's book that attempts to connect her young daughter, Suhaila, with the grandmother she never knew.
The book's title was inspired by a picture postcard Dunham gave Maya as a child. It features a painting by Georgia O'Keeffe, which depicts a ladder floating against the night sky, with a half-moon high above it.
In the book, little Suhaila asks her mother what her grandmother was like. “Like the moon,” her mother replies. “Full, soft and curious.” Suhaila longs to meet her, and one night, her wish comes true. A golden ladder appears at her window and Grandma Annie invites the girl to come along on a magical journey.
“The book is about an evening spent helping others to come up to the moon after natural disasters and religious conflicts,” says Soetoro-Ng. “And the moon becomes an imagined place to heal and rest until we laugh loudly again.”
It seemed natural for Soetoro-Ng to connect her daughter with Grandma Annie through the moon. Her mother, she says, always loved the moon because it was the same for everybody, no matter where in the world they were. Under the glow of the moon, she recalls, her mother shared her most meaningful tales with her children.
That's how Soetoro-Ng says she, her brother and President Obama, remember their mother—as a great story teller and role model.
“Like me, he feels that she's someone who gave us a strong moral compass, and that she gave us compassion and desire to recognize the things that are common to all humanity and reach out across the divides even when doing so is hard,” she says. “That's something extremely valuable.”
It wasn't just her mother's tales that shaped who she and her brother have become. Soetoro-Ng says what parents do is more important than what they say. Dunham, who had a PhD in anthropology, worked in rural development in some of the poorest places in the world.
最近,奥巴马的妹妹Maya Soetoro-Ng写了一本新书《通向月亮的梯子》,介绍了一些关于她母亲的趣事。
4.By writing Ladder to the Moon, Maya intends to________.
A. show her mother's strong influence
B. express her mother's love
C. stress the importance of good parenting
D. let her daughter know about her grandmother
答案:D 细节理解题。根据第二段的内容可判断出,奥巴马的妹妹写书的目的是让女儿了解外婆。
5.The underlined word “depicts” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”.
A. draws B. shows
C. resembles D. represents

6.Maya connects her mother with the moon because________.
A. her mother resembled the moon in some way
B. her mother was just as beautiful as the moon
C. she loved reading with her mother under the moon
D. she used to work with her mother in the open air

参考范文:
Once upon a time there was a farmer who worked hard in the fields every day. One day, while he was ploughing the field, he heard a bumping sound. He saw a rabbit lying by the trunk. He picked it up and found that it was a fat rabbit. He thought to himself, “Since it is so easy to get a rabbit like that, why should I work so hard all day long?”He threw his hoe away and lay by the tree every day, dreaming for more rabbits to come. When he finally realized his foolishness and returned to his fields, he found that all his crops were dead. This story tells us that only by working hard not by chance and luck should we wait for expected gains. Or, we should not hope to get rewards without hard work. Remember, “No pains,no gains!”

Ⅴ.阅读理解
It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men would become fierce tigers behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the driver's seat is another matter.
Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense. It takes the most cool-headed drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling and fighting. A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere in modern traffic conditions. But such behavior of politeness is by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays don't even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it.
However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. A typical example is encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want to.
An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in traffic stream without causing the blockage(阻塞) that gave rise to unpleasant feelings. Unfortunately, some modern drivers can't even learn to drive, let alone master the roadmanship(公路驾车技能). Years ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give-and-take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take action.
