Unit 5 Literature:The Dream Keeper
Everybody has his dreams or wishes. For example, some want to be artists; some want to be scientists; some want to go to travel in the outer space like Yang Liwei, China's first astronaut going out into space. Such dreams or wishes should be regarded as our purpose of life. Many people even devote their lives to them.
What're your dreams? How can you realize them? If you can't reach your goal after great efforts, what should you do?

A man shot Martin Luther King in Atlanta on 4th April, 1968. He drove a white Ford car. Who was he? The police found "Harvery Lowmeyer's" gun and "John Willard's" shirt, and then the white car. It was "Eric Starvo Galt's" car. So what was this man's real name? Marks on the shirt and the car were sent to Los Angeles. 300 detectives questioned people. At last one found a photograph of "Galt". Then detectives in Atlanta found a fingerprint. It was on a map in "Galt's" room in a small hotel. One fingerprint was enough. James Earls Ray's fingerprints were already on the FBI cards. The police watched railway stations, hotels, and airports, 3 000 detectives were trying to find Ray. Yet things went unsuccessful. The Canadian police were helping too. They looked at 24 000 photographs in the passport office. Then they found one of" Ramon George Sneyd". "We gave this man a passport last month", they said. "He went to London on 2nd May." The man was wearing thick glasses, but he looked like Ray. Then on 8th June, a detective at London Airport saw Sneyd's name on a passenger list. It was the end of the biggest man-hunt in history. All of us have often seen cowboys on the screen. People who enjoy watching Westerns usually think they know exactly what cowboys in 19th century America were like. But the picture of a cowboy's life that is shown in films is a actually far from the truth.
Cowboys in Westerns are always white, aren't they? But in actual fact, the 19th century cowboys were often black or brown(Mexican). There were even a few Indian cowboys, especially in Oklahoma. The cowboys that appear in films don't show at work with their cattle; they seem to spend their time quite differently. The Hollywood cowboy hero never stops chasing bandits(强盗)and rescuing pretty young ladies from dangerous situations; he is able to use his gun at fantastic speed, and keeps on fighting bravely to the end.
Real cowboys in those days had little time chasing bandits. They had to work hard, they usually worked 10~14 hours a day, summer and winter. The cattle had to be rounded up and then the cowboys drove them many long miles to the railway stations, where they were taken by train to slaughter(屠宰)houses in Chicago and Kansas City. To get the cattle from Texas to the nearest railroad stations was the cowboys' most difficult job. It usually took two or three months, and during that time the cowboys always had to stay with the cattle;they swam across rivers with them and tried to round them up after stampedes(惊跑). Millions of animals were driven from Texas
up to Kansas in this way.
5.The cowboys' life shown in films is ______.
    A. quite instructive B. realistic
    C. far from the truth D. telling the truth
6.In the l9th century, the cowboys' main job was ______.
    A. chasing bandits
    B. rescuing pretty young ladies from dangerous situations
    C. using their guns at fantastic speed
    D. rounding Up the cattle and driving them to the railway station
7.The underlined word "chasing" in paragraph 2 means ______.
    A. taking care of B. looking for
    C. running after D. setting off
8.From the passage we can draw the conclusion that cowboys' life and work was ______.
    A. romantic B. hard
    C. interesting D. exciting
C
When I was a small child, the excitement of Christmas began on December 1. I woke up early and ran to wake my mum, pulling at her arm and saying, "Can we put up the Christmas tree now?" Once this was done, the countdown to Christmas really started.
On Christmas Eve, I went to bed early, but couldn't sleep. As I tried to sleep, I prayed that I'd been good enough for Santa to come.
I thought I would never sleep, but I must have eventually slept, because, when I awoke, I felt something heavy at the end of my bed. I didn't know whether to open my eyes. My mum had told me that if you see Santa, he will disappear before he has a chance to leave your presents.
At last I opened one eye, and saw the stocking full of presents at the end of my bed. I shouted at my little sister to wake up before running into my brother's room. Feeling happy and excited, the three of us dragged out stockings to our mum's bedroom.
We raced from one to the next, shaking them to try to guess what was inside, before tearing off the wrapping paper. Once we had opened these small presents, we all went downstairs for breakfast. We rushed our meal without chewing our food. We knew that more presents were waiting for us under the tree--gifts from family and friends.
As soon as our breakfast had disappeared, we raced each other to the living room, fighting to be the first one through the door.
What we saw was the same every year, presents piled up with our names written on them. My mum tried to keep us calm by passing each of us one present at a time. But we were too excited to let her go so slowly.
She always made us wait until after lunch to open our last few presents.
Christmas was always the happiest day of the year for me when I was young. But not just because of the presents. Seeing each member of my family happy was what made-and still makes-Christmas special in my house.
9.What is the best title of the passage?
    A. The Best Christmas Present of All.
    B. The Exciting Moment of the Year.
    C. The Happiest Time Children Shared.
    D. The Most Excited Children.
  答案:A
10.What does the underlined part show?
    A. They were unkind to each other.
    B. They were curious to see the presents.
    C. They were crazy about the presents.
    D. They were too happy to behave properly.
11.Why was Christmas always the happiest day of the year for the writer?
    A. There were so many presents for the children.
    B. They could wait for the Santa Claus to come.
    C. There was a happy atmosphere in the family.
    D. They ate as much food as they could.
12.What conclusion can wed raw from the passage?
    A. Nobody has ever seen Santa Claus.
    B. Mum was "Santa" as a matter of fact.
    C. In fact Christmas began on December.
    D. Now Christmas is still the happiest time for the writer。
A选项不能从本文得出;B选项有可能,但却不完全,如果加上“in the writer's family”就行了;C项是“the countdown”(倒计时)的时间,而不是圣诞节的时间;D项可以从最后一句话中“and still makes”的现在时态看出。
  答案:D
D
The trees arrived by post, a half-open parcel. They were thin and straight, rather like arrows but with shiny leaves at one end and muddy roots at the other. Terry and his father took them down to the garden and planted them in their prepared places. Terry had great hopes for the middle tree, now set in the holy spot where Henry, his cat, run over, had been laid to rest a year before. The nine trees made an avenue down one side of the garden, where there was already a fifteen-foot stone wall between the garden and the back yards of the Jenkins Street houses.
"Why do we want a row of trees as well as a wall? "Terry asked his father. His father said, "For privacy. These trees grow very thickly."
His father's love of privacy often puzzled Terry, who was not one to keep himself to himself, but he could see part of the point here. The houses in Jenkins Street were on higher ground. His father lived in number twelve, and he had only to stand on a box to see right over the wall.
"Will the trees grow higher than the wall?" Terry asked then. "Oh yes, twice as high if not more. It'll take a few years but they'll grow."
So they were going to have nine trees thirty feet tall, to keep them from being overlooked. Terry wondered why this was so desirable(向往的). He said, "Our garden is very pretty. Why can't we let the people over the wall see it? That wouldn't be showing off, would it?"
"No, I don't think it would be, "his father said," Yet some people might feel a bit less happy if they can always see a good thing isn't theirs. We don't want to be the cause of any jealousy if we can help it."
This consideration for other people's feelings must be a grown-up thing, Terry thought. It was not his idea of how to run things. He said," It seems a lot of trouble to go to stop people being jealous of us."
His father looked at him. "It isn't much trouble, "he said," these trees will grow without help from us. They'll be beautiful. And you can already hear them whispering to us in the wind."
13.How do we know that Terry's father was expecting the trees?
    A. He thought they would grow tall and thick.
    B. He expected them to be delivered by post.
    C. He and Terry had dug holes for them.
    D. The parcel was half-open so that he could see the trees.
14.Terry called a part of the garden "the holy spot" , because ______.
    A. His cat was buried there
    B. Henry had run over there
    C. Terry's own tree was planted there.
    D. it was the middle of the garden.
第一段提到,把中间的树种在了“the holy spot”(神圣的地方),紧接着的定语从句说明Terry的猫“run over”(被压死),“had been laid to rest a year before”(一年前被放在那儿休息),可见猫已死,被埋在那儿。
  答案:A
15.What does the underlined word "jealousy" mean?
    A. Feeling happy when seeing others planting trees.
    B. Feeling unhappy when seeing others are better.
    C. Being helpful when others need help.
    D. Being troubled when seeing others grow up.
Yet some people might feel a bit less happy if they can always see a good thing isn't theirs.”
  答案:B
  16.What didn't Terry agree with?
    A. Letting their neighbors know what happened in their garden.
    B. The way their neighbors treat his family.
    C. His father's concern for people's feelings.
    D. His father's effort of hiding the trees in the garden.
E
On January 16th, space shuttle(航天飞机)Columbia lifted off from Cape Canaveral. Seven crewmembers including the first Israel astronaut were aborad NASA's oldest shuttle and soared into the space.
Shortly after Columbia lifted off, a piece of insulating(绝缘)foam(泡沫塑料)from the shuttle's external tank came off and was believed to have hit the left wing of the space craft. But NASA officials quickly reassured the public that pose little danger to the mission. The shuttle flight was the ll3th in the shuttle program and the 28th flight for Columbia.
The space craft crew was relatively inexperienced by recent standard in the 22-year-old program. Only three of the seven have flown into space before, including the shuttle commander. The other four are rookies, including the Israel's first astronaut Ilan Ramon. Columbia crew have completed more than 80 scientific research experiments during the time in orbit(轨道).
Mission control radios, "Columbia, Houston, we see your tire pressure messages and we did not copy your last." Columbia's commander, Rick Husband, calmly responds, "Roger, uh, buh…"
The shuttle was at announced altitude of about 203 000 feet over north central Texas when mission control lost all contact and tracking data.
Shortly after NASA lost contact, residents of Texas Arizona Louisiana reported hearing a loud sound and seeing flaming in the sky 9:16 a.m. was Columbia's schedule landing and video shuttle debris(碎片,残骸)streaking to the sky appeared on news reports. NASA began to warn residents to stay away from the crashed debris. By late morning of February the first, NASA had lowered the half-staff of the flag next to the countdown clock Cape Canaveral and began counting the cause of the loss of Columbia and its crew.
17.After the foam incident, NASA told the public that ______
    A. there was no danger to the mission
    B. there was a little danger to the mission
    C. they knew nothing about the incident
    D. the lifting off was perfect
B项“a little danger”表示肯定,和原文中的“little danger(表示否定)”有出入。
  答案:A
18.The underlined word "rookies" probably is closest in meaning "people ______."
    A. who are good at doing sth

    D. In the 22 years, space shuttles have completed 130 flights.
20.From the last sentence we can infer that ______.
    A. the reason for the loss of Columbia is still not clear
    B. the reason for the loss of Columbia is discovered
    C. the reason for the loss of Columbia is already announced
    D. the reason for the loss of Columbia is a secret
  答案:A

But only four days later the shoes were worn out, so I was angry and returned to the shop hoping to get back my money. I told him what had happened to my shoes. When he knew I had kept the shoes for four days, he refused, which made me surprised. I asked him why he didn't keep his promise. The seller said, "Do you understand the 'three guarantee?'
