Everything has its place and no one understands a concept better than 7-year-old Jacob Dunnack of Willimantic, Connecticut. Though Jacob feels that his place is on the baseball field, on the rare occasions when he’s not outside playing, his ball has a place of its own, safe and secure inside its bat.
Last year after experiencing difficulty carrying both his ball and bat home, Jacob invented the JD Batball- a 22-inch baseball bat inside which baseballs can be stored.
While most people find his accomplishment at such a young age inspiring, his mother, Elizabeth Dunnack, says that the heart of the matter lies in Jacob’s amazing spirit and will to live.
“You see,” his mother says,“Jacob was born with a rare heart disease and at four days old he had the first of a series of operations. At 11 months old, a ten hour open-heart operation resulted in a serious stroke. The doctor said that Jacob would be blind and disabled permanently.”
She continues, “With a lot of hard work and loving support over many years, today Jacob cannot only see, but walk and, through his own determination, even play baseball!”
Even though the stroke caused Jacob to lose the use of his right hand, this didn’t stop him from pursuing his favorite sport as he grew older. When he had trouble carrying both the bat and the ball home, that’s when he came up with the idea of storing the ball inside the bat so that he could carry both with one hand.
While he developed it because of his disability, the JD Batball is an extremely useful tool for kids across the country who play baseball, helping to solve the problems of losing the ball. “This invention is not only going to thrill children, but also their parents!” commented Jacob’s mother.
24.What do we know about Jacob from the first paragraph
A.He thinks his bat and ball should be put in separate places.
B.He spends a lot of time playing baseball.
C.He is a great baseball player.
D.He often loses his ball.

B.wanted to carry more balls to the baseball field
C.was not able to carry both his bat and ball
D.wanted to help other children who often lose balls
27.What would be the best title for the passage
A.Jacob’s Place B.The Bat and the Ball
C.Jacob and His Favorite Sport D.7-year-old Survivor and Inventor

There is a picture: A polar bear is lying lifeless on a beach. On the shore, in the background, stand three guards, talking to each other. One of them has a gun hanging casually on his shoulder. This powerful image has made people question the motivation (动机) for this kind of tourism, or ecotourism. Does our proximity (接近) to large animals in the wild, frequently caused by a desire for exciting images, lead to such animals becoming accustomed to (习惯于) human contact If that is the case, surely the losing side will end up paying the price for such proximity.
To my sorrow, I have recently returned from a trip to Svalbard, and stood two weeks ago on the very beach where the bear was shot. The bear’s death should never have happened. Was the beach examined beforehand Was there access to flares (照明弹) to scare off a bear that appeared suddenly These are standard measures for any operator. The incident is probably the result of a terrible systematic (制度的) failure.
However, the incident should not deny the value of ecotourism. In its best form, this kind of travel has very little influence, or indeed has a positive effect, on the environment where it takes place. This can be achieved by making financial donations to conservation groups, providing income to local communities, or ensuring protection of certain areas or animals. In Svalbard, visitors become ambassadors (大使) for the endangered polar bear, increasing awareness of the fact that the far greater danger they are facing is the sea ice melt in the Arctic Ocean.
Ecotourism is an expanding market that brings benefits as well as challenges to the regions around the world in which it operates. Simply closing off these regions is not the answer.
28.Why was the polar bear dead
A.It was probably killed by tourists.
B.It was probably frightened to death by flares.
C.The proper rules weren’t probably followed.
D.The beach wasn’t probably equipped with safety equipment.
29.What is the third paragraph mainly about
A.Ecotourism could be developed properly.
B.Financial donations should be strongly encouraged.
C.Environmental awareness has greatly increased.
D.Visitors are ashamed of ecotourism.
30.What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph suggest
A.More challenges haven’t yet been accepted.
B.Better measures for leading ecotourism are a good choice.
C.The environmental benefits from ecotourism are very obvious.
D.The positive effects of protecting tourists haven’t yet been felt.
31.What is the purpose of the text
A.To urge readers to focus on polar bears.
B.To make readers reflect on ecotourism.
C.To stress negative effects that ecotourism has caused.
D.To analyse the reason why the polar bear was killed.
D
It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men would become fierce tigers behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the driver’s seat is another matter.
Road politeness is not only good manners, but a good sense. It takes the most cool-headed drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling and fighting. A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of good will and becomes so necessary in modern traffic conditions. But such behaviors of politeness are by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays don’t even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it.
However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. A typical example is the driver who waves to a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may not be able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want to.
An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in traffic stream without causing total blockages that give rise to unpleasant feelings. Unfortunately, modern drivers can’t even learn to drive, let alone master the roadmanship (公路驾车技能). Years ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give-and-take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.
32.Which of the following can be the best title for this passage
A.Traffic Jams. B.Good Manners.
C.Road Politeness. D.Modem Drivers.
33.What often cause(s) troubles on the road
A.Traffic jams. B.The behaviour of the drivers.
C.The great speed of modem life. D.Terrible road conditions.
34.According to the writer, what should a good driver do
A.Encourage children to cross the road whenever they want to.
B.Beat back when forced to face rude driving.
C.Be able to recognise politeness when he sees it.
D.Join in a traffic stream quickly however other people feel.
35.It is not always right for drivers to _____.
A.master the roadmanship
B.neglect politeness when they see it
C.give a friendly nod in answer to an act of politeness
D.encourage old ladies to cross the road whenever and wherever they want to

For many people today, reading is no longer relaxation. To keep up their work they must read letters, reports, trade publications, interoffice communications, not to mention newspapers and magazines; a never-ending flood of words. In getting a job advancing, the ability to read and comprehend 41 can mean the difference between success and failure. Yet the unfortunate fact is that most of us are 42 readers. Most of us develop poor reading habits at an early age, and never 43 them. The main shortage lies in the actual stuff of language itself – words. Taken individually, words have little 44 until they are combined together into phrases, sentences and paragraphs. Unfortunately, 45 , the untrained reader does not read groups of words. He read one word at a time with difficulty, often regressing to 46 words or passages. Regression, namely, the tendency to look back over what you have just read, is a common 47 habit in reading. Another bad habit which 48 the speed of reading is vocalization –sounding each word either 49 or mentally as one reads.
To overcome these bad habits, some reading clinics use a device called an accelerator, which moves a bar (or curtain) down the page at a predetermined speed. The bar is set a slightly 50 rate than the reader finds comfortable, in order to “ 51 ” him. The accelerator forces the reader to read fast, making word-by-word reading, regression and sub-vocalization, practically 52 . At first comprehension is 53 speed. But when you learn to read ideas and concepts, you will not only read faster, but your comprehension will improve. Many people have found their reading skill 54 improved after some training. Take Charles Au, a business manager, for instance, his reading rate was a reasonably good 172 words a minute before the training, now it is an excellent 1,378 words a minute. He is delighted that now he can go through a lot more reading material in a(n) 55 period of time.

It was a day just like every other day. I woke up early in the morning and went to run on Mount Gracious with my dog, Bubbles. As I ran up the mountain, with my dog following close behind, I felt energetic and refreshed. Running in a natural environment never failed to make me feel alive. When I reached the top, I drank some water and enjoyed the beautiful sunrise. This scene always took my breath away, no matter how many times I had seen it.
Having rested enough, Bubbles and I made our way back down the mountain. As we were running downhill, I saw an unfamiliar path and decided to explore the area. The path was full of rocks. It was not easy to walk.
Suddenly, I slipped on a muddy patch, rolling down five meters before I managed to grab hold of an exposed root of a huge tree. I was safe for now. However, I was seriously injured. My knees were badly hurt. My right foot was also dislocated (脱臼). I knew for sure I would be unable to make my way up or down the mountain without help. I called out to Bubbles and he barked loudly from above. It seemed like he understood that I needed help. He looked down at me pitifully before disappearing from sight.
As night fell, panic (恐慌) set in and scary thoughts went through my mind. There were many things that I had got to do. I couldn't die! This would not have happened if I had stuck to my usual path.
I was losing hope when I heard barking. It was Bubbles. I rubbed my eyes as I struggled to keep awake. But there was silence. Who could it be Was I hallucinating (产生幻觉) Then I heard some voices and more barking. Yes. Help was near, I knew. I could count on my dog to get help.

66.Dear Mr. Brown,
Our class has studied a unit on first aid, which has been more than useful because we’ve learned how to aid someone who has encountered an accident. We hold the view that a first aid course can not only teach us how to carry out first aid in many more situations, but it would also offer us the chance to practise applying the basic knowledge of first aid to emergencies.
Therefore, we would like to request that the school set up a first aid course, because it is a necessary part of our education and will make us become more helpful in our society. Probably we will even save someone’s life one day.
67.One possible version:
Soon, I heard my parents calling my name. So I began calling back. A moment later, I saw the light of a flashlight. Following my voice and with Bubbles leading the way, my parents finally found me. They looked nervous and worried. After learning I was badly hurt, my parents quickly climbed down to me. They examined my cuts and my foot and decided that I had better not walk. Then, my father carried me on his back, down the mountain and to the nearest clinic, where a doctor was waiting for us.
Later, my parents told me what Bubbles had done to get help. He quickly ran home and waited until my parents came home from work. He barked loudly at my parents. They were confused and thought the dog might be hungry at first. So they gave Bubbles some food, but he didn't stop harking. Suddenly, they realized I hadn't come back home with Bubbles as usual and that I must have been in trouble. At that moment, Bubbles ran out and my parents followed him closely. Bubbles remembered the way and led my parents to the spot.

W: I can’t believe we won that game. My heart was beating so fast. I thought I might be sick. The last ten minutes were so scary.
M: It was close, but I knew we were going to win. All of us were doing well in that game.
Text3:
W: Wait, you’re not allowed to continue driving until the traffic light is green.
M: Oh, sorry. In my country you can set off when it’s orange. Only when it’s red do you have to stop completely.
Text4:

M: Don’t get me started. Besides figure skating and speed skating, snowboarding is another sport that attracts me.
Text6:
W: Hi, Mike. Do you have any plans for the weekend I have an extra ticket for the Dawson Trio’s live performance at Capital Stadium. Would you like to join me
M: I don’t know if I can. My parents are coming to town this weekend, so I need to spend time with them.

Text9:
W: Karl, you live in a lonely village, don’t you
M: Ah, not as much as it used to be. My village is on the east coast of Greenland. Boats from Denmark bring us supplies. And air transport is now the most important method to and from Greenland, and within the island too, as we hardly have any roads.
W: Mmm. Maybe you’ve got the Internet to help you keep in touch
M: We certainly have. Greenland has moved into the digital age and many people in my village go to an office. They sit at a desk using a computer to do business worldwide. In the old days, people’s work meant fishing in a boat. The modern lifestyle is easier but a lot less exciting.
W: Mmm, you sound a little regretful.
M: In some ways, maybe I am. Our grandparents had amazing skills. They used every piece of skin, fat and bone to make all the things they needed, like clothes, fuel and tools by hand. My grandpa used to hunt with a gun. He often told me the tales of danger and excitement. They attracted me more than the Internet games.
Text10:

Her coachman took her to the theater in a coach. It was very cold.
