Pop stars have traditionally not come from the upper classes of society. Eminem grew up at a trailer park (拖车式活动房屋停车场). 50 Cent is from the dangerous shelters of New York. The Beatles grew up in the poor city of Liverpool.
However, some musicians have come from the army. Elvis Presley, the King of Rock and Roll, served with the United States Army in Germany. Following that tradition comes a British hit, James Blunt. His single, You're Beautiful, was a huge success, and his concerts have sold out all over the country.
James Blunt, born on February 22, 1974, comes from a family with a long tradition of military service. His early life was not filled with music. His army officer father thought all music, even classical music, was unnecessary noise. His life seemed certain to follow that of his father's before him—private schools, a good university and a career as an officer in the British Army. The thought of pursuing a career in music had never occurred to him until he heard an older boy playing an electric guitar at age 14. When he was sent to Kosovo in 1999, he didn't just take his gun, and he also took his guitar, attached to the side of his tank. As he drove through villages damaged by the war, he used to sing the John Lennon's song Give Peace a Chance. “Well,” he later said, “we were peacekeepers.”
In 2003 he left the army and went to Los Angeles to make a record. In 2004, his first album Back to Bedlam was released, and the singles High, Wisemen and You're Beautiful have been great successes. For the singing soldier, putting down a gun for a guitar has been a good choice.

Every year on June 21st, World Music Day is celebrated in over 100 countries, including its birthplace of France, to honor both amateur and professional musicians. Citizens of a city or country are permitted and encouraged to perform music outside in their neighborhoods, public areas, and parks on World Music Day. Free concerts are also held, where musicians perform for the joy of it rather than for a fee.
In the 1970s, the American musician Joel Cohen, who was then working for a French radio station, came up with the idea of having musicians perform on the evening of June 21st to celebrate the start of summer. It was finally accepted by France's Ministry of Culture in 1982. The day started in France and has since extended to countries such as Belgium, the United Kingdom and others. It's the ideal time to learn a new instrument or listen to songs that wouldn't be ordinarily included on the playlist. Every type of musician can celebrate World Music Day with friends, family, and even strangers, whether they are young, elderly, new, or seasoned professionals. The purpose is to promote music.
It makes no difference how good you are at making music; everyone can do it. This day can be used by even the most tone deaf folks to sing their hearts out and appreciate the beauty and power of music. Music is not only a great way to express yourself, but it may also be beneficial to your health. A song might bring back a joyful memory or make you feel energized when you listen to it.

11.What's the author's attitude towards music
A.Challenging. B.Critical.

The arts, especially music, should be part of every school's lessons at every grade level. Students would be much smarter if they had some musical experience. They could improve their classroom skills, like paying attention and following direction. People develop all these skills when they learn music. Making music also lets children use their imagination. It provides students with a chance to try out their own ideas.
Music not only makes children better students, but also gives them something positive to do. In a music program, children can be part of a band. Parents can enjoy listening to their children's music instead of seeing them glued to a computer or TV screen. In a school band, students get to be part of a team. They can get along well with old friends and make new friends through music.
Music builds self confidence, too. It gives children a sense of achievement and success. Making music is something for them to be proud of, and it lets kids practice performing in front of audiences. Music gives children an opportunity for self expression, and that helps develop their self confidence.
Once again, music is important because it can make children better students, give them something positive to do, and build their characters. That is why music should be offered in every single grade in every school.
12.How could music make students smarter
A.By improving their memory and attention.
B.By improving their classroom skills and imagination.
C.By making them brave, knowledgeable and modest.
D.By learning music, making music and trying out their own ideas.
13.What does the underlined part “glued to” in the second paragraph mean
A.Unwilling to turn on.
B.Willing to give up.

15.What's the best title of the text
A.Music Is a Must as a Course at School

Should you listen to music when you work Some will say they love it, saying that it improves their performance; others will say they cannot work effectively with music playing in the background. 16 It just depends on what type of work you're doing.
In a recent study, we brought participants into our lab with a variety of tasks. They included an easy task — searching through word lists and crossing out(删掉) words containing the letter “a” and a more difficult task — memorizing word pairs and recalling the partner of each word. Some participants completed all of the tasks in silence, whereas others completed the tasks with instrumental music that was either loud or soft, and either simple or complex, the latter meaning music with more instrumental tracks. 17
We found that participants who listened to simple music or no music performed about the same on the easy task. 18 Contrarily, participants performed worse on the more difficult task when they listened to any music, regardless of complexity or volume(音量), compared to those who didn't listen to any music.
19 Not surprisingly, we typically need to use fewer of our mental resources when we perform easy tasks, whereas demanding tasks require more brainpower. However, because we might be less engaged(忙的) during easier tasks, there's a greater risk of drifting off to sleep. Music might give us the extra boost we need to get refreshed. 20 Listening to music can become overkill So we have to strike a balance between the type of music and the type of a task.
A.How should we understand these findings
B.We concluded several key findings from our study.
C.However, difficult tasks already demand a lot of our mental resources.
D.Our research has found that the effects of work may depend on our personalities.
E.We want to develop a more comprehensive framework that could be applied more broadly.
F.However, participants who listened to complex music performed best on the easy task.
G.Interestingly enough, our research has found that both of these views can be true.

“What will we be singing for the contest this year ” a student from my high school choir,a singing team, asked eagerly.
I hesitated this moment. “I was thinking,” I said. “Maybe we'll skip the contest and just work hard on the concerts this year. ”
“NO!” the kids protested.
“We've got to enter the contest!”
“In Class A.”
“It's tradition!”
This was true.Awards lined the front wall of the music room from the past successes of large, talented classes. But a change in educational policies, with an emphasis on academic knowledge, had reduced my choir to a mere thirty two students. My section leaders had graduated or been forced to drop music classes, leaving me with young, inexperienced kids who couldn't read music, couldn't hold their parts, and could sing only a simple melody or song.
“Maybe we could enter Class B this year,” I suggested, knowing that even that would be a near impossible mission.
“No!” the kids screamed. “Class A!”
I shook my head. “Class A is extremely difficult.”
“We can do it!” they shouted. “We can do it!”
“I'll have to think about it,” I said, hoping their enthusiasm would die off in a couple of weeks.
But that didn't happen. If anything, the class became more fixed. Every day they begged and begged and they insisted. Because I had to protect their self pride, I couldn't tell them they weren't good enough. My efforts to prevent their eagerness, by showing them a difficult piece of music from the contest list, simply ended with, “It's okay, Mrs. Pliszka. We'll get it.”
Paragraph 1:
I struggled to make a decision.

Paragraph 2:
When the contest day finally arrived, the kids felt ready to take on the world!

故选A。
play an important part in...“在……中起重要作用”。important以元音音素开头,故填an。
37.our 考查形容词性物主代词。由设空处后面的名词短语daily lives可知此处应用形容词性物主代词our,作定语。
38.of 考查介词。be of+名词=be+相应的形容词。故填of。
40.to make 考查不定式。 故填to make。
45.that/which 考查定语从句的引导词。设空处无提示词,前面是复数名词difficulties, 45 we meet in our life 中缺少宾语,故推测设空处引导的是定语从句,修饰指物的difficulties,故用that或which。
One possible version:
Dear Sharon,
I'm glad to know you are keen on Chinese songs and want to learn them. Here I would like to recommend my friend Wang Ming to you.
Wang Ming, aged 17 this year, is a student in our school. He is honest, kind and easy to get along with. For one thing, he has a gift for singing and has taken part in many singing contests in which he performed well. For another, his spoken English is so excellent that he has no difficulty communicating with you.
I hope my recommendation is of some help to you.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
I struggled to make a decision. If I destroyed their hope, would I destroy their spirit On the other hand, if we decided to enter Class A, would they be humiliated by the judges' comments Finally one morning, I walked into the classroom. “Kids!” I demanded. “We are entering the contest in Class A...” The rest of my sentence was lost in screams of delight and applause. As the weeks progressed, each morning the kids practiced singing, worked on reading music, learned musical terms, and practiced rhythms.
Paragraph 2:
When the contest day finally arrived, the kids felt ready to take on the world! As my choir went on stage,I mouthed, “Smile!” They looked confident. I took a deep breath, and we began. They performed masterfully. Two very long hours later, the results were posted. I stood frozen, staring at the list in disbelief: a first place award with the highest marks of all.All kids were screaming and embracing. Warm tears wet my cheeks.I was surrounded by kids who had a dream—kids who refused to give up—kids who taught me to never doubt the possibility of success for any students or any classes ever again.
