Food Festivals Around the World
Stilton Cheese Rolling
May Day is a traditional day for celebrations, but the 2,000 English villagers of Stilton must be the only people in the world who include cheese rolling in their annual plans. Teams of four, dressed in a variety of strange and funny clothes, roll a complete cheese along a 50-metre course. On the way, they must not kick or throw their cheese, or go into their competitors' petition is fierce and the chief prize is a complete Stilton cheese weighing about four kilos (disappointingly, but understandably the cheeses used in the race are wooden ones). All the competitors are served with beer or port wine, the traditional accompaniment to Stilton cheese.
The National Fiery Foods & BBQ Show
Every year more than 10,000 people head for the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. They come from different countries, but they all share a common addiction—food that is not just spicy, but hot enough to make your mouth burn, your head spin and your eyes water. Their destination is the National Fiery Foods & BBQ Show which is held over a period of three days every March. You might like to try a chocolate-covered Habanero—one of the hottest peppers in the world—or any one of the thousands of products that are on show. But one thing is for sure—if you don't like the feeling of a burning tongue, this festival isn't for you!
La Tomatina—The World's Biggest Food Fight
On the last Wednesday of every August, the Spanish town of Bu ol hosts La Tomatina—the world's largest food fight. A week-long celebration leads up to an exciting tomato battle as the highlight of the week's events. The early morning sees the arrival of large trucks with tomatoes—official fight-starters get things going by casting tomatoes at the crowd.
The battle lasts little more than half an hour in which time around 50,000 kilograms of tomatoes have been thrown at anyone or anything that moves, runs, or fights back. Then everyone heads down to the river to make friends again—and for a much-needed wash!

It's funny—as a writer, it's easy to share your knowledge, or your personal stories with an unknown listener of many. You think your friends and family may not read your articles. But as I began to talk more openly about Chinese traditions and food, I learned that they were interested, curious and really hungered for them. Their interest and curiosity grew and the culmination of their interest and curiosity was this past Spring Festival. They would like to spend Spring Festival Eve with me. I accepted their request. It was an inconvenient Monday. I'd never had Spring Festival Eve when anyone but my father cooked.
I took the day off for the dinner preparation. I drove 45 minutes out of town to a Cantonese BBQ shop where I bought a whole roast duck and watched, fascinated, as it was changed into bite-size pieces. I shopped at a faraway international market like a madwoman, looking for Chinese vegetables and other food that would be new to my guests. I called my dad, asking for some pointers on how to make dishes I'd never made. I texted him pictures of the sea fish I picked out, and the red clothing they threw on for luck.
In just a few hours, I cooked a dinner of 15 dishes for six friends who cared enough about me and my culture and came over on a cold winter Monday night to celebrate my tradition with me. We drank, ate and toasted the beautiful night. Laughter of joy filled my room. And that night, I felt what it was to be loved for our culture as well as our food.

Chinese New Year has been welcomed in Britain with its biggest ever program of events and celebrations.
From London's Trafalgar Square to major cities across Britain, tens of thousands of British people have joined Chinese communities in celebrating the arrival of the New Year. In Manchester there was a dragon parade, led by a very impressive 54-meter-long dragon and ending in Chinatown where there was traditional Chinese entertainment, more than 6,000 lanterns, street food villages and a fireworks display. Celebrations also took place in Liverpool, Birmingham, Durham, Edinburgh, Leeds and Newcastle.
Academic Dr Wu Kegang says that the Chinese New Year event in Britain is now bigger than ever and it is growing every year. When Wu arrived in Britain 26 years ago from Guangdong, the first thing he noticed was that Chinese New Year was celebrated mainly in towns and cities with big Chinese communities. “You had to go to London's Chinatown to join your countrymen in celebrating, or to Chinatowns in places like Liverpool and Manchester for events almost only held for Chinese people,” Wu recalled.
Now it is so different, and we are seeing communities all over the country taking part alongside their Chinese populations,” he said. “It is clear to me that the celebrations will continue to grow in Britain. Chinese New Year has earned its place in the calendar of events in Britain, and is here to stay.”

It may seem as if Mother's Day had been created by a company named Hallmark, but people have been taking time on the calendar to give a shout-out to moms for a long time. The Greeks and Romans had mother goddess festivals—although their celebrations didn't involve the menfolk taking their underappreciated mothers out to dinner. A more recent tradition was Mothering Sunday, which developed in the British Isles during the 16th century. On the fourth Sunday in April, young men and women who were living and working apart from their families were advised to return to their mothers' houses.
Mother's Day that is observed in the United States started in the 1850s with Ann Jarvis, a West Virginian woman who established “Mothers' Work Days” to promote health and hygiene(卫生) at home and in the workplace. During the Civil War, Jarvis organized women to improve sanitary conditions for soldiers on both sides, and after the war she became a peacemaker, furthering the cause by bringing together the mothers of the soldiers of the Union and the Confederacy and promoting a Mother's Day holiday.
Jarvis's work inspired another 19th-century woman, Julia Ward Howe. In 1870 Howe published her “Mother's Day Proclamation(宣言)”, which imagined the day not as a time for appreciation of mothers by their children but as an opportunity for women to exercise their collective power over peace. Howe started holding the annual Mother's Day celebration in Boston, her hometown, but after about a decade she stopped footing the bill and the tradition faded away.
It was Jarvis's daughter Anna who succeeded in getting Mother's Day recognized as a national holiday. After her mother died, in May 1906, Anna started holding yearly ceremonies on the anniversary and conducting a tireless PR campaign to make the day a holiday. In 1908 she succeeded in getting the support of John Wanamaker, the Philadelphia department store magnate(巨头) and advertising pioneer, and by 1912 West Virginia and a few other states had adopted Mother's Day. Two years later, President Woodrow Wilson signed a resolution(决议) declaring the second Sunday in May a national holiday.
It wasn't long, though, before whatever ideals the day was supposed to celebrate were buried under a large number of greeting cards and candies. By the 1920s Anna Jarvis was campaigning against the holiday she had been instrumental in creating. “I wanted it to be a day of emotionalism, not profit,” she said.
12.What can we know from the first paragraph

D.The Greeks and Romans were the first to celebrate Mother's Day.

A.Because it was an emotional day.
B.Because the festival was not profitable.
C.Because the celebrations went against the original spirit.
D.Because the day was buried under greeting cards and candies.
15.Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A.The Objection to Mother's Day

Pumpkin(南瓜) carving at Halloween is a family tradition. We visit a local farm every October. In the pumpkin field, I compete with my three brothers and sister to seek out the biggest pumpkin. My dad has a rule that we have to carry our pumpkins back home, and as the eldest child I have an advantage—I carried an 85-pounder back last year.
This year, it was hard to tell whether my prize or the one chosen by my 14-year-old brother, Jason, was the winner. Unfortunately we forgot to weigh them before taking out their insides, but I was determined to prove my point. All of us were hard at work at the kitchen table, with my mom filming the annual event. I'm unsure now why I thought forcing my head inside the pumpkin would settle the matter, but it seemed to make perfect sense at the time.
With the pumpkin resting on the table, hole uppermost, I bent over and pressed my head against the opening. At first I got jammed just above my eyes and then, as I went on with my task, unwilling to quit, my nose briefly prevented entry. Finally I managed to put my whole head into it, like a cork(软木塞)forced into a bottle. I was able to straighten up with the huge pumpkin resting on my shoulders.
My excitement was short-lived. The pumpkin was heavy. “I'm going to set it down, now,” I said, and with Jason helping to support its weight, I bent back over the table to give it somewhere to rest. It was only when I tried to remove my head that I realized getting out was going to be less straightforward than getting in. When I pulled hard, my nose got in the way. I got into a panic as I pressed firmly against the table and moved my head around trying to find the right angle, but it was no use. “I can't get it out!” I shouted, my voice sounding unnaturally loud in the enclosed space.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。

  ◎语篇解读 本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了美国人庆祝感恩节的方式。
16.E 空后的“Watching the Thanksgiving Day Parade...to celebrate Thanksgiving.”(观看感恩节大游行,踢足球,做志愿者以及玩游戏也是感恩节的庆祝方式。)讲了感恩节的庆祝方式,且本句中的“also”暗示上文也应讲庆祝方式,E项“通过吃有火鸡的大餐来庆祝它。”符合语境。故选E。
17.C 上文提到提前一个月邀请家人和朋友来过感恩节,再根据空后一句“That's because they already have plans for Thanksgiving.”可推知,此处表示有些人可能会拒绝你的邀请。故选C。

第三部分 写作
第一节
One possible version:
Ladies and gentlemen,
Good morning! I feel honored to share my topic “The Importance of Good Sleep” with you. World Sleep Day is annually celebrated on March 21, aiming to raise public awareness of good sleep. The lack of good sleep will not only weaken the immune system, but also cause a bad mood and inefficiency. So you'd better form a regular sleep habit and try to make your bedroom pleasant and quiet to sleep in. Besides, it is important that you should avoid tea, coffee or alcohol before bedtime.
That's all. Many thanks for listening!
第二节
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
I was stuck for five or six minutes though it felt much longer. Luckily, the muffled voices from outside were oddly calming, though—Jason giving advice, Austin, singing a song I couldn't make out, and Dad even proposing calling the fire department for help. Finally, they got me to push my head farther into the pumpkin so that they could reach in and undo the rubber band round my ponytail. I emerged with squash-conditioned hair, a sore chin and my nose plugged with pulp. It was only then that I realized my unruffled and amused mom had been filming the whole time!
Paragraph 2:
The video was posted the day before Halloween. To my astonishment, by the end of that day it received over 1,000 views. People asked Mom to put it on YouTube, and we even got calls from TV breakfast shows. Meanwhile, the video started racking up hundreds of thousands of views. When I went out, I was recognized by people I'd never met. The pumpkin also became a minor celebrity. Passers-by and trick-or-treaters would knock and ask for selfies with it. What an unforgettable Halloween!
