In 1969, watching the landing of Apollo 11 on the Moon on TV from his parents' farm in Canada, Chris Hadfield was amazed and excited. On that day, at only nine years old, Chris made the most important decision in his life: He was going to be an astronaut.
There wasn't even a training program in Canada to become an astronaut, but Chris was determined. He spent a great deal of time studying and fixing engines. After school he joined the Canadian army where he learned to fly many different types of planes. Chris did a lot of research for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the United States and had special training. Finally, in 1995 he rode his first rocket into space.
Chris became the first Canadian astronaut to walk in space, and went on a number of space missions throughout his career. The most memorable was his five-month stay on the International Space Station (ISS) as commander, between December 2012 and May 2013.He posted on social media thousands of photos of Earth and videos of himself explaining how things work in zero gravity. His followers could watch him sleeping, brushing his teeth, washing his hands, or preparing “space” snacks in zero gravity, which turned him into a social media phenomenon.
Today, Chris travels around the world giving talks about his work. He once said, “Decide in your heart of hearts what really excites and challenges you, and start moving your life in that direction. Every decision you make, from what you eat to what you do with your time tonight, turns you into who you are tomorrow. Look at who you want to be, and start shaping yourself into that person. You may not get exactly where you thought you'd be, but you will be doing things that suit you in a profession you believe in. Don't let life randomly shape you into the adult you don't want to become.”
4.What led Chris to make up his mind to be an astronaut
A.The life on his parents' farm.
B.His ability to fly various planes.
C.Apollo 11's landing on the Moon.
D.His passion for studying engines.
5.What made Chris popular in the media
A.The space tasks he conducted in his life.
B.The pictures and videos he posted online.
C.His inspiring talks about his work around the world.
D.His great contributions to Canada's space industry.
6.What can we learn from Chris' words in the last paragraph
A.Courage is what it takes to overcome difficulties.
B.Opportunities go hand in hand with challenges.
C.Big endings come from small beginnings.
D.The key to success lies in the firm aim.
7.Which of the following best describes Chris
A.Strong-willed and hardworking.
B.Honest and outgoing.
C.Optimistic and responsible.
D.Smart and knowledgeable.

Despite all the other fun activities around us today, there's no doubt that many people still love reading. Books can teach us plenty about the world, of course, as well as improving our vocabulary and writing skills. But can novels also make us better people
According to Canadian psychologist Keith Oatley, people who read novels may improve their social skills. In his research, Oatley has found that each time we open a novel, we read about the characters and imagine ourselves in their position. When they are in danger, our hearts start to race. Characters hook us into stories. Without necessarily even noticing, we imagine what it's like to be them and compare their reactions with how we respond.
So people who read novels appear to be more skilled at working out what other people are thinking and feeling, which is an important social skill. But does that necessarily make them better people To test this, Oatley's team carried out an experiment, where researchers “accidentally” drop a number of pens on the floor and then see who offers to help pick them up. Before the pen-drop took place, participants were given a list of questions measuring empathy(共鸣). Then they read a short story and answered a series of questions to see if they had better performance on empathy. It worked: the people who expressed the most empathy for the characters were more likely to help pick up the pens.
So the research shows that reading novels does make people behave better. It sounds as though it's time to change people's fixed image of the shy bookworm whose nose is always in a book because they find it difficult to get on with real people. In fact, these bookworms might be better than everyone else at understanding human beings.
8.How do people improve social skills by reading novels according to Oatley
A.By choosing the right novels.
B.By observing the characters.
C.By learning from the characters.
D.By experiencing the feelings of the characters.
9.Why do researchers drop pens in the experiment
A.To improve participants' social skills.
B.To help participants see their strengths.
C.To encourage participants to read more.
D.To check participants' willingness to help.
10.What is the purpose of the text
A.To improve the skill in reading.
B.To increase the interest in reading.
C.To stress the importance of social skills.
D.To introduce a way to do scientific research.
11.What is the best title for the text
A.Make yourself a better reader
B.Make novel-reading interesting
C.Reading novels makes us better people
D.Reading makes bookworms more popular
D
Virtue, by definition, is the moral excellence of a person. Morally excellent people have a character made up of virtues valued as good. They are honest, respectful, courageous, forgiving and kind, for example. They do the right thing, and don't bend to impulses, urges or desires, but act according to values and principles. Some might say good qualities are inborn. Actually, virtues need to be cultivated. With the habit of being virtuous, we can take control of our lives and move them in the direction of greater happiness and fulfillment.
Virtues are universal and recognized by all cultures as basic qualities of well-being. However, practicing virtues is not easy. So often we know that it takes perseverance to reach our goals, but we still never get there. We know that if we forgive, we'll be less angry. We know it takes courage to accomplish great things. So why then, if we know what to do, are we still stuck
Because we have not yet consciously applied a virtue to a given situation so as to change its outcome such as in these examples: kindness towards someone who is having a bad day can make him or her smile and build rapport;trust in a relationship creates valuable, meaningful relationships; gratitude in a job loss can shift our focus from feeling low to how we can have a more fulfilling, new career; service to others can change lives, better neighborhoods and create stronger nations.
We know we are becoming more virtuous people, not only because of the above results but also because of the way other people respond to us. Our friends, family, co-workers, and neighbors will trust and rely on us. They will come to us for guidance and help. They will want to be around us because we inspire them to be better people. Practicing virtues allows us to develop our potential, and live a more purposeful and better life.
12.What can we know about virtuous people from the first paragraph
A.They are born with virtue.
B.They never make a mistake.
C.They have a habit of doing good.
D.They act on the principle of profit.
13.What is the second paragraph mainly about
A.It's a virtue to forgive others.
B.It's hard to practice virtues.
C.It takes courage to achieve goals.
D.Trust is necessary in a relationship.
14.What does the underlined word “rapport” mean in the third paragraph
A.A good greeting. B.A great exchange.
C.A good goodbye. D.A close relationship.
15.What is the author's purpose in the last paragraph
A.To encourage readers to be more virtuous.
B.To encourage readers to live a purposeful life.
C.To encourage readers to offer others guidance.
D.To encourage readers to develop others' potential.
Forgiveness
To forgive is a virtue, but no one has ever said it is easy. When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is possible, and it can be surprisingly beneficial to your physical and mental health.People who forgive show less sadness, anger and stress and more hopefulness, according to recent research.
 16 Try the following steps:
Calm yourself. 17 You can take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure:a beautiful scene in nature, or someone you love.
Don't wait for an apology. Many times the person who hurts you does not intend to apologize. He may have wanted to hurt you or just doesn't see things the same way. 18 Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean becoming friends again with the person who upsets you.
Take the control away from your offender(冒犯者).Rethinking about your hurt gives power to the person who causes your pain. Instead of focusing on your wounded feelings, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you.
19 If you understand your offender, you may realize that he or she is acting out of unawareness, fear, and even love. You may want to write a letter to yourself from your offender's point of view.
Don't forget to forgive yourself. 20 But it can rob you of your self-confidence if you don't do it.
A.Why should you forgive
B.How should you start to forgive
C.Recognize the benefits of forgiveness.
D.Try to see things from your offender's angle.
E.For some people, forgiving themselves is the biggest challenge.
F.To make your anger die away, try a simple stress-management technique.
G.If you wait for other people to apologize, you could be waiting an awfully long time.

Back in the day when I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with my life, I was studying to become a firefighter. I was a volunteer fire aide in New York, and was studying at Mission College. As a firefighter, you should always think of other people and try to help other people.
One night after class, I was walking home and decided to stop off at a fast food restaurant. I lived in an apartment alone near my college so most of the time I used to get a takeout. I got my food and started to head home when a homeless man walked to me. He looked 20 or so. He was very dirty and obviously very hungry. He asked me for some change to buy a little food. As I was pulling some change out, I had an idea.
I decided to see if he wanted to eat a real dinner, so I asked him to follow me back into the restaurant to order food together. For someone who had been on the fringes(边缘) of society it seemed like he was very surprised at my generosity. But to me, it was what any human being should do or at least offer. He was afraid to go into the restaurant because of shame. But I insisted. When he finally followed me and walked into the restaurant, the people behind the counter refused to let him in, but I told them that I was buying him dinner and he had a right to be there. After some arguments, they finally let him in and he sat down at the table. It seemed like he was relieved a bit to be sitting at the table. I asked him to order whatever he wanted. He only ordered a hamburger, so I had to encourage him to order whatever he wanted.

故填being。
inspire sb. to do sth. 故填to build。
41.to/into 考查介词。 be admitted to/into... 故填to或into。
do well in意为“在……方面做得好”。故填well。
故填An。
45.contribution(s) 考查名词。
One possible version:
Volunteering in School Anniversary Celebrations
Our school celebrated its 100th anniversary on December 20th. To keep everything in order, the student volunteer club took an active part and made great contributions to the anniversary celebrations.
Volunteers from Senior One took up the job of cleaning and decorating the hall while volunteers from Senior Two worked as receptionists in charge of greeting and guiding the guests and alumni. It was the sincere smile on their faces and good manners they showed that left a deep impression on everyone attending the anniversary celebrations.
What the volunteers did for the anniversary celebrations got the credit they deserved—all the teachers and students highly praised their selfless devotion.
第二节
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
Finally he ordered three hamburgers and we began to talk. I asked why he was on the street. He was silent, with his head down. After a while, he said that his parents died in an accident when he was twelve. He had been homeless since then. There was no job he could do to support himself. He had no place to live in and had to hang out most of the time. Hearing his words, I was heartbroken. I asked him if he minded sharing an apartment with me.
Paragraph 2:
He stood up and looked at me,open-mouthed. I smiled, repeating my words. Suddenly, he grasped my hands tightly, with tears rolling down his face. He couldn't say a word but I knew what he wanted to say. I told him he could find a job near my apartment and start a new life. A bright smile appeared on his face, “I couldn't thank you more. You light up my life!” he said heartily. I felt very happy. After enjoying our food, we headed for the door as well as our new life.
