In the United States, when one becomes rich, he is willing to let people know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is the story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbors.
The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $125 a week at the age of 23. That was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighborhood outside New York City. When he saw that rich people rode horses, Momand went horseback riding every day. When he saw that rich people had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbors.
It was like a race, but one could never finish his race because another was always trying to keep up. The race ended for Momand and his wife when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City.
Momand looked around him and noticed that many people did things just to keep up with the rich lifestyle of their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to create a comic strip(连环漫画). He called it “Keeping Up with the Joneses” because “Jones” is a very common name in the United States. “Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keeping up with the rich lifestyle of the people around you. Momand's comic strip was in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.
People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. And there are “Joneses” in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.
1.Why do some people want to “keep up with the Joneses”
A.Because they want to be as rich as their neighbors.
B.Because they want others to know or to think that they are rich.
C.Because they don't want others to know they are rich.
D.Because they want to be as happy as others.
2.What can be inferred from the story about rich people
A.They like to live outside New York City.
B.They like to live in New York City.
C.They like to live in apartments.
D.They have many neighbors.
3.Why did Arthur Momand use the name “Jones” in his comic strip

B.“Jones” is a popular name.
C.“Jones” is his neighbor's name.
D.“Jones” is not a good name.
4.What's the author's attitude to “keeping up with the Joneses”

C.Supportive. D.Objective.
Ⅱ.七选五
1 People use money to buy food, furniture, books, bicycles and hundreds of other things they need or want. When they work, they usually get paid in money.
Most of the money today is made of metal or paper. 2 One of the first sorts of money was the shell.
Shells were not the only things used as money. In China, cloth and knives were used. On the Philippine Islands, rice was used as money for a long time. Elephant tusks, monkey tails and salt were used as money in parts of Africa.
The first metal coins were made in China. They were round and had a square hole in the centre. 3
Different countries have used different metals and designs for their money. 4 Sweden and Russia used copper(铜) to make their money. Later some countries began to make coins of gold and silver.
But even gold and silver were inconvenient if you had to buy something expensive. Again the Chinese thought of a way to improve money. 5 The first paper money looked more like a note from one person to another than the paper money used today.
Money has had an interesting history from the days of shell money until today.
A.The first coins in England were made of tin(锡).
B.But people used to use all kinds of things as money.
C.No one knows for certain when people began to use money.
D.People strung(用线穿起来) them together and carried them from place to place.

根据第二段中的“moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighborhood outside New York City(和妻子搬到了纽约市郊外一个非常富裕的社区)”和第三段中的“...when they could no longer pay for their new way of life. They moved back to an apartment in New York City.(…… 故选A。
根据第四段中的“He called it ‘Keeping Up with the Joneses’ because ‘Jones’ is a very common name in the United States.”
根据最后一段中的“But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.(但一个人一定会对试图‘跟上琼斯’感到厌烦,因为无论一个人做什么,琼斯先生似乎总是领先。)” 故选A。B.积极的;C.支持的;D.
【高频词汇】 1.keep up with 跟上 2.expression n.

4.A 细节句。 故选A。

Recently she was praised for handing in £3,800 she had found in an envelope lying in a supermarket car park.
she had found in an envelope...为省略了that或which的定语从句,其中现在分词短语lying in a supermarket car park作后置定语,修饰envelope。
