阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
There's no better way to better understand a foreign culture than through one of its festivals. Here are some interesting festivals in the world.
La Tomatina(Spain)
Last Wednesday of August
This “largest food fight in the world” is believed to have been started with a tomato—but it certainly didn't end with just one. Now, more than 50,000 people pack the streets of Bu ol, Spain, armed with cheap tomatoes, ready to throw them at friends and strangers alike. Gloves and safety glasses are suggested as the battle can get quite heated, even though it lasts just an hour. While past years allowed anyone and everyone to take part, the large number of attendees pushed town officials to require tickets.
National Beer Day(Iceland)
March 1
It's no secret that Icelanders are fond of a bit of partying. After all, when there are days when the sun won't stop shining, it makes sense to throw a few back to celebrate. However, it wasn't that long ago (1989) that Iceland was still under a form of prohibition(禁酒令) and unable to sell beer. When the laws were passed to make beer legal on March 1,1989, Icelanders were excited and have since celebrated National Beer Day each March 1 with pub dances and other celebrations that last until the early hours of the morning. Beer has since become the most popular drink in the country.
  Lopburi Monkey Banquet(盛宴)(Thailand)
  Last Sunday in November
If you've ever come in close contact with monkeys, you know that they're often a bit troublesome, taking a sandwich from your hand without warning or breaking into your hotel minibar if you forget to lock the doors(true story). However, in 1989, in Lopburi, Thailand, a local innkeeper decided to feed the monkeys a banquet as they're also believed to bring good luck. Thus, a tradition was born and the banquet has grown each year. As the monkeys run into the banquet, they soon get a bit excited and start dancing on the tables and throwing food. For visitors, it's a highly enjoyable sight—just be sure to wear clothes that you don't mind being decorated by the monkeys.

One rainy afternoon, I was on a crosstown bus when a young woman jumped on. She had a child with her who must be about 3 or 4 years old.
The road was bumpy and the bus was full, and it soon got noisy as her kid began crying because he couldn't sit next to his mother. There were a couple of empty seats, but they weren't together. She was flustered and looked embarrassed.
Then another woman, a little older, stood up and moved so that the mother and the child could sit together. The mom smiled and said “thanks” to the woman. And then three words came out of the older woman's mouth that elevated the entire energy of that bus ride:“I've been there”.
Simple, undramatic and honest. At that moment, it seemed to unite people. Why Because almost all experiences are shared human experiences. We forget that, as we forge(稳步前进) through life, focusing on our own troubles and needs—which are actually less unique than we think. How can these three words create more connections in your life Ask yourself: “Where am I holding back ”
One thing I know for sure is this: Healing others helps heal yourself. I noticed this recently from my friend, Tracy, who took a new friend who had suffered a miscarriage under her wing. Tracy had three of them before having her daughter two years ago. Our intellect needs a doctor to explain the medical side of things, yes. But our souls need human connections to help us. No one can do that better than someone who has been exactly where you are.
Can the essence of these three words help you make a small difference right now It can be as simple as volunteering your seat, sharing some helpful advice or even lightening the mood with a joke when you notice that someone's uncomfortable—because we're all in this together.
4.The underlined word “flustered” in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to “ ”.
A.upset B.shocked C.scared D.relieved
5.What did the woman mean by saying “I've been there” in the third paragraph
A.The woman was on the bus and saw what had happened to the boy.
B.The woman once had the similar experience with that mother.
C.The woman got to her destination and was ready to get off the bus.
D.The woman took the seat that the boy was in just now.
6.Which of the following statements is reasonable according to the passage
A.Everyone has his or her own unique problem that is difficult to solve.
B.Doctors can help us get through hard times when we have mental or physical problems.
C.One can indeed make a difference to those in need of help by doing simple things.
D.The author's friend Tracy felt better after she was comforted by her new friend.
7.What is the passage intended to do
A.Illustrate some ways of helping others in detail.
B.Appeal to readers to give timely help to those in need.
C.Show a harmonious world by telling some touching stories.
D.Praise those who are willing to help others in emergencies.
C
There are no right or wrong signals, only cultural differences. Lack of cultural understanding will lead to disagreement among people from different cultures. Meeting with other cultures is actually very interesting and fun. It is certainly a great topic to discuss over a cup of coffee and cakes.
The gesture “thumbs-up” is commonly misunderstood. In English, it is known as “thumbs up”, though the action is commonly performed with only one hand. English-speaking Caucasians use it to signal “OK”, which has the same meaning as the OK gesture. The two can in fact be used almost interchangeably.
To most Europeans, it signals the number 1, since they count from 1 to 5 beginning with the thumb for 1 and ending with the little finger for 5. Americans usually start counting with the index finger for 1, and end with the thumb.
Avoid using this gesture in Southern Sardinia or Northern Greece unless you want to invite a fight. While Americans, the British and Australians would use the thumbs-up sign to signal hitchhiking, this message will not encourage a Northern Greek driver or motorist to stop to give them a ride.
What does the “OK” sign mean to you If you are an English-speaking Caucasian, it means “OK” or “good”. The French understand it as “zero” or “worthless”. The Japanese would read it as “money”.
Don't show this gesture to a Greek. Ancient Greek vases have been found showing this gesture as an insult. So, if you use this sign in Greece to tell a person that he is “OK”, he will feel insulted. Other regions where this sign can be insulting are Turkey, Malta, Tunisia, Russia, Paraguay, Brazil, etc.
8.What does the “thumbs-up” gesture show among English-speaking Caucasians
A.Agreement. B.Respect.
C.Calmness. D.Disappointment.
9.What number does the thumbs-up most probably stand for in America
A.1. B.2. C.4. D.5.
10.What should be avoided if you are in Brazil
A.Asking for a lift.
B.Giving the “OK” sign.
C.Trying to speak English.
D.Showing the “thumbs-up” gesture.
11.What does the text mainly talk about
A.The function of body language.
B.How to communicate with foreigners.
C.The different meanings of two gestures.
D.The importance of the language expression.
D
Those of us making grand travel plans might want to consider the final frontier as a destination. That's because Orbital Assembly Corporation, a new construction company run by former pilot John Blincow, is planning to open a luxury space hotel by 2027.Voyager Station, as it's being called, will accommodate 280 guests and 112 crew members, aiming to be the first commercial space hotel upon completion.
“We're trying to make the public realize that this golden age of space travel is just around the corner. It's coming. It's coming fast,” Blincow said in an interview. The golden age of space travel is coming indeed, as space tourism has drawn the attention of Richard Branson and Elon Musk. And it's the latter that Blincow and his team hope to partner in the near future. “We cannot call Musk's SpaceX our partner, but in the future we look forward to working with them,” Blincow said.
The physics involved in sleeping within a space hotel is similar to spinning water in a bucket(桶). Much in the same way one can spin(旋转) a bucket in a circle, keeping the water inside it, the space hotel will simulate gravity in a similar manner. This makes comfortable rooms and stylish bar experiences possible.
But for many visitors who venture so far, feeling the weightlessness of space is a big part of the appeal(吸引力). The team plans to serve traditional space food such as freeze-dried ice cream in the hotel's restaurant. There are plans for recreational activities such as basketball games where participants can jump higher due to the weightlessness of the environment.
Until now, the space hotel hasn't mentioned its room rate, but judging by other proposed public space missions, it will come at a high cost. For example, Virgin Galactic plans to take ordinary passengers into space at $250,000 per person, per trip. The team at Voyager Station, however, has already assured the public that they plan to eventually make a stay at the hotel something similar to a cruise.
12.What can we know about Voyager Station
A.It aims to train pilots.
B.It has been put into use.
C.It's the name of a spaceship.
D.It will be constructed.
13.Why are Richard Branson and Elon Musk mentioned in Paragraph 2
A.To show the popularity of them.
B.To stress the coming of space travel.
C.To list Blincow's partners at present.
D.To show examples of space agencies.
14.What does the third paragraph focus on
A.Stylish bars.
B.Water in a bucket.
C.The space travel experience.
D.The physics involved in the space hotel.
15.Which of the following may attract visitors greatly when they are living in the space hotel
A.Its remoteness.
B.Its room rate.
C.Feeling the weightlessness of space.
D.Playing basketball with famous players.

Good Neighbours
After school one winter day, Jack asked his mother to allow him to go out and play in the snow. “Sure, you can. Remember to put on your coat and your hat and your gloves,” his mother said. “You can build a snowman before your father comes home.”
“I'm going to need a carrot for the nose,” Jack said. “And I'll need some things for the snowman's hat and face.” Jack got a bucket(桶) and collected everything he needed to decorate his snowman. His mother promised she would watch him build the snowman from the window.
Outside, in his front yard, Jack started with a very small ball of snow. He got on his knees and rolled the snow into a big ball. At another window, someone else was watching Jack play. It was his new neighbour Naoko. Naoko asked her mother if she could go outside and join Jack in building his snowman. Naoko's mother agreed and promised to watch her from the window. “You can play until your father comes home,” her mother said.
Naoko ran outside to Jack's yard and asked if she could help him finish his snowman.
“Yes, please help me,” Jack said. “I have built my snowman's body with two snowballs. I need to roll one more for my snowman's head.”
“But snowmen only have two snowballs. One is for the body and the other one is for the head,” Naoko said.
“No, snowmen always have three snowballs,” Jack said. “I don't think I need you to help me after all.”
Jack picked up some snow and made it into a small snowball. He got on his knees and rolled the snow away from Naoko to make the snowman's head. Naoko walked back into her own yard and began to build her own snowman.
Jack made a hat for his snowman with his bucket. He used his mother's buttons for the eyes and mouth. Lastly, he added a carrot for the snowman's nose. Seeing his snowman, Jack was happy, but suddenly a terrible thing happened. The head fell off the snowman and crashed to the ground! “Oh, no! My snowman fell apart,” Jack said, “and my father is almost home!”
注意:续写词数应为150左右。

第三部分 写作
第一节
One possible version:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Knowing that the school English newspaper is looking for an editor responsible for the column “Traditional Chinese Culture”, I'm writing to apply for the position.
I think I'm qualified for it. To begin with, I have a good command of English, especially written English. Besides, I have taken the part-time job as an English editor, from which I have gained relevant experience. More importantly, I have a rich knowledge of traditional Chinese culture.
I would really appreciate it if I could be given the precious chance. I'm looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
Naoko heard Jack's cry and ran over to his yard to see what the problem was. “I'll help you roll another snowball,” Naoko said. “If we do it together, we can finish it before your father gets home.” Together, Jack and Naoko rolled a new snowball. They shaped it with their hands until it was round. Then they lifted it up onto the snowman's body and decorated it with the carrot and bucket and buttons. “We finished it just in time,” Jack said. “Thank you for your help.”
Paragraph 2:
“You're welcome. I like your snowman better,” Naoko said. “Mine doesn't have a nose.”Jack walked over to look at Naoko's snowman. He loved the pine cone eyes and mouth and the sticks for arms, but he knew it wasn't finished. Jack ran back to his snowman and pulled the carrot out. He broke it in half and gave one half to Naoko. “Hurry,” Jack said. “Your snowman needs a nose and your father is driving up the street too.” “Thank you,” Naoko said. “You're welcome,” Jack said. “I think our snowmen make good neighbours.”
