Batik is a traditional Indonesian coloring method used to make designs and drawings, usually on cloth and finished textiles. Batik makers use dyes(染料)—colors added to cloth and other materials—to create the colorful designs.
In central Indonesia, many batik makers are using natural dyes instead of manufactured ones. The natural dyes come from mangrove forests (红树林) that grow along the coast. The trees grow in salty water on a complex system of tall roots.
Mangrove forests serve an important purpose. They provide a barrier against destructive ocean waves called tsunamis. They are also important to water life like fish and crabs. And the forests are more effective in taking in carbon dioxide, a gas linked to climate change, than rainforests or similar environments.
Erwin Ardli is a mangrove ecologist at Indonesia's Jenderal Soedirman University. He says the natural dyes may not be as bright as manufactured ones, but they are better for the environment.
Ardli said, “We've seen the interest in natural dyes increasing, and especially for middle class and upper class people, they seem proud to wear clothes using these natural dyes rather than synthetic (合成的) ones.”
Iiting Budiarti, who owns an art gallery that shows batik designs, agreed with Ardli, adding that objects with natural dyes can cost two or three times more than the synthetic ones.
Forty-eight-year-old Sodikin is a batik maker. Over the past four years, he and his group of batik makers have changed from using chemical materials for dyes to mangrove-based products. The change has reduced their costs and helped the environment. Harvesting involves gathering a handful of what looks like string beans—seeds within a covering. Sodikin then takes the mangrove fruit home to make natural dyes from them.
“We use natural materials so as to preserve the mangrove forest at the same time,” Sodikin said. “We do not cut down the trees,” he added, “and we only take fruits or leaves that have fallen.”

Next to a tall building, the Muziekplein forest is one of seven such special and very small forests in the Dutch city of Utrecht, and 144 tiny forests across the Netherlands. It's about the size of a basketball court. Before it was planted, the area was a parking lot.
By the end of this year, according to IVN Nature Education, an organization leading the country's plan, there will be 200 such small forests in the Netherlands. In many other countries, communities are creating such small-area and native forests in response to big environmental challenges. The forests can be in any shape, but must be at least four meters wide based on IVN's instructions. A tiny forest can be built under a year. And it generally includes between 20 and 40 different tree species.
Since the first forest was planted in the Netherlands in 2015, the idea has become popular. Daan Bleichrodt launched IVN's Tiny Forest plan with the goal of making it easier for children to know the significance of protecting the environment. He thinks it is popular because people are becoming more and more aware of major environmental challenges. It's a very practical way for people to do something positive considering climate change and loss of biodiversity.
Data released by Wageningen University researchers in April shows that the forests hold a range of animal and plant species. Across the 11 tiny forests in a study, volunteers observed 636 animal species. They also recognized 298 plant species in addition to the original species planted in the areas. Daily maintenance of the forests sometimes involves obliterating unwanted weeds, but in general, new plant species, such as wildflowers, are allowed to grow, according to Bleichrodt.
Suzanne Valkman, head of the World Wildlife Fund(WWF) Netherlands forests unit, said, “I was just amazed to see so many species were recognized.” A WWF report in 2020 found that wildlife populations in the Netherlands had decreased by half over the last three decades. Butterflies, birds and reptile species were particularly hard hit. Valkman said, “The Tiny Forest data shows that the small project can improve biodiversity in cities.”
5.What is the feature of the Muziekplein forest
A.It has a small size.
B.It includes only rare species.
C.It has an interesting shape.
D.It is beside a parking lot.
6.What's the purpose of creating tiny forests in the Dutch city
A.To make a great profit.
B.To raise the awareness of kids' education.
C.To set an example to other countries.
D.To help improve the local environment.
7.What does the underlined word “obliterating” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Checking. B.Protecting.
C.Removing. D.Discovering.
8.Why did the author mention Suzanne Valkman's words
A.To describe the situation of wildlife species.
B.To show the effects of the Tiny Forest plan.
C.To explain the importance of biodiversity.
D.To encourage all of us to plant more trees.

If you're looking for something fun to do, pack a picnic dinner and take your family or friends to a beautiful place to eat. However, there's a wrong trend—view picnics as an excuse to transport food in single-use plastic containers. Sure, it means the clean-up is easy at the moment, but it just puts it off to a later point, when it takes the form of the volunteer clean-up and landfill management. 1 What follows is advice on how to pack such a picnic.
●Use food containers wisely
Using reusable containers is the easiest way to reduce waste. 2 For example, to reduce packaging, you can take along things like a loaf of bread, a whole watermelon, whole vegetables, a knife and a board to cut your food when you're ready to eat. These things don't have to be done and sealed before you leave the house.
●Choose real cutlery(餐具)
Using washable dishes and cutlery for a picnic does not require much more work than single-use ones.
You'd have to carry the waste out anyway in a trash bag, so why not pack your dirty plates and cutlery into a bag and put them in the dishwasher at home 3
●Think about the drinks
Forget the single-use, single-serve drink bottles. 4 Fill a large thermos (保温瓶) or personal water bottles with water, juice or lemonade at pared with a single-use plastic cup, they have the added advantage of keeping your drinks cold for longer.
●Put cloth bags to good use
Cloth bags are amazing. I use them for so much more than just buying food at the store. They're perfect for packing sandwiches, dried or fresh fruit, and other snack foods. You can use them to pack glasses or plates to prevent breaking. They can also work as a napkin, tea towel, or garbage bag if needed. 5
A.Be sure to add a few to your picnic basket.
B.There are some healthy dishes you can make or buy.
C.To avoid this, a plastic-free picnic can be a brilliant idea.
D.If you're worried about breaking, take some light camping plates.
E.Instead, just bring along a tablecloth to spread on the ground.
F.These create a huge amount of waste, which can be easily avoided.
G.In addition, keep in mind that you don't have to pre-pack everything.

第三段第一句“Mangrove forests serve an important purpose.”
根据第四段中的“the natural dyes may not be as bright as manufactured ones, but they are better for the environment”可知,自然染料没有人造染料亮,但却更环保。
