Bear Grylls's Adventure Tales
Mr. Grylls has established himself as television's foremost survivalist. In episodes of Man vs. Wild, he has been dropped into some punishing environments (the sand of the Sahara, the frigid Siberian wilderness) with little more than a knife, a water bottle, and the instructions to make it out alive. Below are excerpts(摘录) from an interview with him.
Q: When did you first grow interested in the outdoors
A: My late dad had been a climber. He started taking me out into the wild at a young age, doing everything from climbing sea cliffs hundreds of feet up to making boats and building treehouses. He taught me to take risks but to always listen to my inner voice and to work out clever solutions even when the situation has left you dramatically low on tools.
Q: Last time when you were in southern Africa, your parachute(降落伞)failed to open, resulting in an injury that nearly left you paralyzed. What effect did that have on you
A: Those long months during recovery were a bitter time for me. I couldn't move and was in constant pain. It was while I was lying there that I determined to re-find my childhood dream of climbing Mount Qomolangma. I counted myself blessed to be able to leave that hospital fully recovered, and determined to live life boldly and without regrets.
Q: What was your most dangerous trip
A: Probably a small expedition I led across the Arctic Ocean in an open inflatable boat. We hit very unusual subzero storms off the ice packs of Greenland and gale-force winds. In a tiny open boat, you are truly at the mercy of the weather, and your survival is then taken out of your hands and put into those of Mother Nature. All five of us had to face the prospect of death during those nights.
1.What qualities did Bear Grylls develop under the influence of his father
A.Being daring and efficient.
B.Being resourceful and patient.
C.Being courageous and persevering.
D.Being adventurous and true to himself.
2.Which of the following can take the place of the underlined phrase “at the mercy of” in the last paragraph
A.Under the guidance of. B.Under the control of.
C.Under the protection of. D.Under the disguise of.
3.In which section of a newspaper can we most likely find this article
A.Men Fashion. B.Pop Culture.
C.Travel Weekly. D.The University.

How adversity makes you stronger
When faced with a crisis, we find it difficult to imagine the experience will eventually lead to some type of growth. 1 Research shows that past adversities can help you become more powerful in three ways.
2 Post-unpleasant growth is the experience of positive change after going through a significantly stressful event. Researchers have discovered two common themes that people tend to report after experiencing a stressful event: spiritual growth and enhanced personal strength.
They build self-efficacy. Self-efficacy is the confidence in your ability to overcome challenges and succeed. I once took part in a program with navies, where I should dance in front of hundreds of audiences. When I danced, I had a panic attack and had to hang on to my colleague's arm to make it through. What was odd was my brain's reaction to the exercise. While it was a truly unpleasant experience, I survived. 3
They help you treat stress as a challenge. 4 Some people view stress as a threat, while others are able to view it as a challenge. With a challenge response, you get additional vigour and feel focused instead of being fearful.
5 Your past struggles, even small ones during an adversity can help you step out of the trouble you're faced with.
A.They help you find the good.
B.They can bring growth after sufferings.
C.People have a healthier physical response to stress.
D.If your world feels out of control right now, just stay relaxed.
E.The fact is that we can become stronger after a difficult situation.
F.How you think about stress matters extremely in terms of how you process it.
G.That made my brain think about what other tough challenges I could conquer.

Once there was a businessman who was engaged in leather business, but his business failed because of his poor management, which made him lack confidence to continue to do his business. Even worse, he owed a lot of money to others and could see no way out.
Today, it was just New Year's Day, and he should have dinner with his family, but he was walking alone in the park because of business failure in order that he could relieve his sense of failure. He sat on the park bench, wondering if anything could save his company. Suddenly one of his old friends appeared in front of him.
“Oh, dear, long time no see!You look so bad. You must be encountering some troubles,” his old friend asked in a worried tone.
“Well, I just encountered a big failure in my business and owed a lot of money to others. I don't know how to continue to do my business,” the businessman replied in a low voice.
After listening to his problem, to the businessman's surprise, his old friend took out a check, passed it to him and said, “Take this money. Meet me here exactly one year from today, and you can pay me back at that time.” Then he turned and disappeared.
The businessman with a very surprised expression on his face saw the check in his hand for $5,000,000! The money was more than enough to save his business. However, he didn't plan to use it. He decided to put the check in his safe.
With the check, he was full of confidence and planned to continue to do his business again. He worked hard day by day and slowly his business began to revive. The businessman was making money once again.

Ⅰ.1.genuine 2.decent 3.motive

此处为“It is important for sb. not to do sth.” 故填It(首字母应大写)。
主语为The dog,故填has been barking。

Ⅰ.1.whatever/what 考查连接代词。
故填being。
4.burned/burnt 考查动词的时态。
No vegetables or fruit与find之间为被动关系,设空处前为情态动词could。故填be found。
故填on。
try one's best to do sth.
句型结构“It was+一段时间+before...” 故填before。
根据文章第二段中的“He taught me to take risks but to always listen to my inner voice and to work out clever solutions”可知,贝尔·格里尔斯在他父亲的影响下发展出了敢于冒险、忠于自己的品质。故选D。A.
根据文章最后一段中画线部分后面的“and your survival is then taken out of your hands and put into those of Mother Nature(然后你的生存从你的手中被夺走,交到了大自然的手中)”可知,在一艘露天的小船上,你真的是在天气的“摆布”下。所以推知at the mercy of是“在…… A.
根据文章标题“Bear Grylls's Adventure Tales”及“Below are excerpts from an interview with him.”

5.prospect n.
3.unpleasant adj.
5.significantly adv.
6.stressful adj.压力重的;紧张的 7.tend to do sth. 反应;回应 9.out of control失去控制 10.in terms of 就……而言
长难句
原句 When faced with a crisis, we find it difficult to imagine the experience will eventually lead to some type of growth.
When faced with a crisis为状语从句的省略形式,省略了we are;“we find it difficult to imagine...”

Paragraph 1:
One year later, the businessman decided to meet his old friend on New Year's Day. He was in a good mood, just like the white clouds in the blue sky. He returned to the park with the check and waited for his old friend's arrival. After a while, his friend appeared. “Thank you so much. I put the check in my safe, but it was just your check that made me full of confidence and continue to do my business again, and now I am making money again. Paragraph 2:
He realized that it was his newfound confidence that changed his life. Although the businessman put the check in his safe and didn't use it in his business, it was the check that inspired him to find self-confidence that helped him continue to do his business again and gave him the power to succeed. He told his old friend what he thought about and showed his gratitude to him again. What a meaningful experience it was for the businessman. The fact has proved that there's always a way out of any trouble as long as we are with much confidence.
