Long ago, poems were recited out loud instead of being written down. Back when the Greeks first started the Olympics, they held verse contests as well as athletic competitions.
Now, poetry competitions have been revived. 120,000 high school students competed in the first Poetry Out Loud national recitation contest, performing poems from memory for $100,000 in prize money.
The first competitions were held in classrooms. The winners went on to schoolwide contests, and next they competed in city and then state competitions, and then the 50 state champions, along with the District of Columbia champion came to Washington D.C. for the last showdown. After the 51 champions competed against one another, 12 went on to the finals. Then the field was narrowed down to five. The final five had one last chance to “perform” a poem. The overall champ, Jackson Hille, a high school senior from Ohio, won a $20,000 scholarship.
The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation started Poetry Out Loud because they realized that hearing a poem performed is a different experience from reading it on the page.
It's not just a matter of saying the words in the right order. It's the tone of voice, the pauses, the gestures, and the attitude of the person performing that bring the words to life. “Each time we hear somebody recite a poem, we understand again what we found fresh and interesting about it,” says the National Public Radio broadcaster Scott Simon, master of ceremonies for the finals. Hearing it in a new voice offers something new to the listener.
Not only do the people hearing poems have a new experience, but memorizing and presenting poems helps the participants understand those poems in a new way. Another benefit of a competition such as Poetry Out Loud is that the participants learn public speaking skills that can help them for life.

Li Bai is regarded as the greatest romantic poet of the Tang Dynasty and a representative of the High Tang culture, a combination of realistic Northern culture represented by Confucian philosophy and romantic Southern culture represented by Taoist philosophy. But he could neither realize his Confucian ideal to serve the country nor find spiritual freedom in Taoism, so he could only chant (反复唱)poetry and drink wine to drown his sorrows as described by Du Fu in Eight Immortal Drinkers.
Here we see the tragedy of a genius staying lonely on earth like an angel falling from Heaven. His try is marked by male greatness in The Waterfall in Mount Lu Viewed from Afar, in which we see the mountain cloud from down below and the Silver River, which the Chinese name the Milky Way, fall from high, and heaven and earth seem to merge into one, which is the Chinese way of communion with nature. In his poetry, we can find his love of nature, of freedom, of the people, of his friends, in short, of the truth, good and beauty.
Li Bai is best known for the extraordinary imagination and striking Taoist imagery in his poetry, as well as for his great love for liquor(烈酒). Like Du Fu, he spent much of his life travelling, though in his case it was because his wealth allowed him to, rather than because his poverty forced him to. He is said to have drowned in the Yangtze River, having fallen from his boat while drunkenly trying to embrace the reflection of the moon.
4.Which of the statements is true about Li Bai according to the passage
A.He is a representative of the combination of realistic and romantic culture.
B.He put his ability to good use in serving his country at that time.
C.He drank wine and chanted poetry to achieve his life goal.
D.He made the poems in which complaints and dissatisfaction could be shown.
5.What did Li Bai mainly describe in his poetry
A.The relationship between different classes.
B.Criticism of social realism.
C.Beautiful nature and feelings.
D.Cruelty of the officialdom.
6.What can we learn from the last paragraph
A.Li Bai liked drinking wine more than anything else.
B.Li Bai as well as Du Fu spent much time travelling.
C.Li Bai had a more extraordinary imagination than Du Fu.
D.Li Bai had to travel because he was very poor.
7.In which column of the newspaper can the passage appear
A.Literature. B.Health. C.Sports. D.Prose.

I never saw daffodils (水仙花) in Gaza. 1 When I was walking in the garden, a line from Wordsworth's poem came to mind—And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils.
My father used to say, “English is a window looking over the world.” He specialized in English Language and Literature. At home lively debates about literature or philosophy would erupt. 2 I was born into a refugee (难民) family as my father and grandmother had to leave their motherland for Kuwait because of war decades ago. When I was 13, my family travelled to Gaza but we had to stay there as a war broke out in Kuwait. I became a refugee for the second time. However, my parents were determined that my education was of the greatest importance. 3
In the following years, I studied hard and finally worked as a research fellow to investigate the impact of conflict on health in the Middle East and North Africa. During this time, I attended an artistic workshop, which offered the skills to share my research findings through the artistic media like poetry. 4 I didn't find it difficult to write—I'd be walking along, and the lines just seemed to flow out of me.
Recently, a poem inspired by my research will feature in the Creative Encounters exhibition, which forms part of the Cambridge Festival. 5 They bring a lightness and beauty, and within this lightness and beauty lies hope.
A.In this way, I rediscovered my love of poetry.
B.I specifically focused on the health of people in Gaza.
C.So they enrolled at the English department of a top university in Gaza.
D.Despite the happy atmosphere in our home, a shadow lay across our lives.
E.They knew from experience that even if everything was lost, education remained.
F.It was only when I came to the University of Cambridge that I saw them for the first time.
G.While my research can't express Gazans' sufferings, my words can be a voice of them.

UNIT 5 POEMS
Part 1 Reading and Thinking
Ⅰ.1.literary 2.recite 3.drama 4.delicate 5.diamond
故填at。
Ⅲ.1.in particular 2.is made up of 3.is popular with
Ⅳ.1.joy and sorrow;as 2.in a good mood 3.it is comfortable to sit on 4.where;share your ideas/opinions with 5.to/with whom he is talking
consist of...
A lot of Tang poetry与translate之间为被动关系(许多唐诗被翻译成英语),且poetry为不可数名词,故填has been translated。
故填to choose。
Ⅱ.A
根据第一段中“Long ago, poems were recited out loud instead of being written down.”
易错归因 本题易受“when the Greeks first started the Olympics, they held verse contests as well as athletic competitions”的影响误选B项,这里指的是希腊人最初举办奥运会时,不但进行体育竞赛,还举办诗歌比赛。
第二段中指出“Now, poetry competitions have been revived.(现在,诗歌比赛被复苏了。)”
4.narrow sth. down to sth.
Not only do the people hearing poems have a new experience, but memorizing and presenting poems helps the participants understand those poems in a new way.
分析 这是not only...but (also)...
根据第一段中的“Li Bai is regarded as...a representative of the High Tang culture, a combination of realistic Northern culture...and romantic Southern culture...”
易错归因 本题容易误选D项,原因是受第一段中“he could neither realize his Confucian ideal to serve the country nor find spiritual freedom in Taoism...drink wine to drown his sorrows”和第二段中“we see the tragedy of a genius staying lonely on earth”的影响进行臆断,认为他的诗中透露着抱怨和不满,但其实文中并没有谈到这一点,所以D项错误。
根据第二段最后一句“In his poetry, we can find his love of nature, of freedom, of the people, of his friends, in short, of the truth, good and beauty.”
根据最后一段中的“Like Du Fu, he spent much of his life travelling”可知,李白和杜甫一样花了很多时间在旅行上。
故选A。
【高频词汇】 1.be regarded as被认为是
2.representative n.
But he could neither realize his Confucian ideal to serve the country nor find spiritual freedom in Taoism, so he could only chant poetry and drink wine to drown his sorrows as described by Du Fu in Eight Immortal Drinkers.
前一个分句中to serve the country是动词不定式短语作后置定语,修饰ideal,neither...nor...
4.A 细节句。 故选A。
2.specialize v.
