A year after I left college, I was given the opportunity to host the Six O’Clock News in Baltimore. The whole goal in the media at the time was to try to move to larger markets, so getting the job at 22 was such a big deal. And I was so proud, because I was finally going to have my chance to be like Barbara Walters, who had been my idol since the start of my TV career. I was 22 in 1976, making $22,000 a year, and yet it didn’t feel right.
The first sign was when they tried to change my name. The news director said to me at the time, “Nobody’s going to remember Oprah. So, we want to change your name. We’ve come up with a name we think that people will remember and that people will like. It’s a friendly name: Suzie.”
I grew up not loving the name, but once I was asked to change it, I thought, well, it was my name and did I look like a Suzie to you I thought, no, it didn’t feel right. I was not going to change my name. And whether people remembered it or not, that was OK.
And then they said they didn’t like the way I looked, so they sent me to a salon where they gave me a perm (烫发). After a few days all my hair fell out and I had to shave my head. At last, they really didn’t like the way I looked, because I was black and bald and sitting on TV wasn’t a pretty picture.
But even worse than being bald, I really hated being sent to report on other people’s tragedies as a part of my daily duty. And after eight months, I lost that job. They said I was too emotional. But since they didn’t want to pay out the contract, they put me on a talk show. And the moment I sat down on that show, I felt like I’d come home. I realized that TV could be more than just a playground, but a platform for helping other people lift their lives. And the moment I sat down, doing that talk show, it felt like breathing. And that was where everything that followed for me began.
1.What can we infer from Paragraph 1
A.The writer’s aim after graduation was to leave Baltimore.

2.What caused the author to dislike her first job

B.Not being good at reporting on other people’s tragedies.
C.The boss’s wanting to put her on another talk show.
D.Being black and bald and sitting on TV.
3.Which can best describe Oprah
A.Careful and considerate. B.Understanding and optimistic.
C.Persuasive and emotional. D.Determined and sympathetic.
4.What can we learn from the writer’s story
A.Pride goes before a fall. B.Opportunity knocks but once.

The interview process is a part of nearly all hiring decisions. 1 The process can provide understanding about the attitude and character of the applicant.
Many people try to get interviews after seeing only a short advertisement or posting that gives only the general title and basic requirements of the job. 2 It is also for the candidate to decide whether the job is right for him or her.
3 Often, interviews are a second or final step of the hiring process, after applications and résumés have been presented. An employer may choose to interview all of the candidates, or a few top applicants that seem to have the most experience. Interviews may be conducted over the phone or in person. Phone interviews may be done to narrow down the list to only a few candidates. Since the interview process may take place weeks or months after applications are submitted, phone interviews allow the employer to know whether the applicant is still interested in the job. In person interviews permit the most detailed examination for both the candidate and the employer. 4
During the interview process, the employer may ask a variety of questions about the applicant’s motives, ambitions, experience, education, and personality. 5 Some employers may rate or grade applicants based on their answers. Ratings and grades may be weighed depending on the employer and the job. The employer will usually give the job to the person with the highest weighed rating.
A.This information is generally kept private.
B.It’s not always quick and easy to get hired.
C.So it may take longer time than a phone interview.
D.The questions you ask can make or break an interview.
E.Employers may conduct an interview process in different ways.
F.The interview may be about whether the candidate is right for the job.
G.It is considered by many experts to be the most important hiring practice.

In 1989, fresh out of high school, I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited options: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn’t interested in engineering, so I was left with medicine or business. I couldn’t decide.
My uncle, an influential person in the family, suggested that I do a work placement to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a brilliant idea.
I was accepted for a month’s placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel for how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easy going work surroundings.
The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn’t have been more different. The hospital had an intense environment. The days started early(at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.
I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement and unpredictability, but the studying and training was difficult. It seemed that the business option was going to win out.
Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved (穿梭) through traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.
Paragraph 1:
Suddenly,a boy fell off the back of the bus.

Paragraph 2:
The next day, when I went to the hospital to see the boy, all his family got up, with grateful smiles on their faces.

根据第一段中“because I was finally going to have my chance to be like Barbara Walters, who had been my idol since the start of my TV career(因为我终于有机会像芭芭拉·沃尔特斯那样,自从事电视相关的职业以来,她一直是我的偶像)”可推测,Barbara Walters是作者最崇拜的主持人,故选B。
易错归因 本题容易根据第一段最后一句“I was 22 in 1976, making $22,000 a year,and yet it didn’t feel right.(1976年我22岁,年收入2.2万美元,然而这种感觉并不好。)”
根据第五段中“But even worse than being bald, I really hated being sent to report on other people’s tragedies as a part of my daily duty.(但比秃顶更糟糕的是,我真的很讨厌被派去报道别人的悲剧,这是我日常工作的一部分。)”
根据第三段中“I was not going to change my name. And whether people remembered it or not, that was OK.”可知,作者的意志力很坚定;根据第五段中“But even worse than being bald, I really hated being sent to report on other people’s tragedies as a part of my daily duty.”
机会 2.come up with提出;想出 3.emotional adj.
4.contract n.
And I was so proud, because I was finally going to have my chance to be like Barbara Walters, who had been my idol since the start of my TV career.
because 引导原因状语从句,动词不定式短语to be like Barbara Walters作定语修饰名词chance,who引导非限制性定语从句。
根据上句“The interview process is a part of nearly all hiring decisions.”
根据下句“It is also for the candidate to decide whether the job is right for him or her.”
5.A 细节句。
Since the interview process may take place weeks or months after applications are submitted, phone interviews allow the employer to know whether the applicant is still interested in the job.

Paragraph 1:
Suddenly, a boy fell off the back of the bus. He hit the road, face down and rolled over. He lay still in the middle of the road as the bus sped away. None of the cars behind stopped. Thinking that he could die any minute, I stopped my car, rushed to him, and carefully examined his breath. After his family was contacted and he was wheeled into emergency surgery, I drove home, exhausted but happy.

I spent the rest of the day in a state of the most fabulous mood I had ever experienced. Driving home that evening, I decided on my career path, the one full of challenges and stress but also with more senses of satisfaction and pride.
