Kathy Johnston is so in love with chocolate; she lies awake at night thinking
about it. But as chief chocolate officer of Dubai-based chocolatier Mirzam, that’s a
healthy focus to have.
Like many other goods, most of Dubai’s chocolate has traditionally been
imported, but Mirzam develops home-grown alternative. Johnston joined Mirzam
in early 2016 after meeting the company’s founders, who persuaded her to work for
them, rather than chasing her original dream of moving to Switzerland, chocolate
capital of the world.
At first, the company’s plan was to mainly export its offerings to the U.S.
while slowly building a market in the United Arab Emirates (阿联酋). But locals
quickly accept the company’s unique chocolates, which are known for their Emirati
flavors and spices (香料) such as cardamom, almonds and pistachios. That Mirzam
works with local artists for its branding and packaging further strengthens its
hometown reputation. Nearly as soon as Mirzam’s team opened their doors for
tastings, the company sold out all its stock. “We didn’t expect such a strong
response locally,” Johnston says. “We had no time to think about export.”
Born in New Zealand, Johnston moved to Dubai when she was 3 years old.

Her love of chocolate goes all the way back to her childhood, when she would
build ladders out of kitchen chairs to get her mother’s hidden chocolates. She
recalls telling her grandfather that her dream was to have her own chocolate
factory.
That dream has come true at Mirzam, where Johnston oversees everything
from sourcing to production, packaging, and sales. But her true passion is coming
up with innovative new sweets, with a focus on integrating traditional Emirati
recipes into the company’s offerings.
Recipes like those have helped Mirzam grow at an amazing pace—it had
doubled its production capacity every year since opening and increased its staff
from one to 75 in five years. Now, Mirzam is still working on “producing
amazing-quality chocolate,” Johnston says.
24.Why didn’t Johnston go to Switzerland
A.She has an affection for chocolate.
B.She has a dream to import chocolate.
C.She was convinced by a chocolate company.
D.She was attracted by the chocolate capital.
25.What makes the company’s chocolates so popular
A.Unique flavors to the local taste. B.Free tastings for new products.
C.Imported sources of high quality. D.Strong responses to the local market.
26.What can we learn from the fifth paragraph
A.Johnston takes pleasure in developing new products.
B.Johnston owed her dream to her grandfather.
C.Johnston works on opening overseas markets.
D.Johnston was brought up in New Zealand.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Mirzam: Chocolate Sales Going Local
B.Johnston: “Sweet Dreams” Coming True
C.Cardamom: Emirati Recipes Catching On
D.Dubai: Home-based Businesses Taking Off

With almost all big employers in the United States now using artificial
intelligence (AI) and automation in their hiring processes, the public is considering
some urgent questions: How can you prevent discrimination in hiring when a
machine is keeping the discrimination What kind of methods might help
Some 83% of employers, including 99% of Fortune 500 companies, now use
some form of automated tools as part of their hiring process, said the Equal
Employment Opportunity Commission’s (EEOC) chair Charlotte Burrows at a
hearing on Tuesday. She said everyone needs to speak up on the debate over these

{#{QQABQYKQogCoQAIAAQgCEwUwCAGQkAGAAIoGRBAAsAAAgRNABAA=}#}
technologies. “The risks are simply too high to leave this topic just to the experts. ”
Last year, the EEOC issued some guidance around the use of cutting-edge
hiring tools, noting many of their shortcomings. The agency found that resume (简
历 ) scanners that prioritize keywords and programs that evaluate a candidate’s
facial expressions and speech patterns in video interviews can create discrimination.
Take, for example, ‘a video interview that analyzes an applicant’s speech patterns
to determine their ability to solve problems. A person with a speech problem might
score low and automatically be screened out. The problem will be for the EEOC to
root out discrimination or stop it from taking place.
The EEOC is considering the most appropriate ways to handle the problem.
It’s agreed that inspections are necessary to ensure that the software used by
companies avoids intentional or unintentional discrimination. But who would
conduct those inspections is a more challenging question. Each option presents
risks, Burrows pointed out. A third party may turn a blind eye to its clients, while a
government-led inspection could potentially stop innovation.
In previous remarks, Burrows has noted the great potential that AI
decision-making tools have to improve the lives of Americans, but only when used
properly. “We must work to ensure that these new technologies do not become a
high-tech pathway to discrimination,” she said.
28.What does Burrows suggest people do
A.Follow the experts’ suggestions.
B.Make their own voice heard.
C.Stop using AI in hiring processes.
D.Watch debates about technologies.
29.How might programs in video interviews select employees
A.By scanning keywords.
B.By evaluating resumes.
C.By interpreting speech patterns.
D.By analyzing personalities.
30.What is a possible consequence of third-party inspections
A.Unfair results.
B.High expense.
C.Age discrimination.
D.Innovation interruption.
31.What is Burrows’s attitude to AI decision-making tools
A.Favorable. B.Objective. C. Disapproving. D. Doubtful.

The sperm whale is an astonishing creature. It's longer than a semi-truck,
weighs more than 90, 000 pounds and is the largest member of the toothed whale

family. It's known to dive 6, 500 feet in search of food, and to stay down there for
longer than an hour at a time.
Perhaps most fantastically, the sperm whale's brain weighs as much as 20
pounds-the biggest of any species on Earth. But when it comes to brains, is size all
that matters There's a lot we don't know about the sperm whale's intelligence
because it's difficult to carry out neurological (神经的) testing on such a huge
marine mammal. But some clues point to sperm whales being much smarter than
we give them credit for.
A 2021 study published in Biology Letters, for example, looked back to
19th-century historical logbooks from whalers. Researchers found that sperm
whales were at first easy to catch-but almost immediately, the whales learned how
to evade hunters and whaling success dropped by 60 percent. The study suggests
that the whales passed information to one another through sound waves to avoid
being caught.
Animals that have big brains usually have a few things in common. They
usually live long lives; for example, sperm whales can live for 70 years or longer.
Additionally, they're capable of complex behaviors and they tend to be more social.
Whales may work together to hunt or communicate in a language all their own.
What's more, humans, whales and dolphins all have spindle neurons in their
brains. These nerve cells make us capable of deeper thought, such as reasoning
skills, memory, communication and adaptive thinking. And like humans, whales
have emotional intelligence-meaning they’re capable of empathy, grief and sadness.
Still, in proportion to (成比例)our body size, the human brain is bigger than that
of the sperm whale.
Yet there's still so much we don't know about how smart sperm whales really
are. And just like the whalers of a century ago, we have likely been
underestimating marine mammals, whether large or small, for as long as we've
known of their existence.
32. Why do people know little about the sperm whale's intelligence
A. Sperm whales are much smarter than human beings.
B. Sperm whales usually stay deep down in the ocean
C. Whalers didn't keep enough records of their hunting.
D. Sperm whales big size makes research difficult.
33. What does the underlined word "evade" mean in paragraph-3
A. Avoid. B.Track. C. Locate. D. Trick.
34. What conclusion can we draw from paragraph 5
A. The nerve cells distinguish humans from animals.
B. Sperm whales have smaller brains than humans.
C. Emotional intelligence is unique to whales and humans.

D. Spindle neurons make higher intelligence possible.
35. Which is the most suitable title for the text
A. Unlock the Mystery of Sea Mammals
B. Sperm Whales Have the Biggest Brain
C. Break the Code of Whale Language
D. Sperm Whales Are Astonishingly Smart

Dog people like to point out dogs’ long history as humankind’s best friend
while even the most devoted cat owners may wonder at some point whether their
cat really loves them. Actually, cats do love their owners, according to science.
36
Look out for scenting
Cats use scent to identify their own members, by sharing a group scent profile.
They have scent glands(腺)on their head and around their ears, and often rub their
heads against people and objects that are familiar and comforting. Does your cat
rub its head or side against your legs 37
Look for blinks

question mark shows a friendly intention. Wrapping their tail around your leg is
another gesture that a cat has ultimate trust in you.

Cats are very protective of their personal space and don’t like unwelcome
guests to invade it. If a cat allows you to get close to them, that suggests a close
bond, particularly where the contact is frequent or long lasting. Curling up on your
lap for a nap and licking your hand or face are signs of deep trust.

Miraculous (神奇的) Strength
One chilly, December evening, I was preparing dinner. Suddenly, while setting
the table, I heard a tremendous crash from the second floor. It was the kind of rare,
heart-stopping noise that instantly struck fear into a mother’s heart. Even the dishes
in the kitchen cupboard rattled (发出咔嗒声 )!My seven-year-old son began
screaming for help, and I raced up the stairs without even stopping to put down the
dinner fork I held in my hand.
Entering my son’s room, I found my frightened toddler (学步的儿童)trapped
under a five-drawer wooden dresser (衣橱). It had been torn from its wall anchor. I
could hear crying as I ran toward him. As I leaned over, I saw his small, bloody
face and the terror in his eyes.
I pulled the large dresser off him. At that moment, I felt I could move
mountains. I was fearful to look but quickly tried to assess how badly he was hurt.
Begging him to stay still, I dialed 911 and began to pray. I prayed for the mercy
that spared him and the healing he would need, given that I wasn’t sure of the
extent of his injuries. In those minutes before the ambulance arrived, although I
was in a chaotic situation with both my sons in tears, an inner calm kept me
focused and controlled. I felt a strong presence keeping me steady.
After the ambulance workers conducted a brief assessment, it was agreed that
he should have a more extensive examination since this was a possible chest or
head injury. A moment of pause forced me to process what had just happened. I
recalled dashing up the stairs with a sense of fear as to what 1 would find. In only a
few seconds, a lifetime of tender memories replayed in my mind. I had asked
myself, “Is he still breathing ” “Are bones broken ” One moment. I was simply
preparing dinner; the next. I was tearfully praying for my son’s life.

Learning English Beyond the Classroom
There are many things we can do to learn English well. A recent survey
suggests that the majority of students being interviewed, about 59%, tend to
learn English by listening to English songs.
In addition, 23% of the students choose to watch English movies as a way
of learning. Reading English books and visiting English learning sites prove to
be the less popular ways, accounting for 10% and 8% respectively.
Overall, the results are quite interesting, indicating that language learning
can be integrated with personal hobbies and entertainment. In the future, I
think our school could provide some activities such as book clubs or English
corners to further inspire students’ interest in learning English.
On the way to the emergency room, I tried to keep him calm. His nose was still
bleeding, and he was complaining about the bump on the back of his head. I
continued to pray for his recovery and the miracle that he survived the impact of that
heavy dresser. After testing, it was determined that he could return home. That’s a
load off my mind and I was finally relieved! The doctor said, “Wow, it was a
miracle!”I responded tearfully, “It sure was. ”
Back at the house, I found the miraculous strength that protected my son’s life a
small, hand-carved elephant. Earlier that year, we bought it as a special souvenir
when we went on a family trip to Africa. It seemed that the elephant had undertaken
the main impact of the dresser when it crashed. The carved animal was only inches
wide, but those few precious inches gave my son the space he needed to avoid
terrible injury. I will be grateful all my life for the miraculous strength that sent the

M: Good morning, class. Now I'll tell you something about the history of English.
Old English is very difficult to understand. Only a few experts can read it. Several
written works from the Old English period have remained. Perhaps the most famous
is called Beowulf. The name of the person who wrote it is not known. In 1066,
William took control of England. The language used by the new rulers slowly
changed the way English was spoken 800 years ago. English became what language
experts call Middle English. which was used between about 1150 AD and 1500 AD.
Middle English sounds like Modern English. Many written works from this period
have been passed down. Perhaps the most famous was written by Goffrey Chaucer
who lived in London and died there jin the 1400s. Chaucer's most famous work is
The Canterbury Tales, written more than 600 years ago.The history of the English
language continues as Middle English becomes Modem English. Ill talk about
Modem English after a short break.

C
答案:28.B 29.C 30.A 31.B

She said everyone needs to speak up on the
debate over these technologies. “The risks are simply too high to leave this topic
just to the experts.”(她说,每个人都需要就有关这些技术的辩论进行公开发
Burrows

根据文章第三段“The agency found that resume (简历) scanners
that prioritize keywords and programs that evaluate a candidate ’ s facial
expressions and speech patterns in video interviews can create discrimination.
Take, for example, ‘ a video interview that analyzes an applicant’ s speech

It’s agreed that inspections are necessary to
ensure that the software used by companies avoids intentional or unintentional
discrimination. But who would conduct those inspections is a more challenging
question. Each option presents risks, Burrows pointed out. A third party may turn
a blind eye to its clients, while a government-led inspection could potentially stop

故选 A。

encounter strange humans or other cats they don’t know, they usually greet them
39.根据本文小标题“Watch how they greet you(观察他们如何问候你)”可推知,
所以 F 项“One of the most obvious
signs that your beloved pet is fond of you, is the way that your cat approaches
you(你心爱的宠物喜欢你的一个最明显的迹象就是你的猫接近你的方式)”引
故选 E。
Cats are very protective of their personal space and don’t like
unwelcome guests to invade it.

Learning English Beyond the Classroom
There are many things we can do to learn English well. A recent survey
suggests that the majority of students being interviewed, about 65%, tend to
learn English by listening to English songs.
In addition, 50% of the students choose to watch English movies as a way
of learning. Reading English books and visiting English learning sites prove to
be the less popular ways, accounting for 18% and 12% respectively.
Overall, the results are quite interesting, indicating that language learning
can be integrated with personal hobbies and entertainment. In the future, I

The doctor said,“Wow, it was a
miracle!”I responded tearfully, “It sure was.
I will be grateful all my life for the miraculous strength that sent the
elephant to be my son’s life protector.
