Text10
Once there was a pianist in a bar. People came just to hear him play. But one night, a lady
was tired of listening to the piano and asked him to sing a song. So he did. He had never sung
in public before. Now he was singing for the very first time! Nobody had expected he could
sing so beautifully! All the people present had a good time and the pianist was also very happy
because he found that he could sing well.
He may have lived the rest of his life as a no-name pianist in a no-name bar. Now he
found, by accident, his ability to sing, so he went on working hard on singing. Later, the pianist
became one of the best-known singers in the US. His name was Nat King Cole. You, too, have
skills and abilities that you haven’t found. You may not feel that your talent is great, but it may
be better than you think. With hard work, most skills can be improved. Besides, you may have
no success at all if you do nothing about your talent.

第二节
At first, Michael wanted to keep it a secret and punished Steven. But it was not easy. He
felt the heat in his body rising, and his cheeks blushing. Throwing a glance at Steven, who was
chatting happily, cocking his head high, Michael suddenly felt a bit sorry for the
embarrassment he was going to face. Just at the moment Michael gasped and cried out in alarm,
“Oh hell, where is my wallet ” Some gossips began. Michael heard words of gloat.
Overwhelmed by guilt, Michael quickly picked up the wallet and strode to Steven, “I found it
over there, and I think it is yours.” Seeing the dumb founded face of Steven, he added, “I
thought of sneaking it, of course.” Recalling what he had done to Michael, Steven suddenly
hesitated to take the wallet.
“Why are you giving back ” Murmured Steven. He dodged Michael’s shining eyes,
somehow even not daring to look into them. What replied him was a sigh, “Because it belongs
to you.” After confession, the air seemed still and it became weird that no one uttered a single
word. Just at this moment, Michael’s stomach seemed to be the first to break the awkwardness
by growling loud. To his astonishment, the arrogant boy, Steven, reached out his hand,
stammering, “W…What about having lunch together ” Before Michael could say anything,
Steven quickly added, “Of course, my treat.” It was on that very day that Michael made his first
friend in the new school, and he truly reckoned the value of sincerity and honesty in a
relationship.

Working on your adventure list These national park treasures which turn
favorites during the harvest time should be on it.
Cuyahoga Valley National Park
33, 000 acres of forests wait between Cleveland and Akron, all along the
snaking Cuyahoga River. The park will delight you with plenty of outdoor
activities suiting every interest, but do not climb over the fenced areas, rocks, or
Brandywine Falls. Now the red maple trees will be visually on fire, which you can
enjoy from the comfort of the tourist railway — Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.
Gateway Arch National Park
This urban park comes back thanks to the Arch’s new Museum and Visitor
Center. Give your feet a break after walking over five miles of park pathways with

Ma Long has had a good student image since childhood.Ma, born in Anshan,
Liaoning, the “home of table tennis”, was sent by his father to practise table tennis
when he was 5 years old, and he went to Shenyang at the age of 11. At 15, Ma
Long joined the national team. Although he was the least talkative boy of the
players, his perseverance (坚持不懈) was as great as his overall strength in table
tennis. In 2006, at 18, Ma Long, together with his teammates, won a team world
championship.
Behind early fame of the genius is Ma Long’s almost paranoid (偏执的 )
strictness towards himself. His daily routine throughout four seasons was a
two-point line between the dormitory and the training hall, and he was the first to
arrive and the last to leave on a daily basis. He had been doing so for ten years,
monotonously(单调乏味地) and repetitively. His coach Liu Guoliang once said, “I
went to the table tennis hall on a Sunday morning for an unannounced inspection to
see how many players were training on Sunday. Only one person in the men’s first
team was there. A genius is not your fear, but your fear is that a genius works
harder than you do.” Such a genius is Ma Long.

However, after joining the team for nearly a decade, he suffered various types
of failure, and thus was questioned by everyone. At that time, Zhang Jike, another
top player, returned to the national team. From then on, Zhang was so invincible
that he achieved the personal Grand Slam (大满贯) within only 445 days, which
was done in the shortest time in record. Seeing Zhang’s achievements, Ma Long, at
the lowest point, had the idea of retiring. But he was unwilling to just “disappear”.
Then came the Suzhou 2015 World Championship, Ma Long crowned his
career, winning the singles champion, and it had been ten years since he won a
world championship last time. This title seemed to give him new prospect and all
of his efforts paid off.
24. What can we know about Ma Long in Paragraph 1
A. He was an outgoing and sociable person.
B. He won the first world single championship at 18.
C. He started to practise at 5 in the absence of his parents.
D. He stood out for his determination and professional skills.
25. What can we infer about Ma Long according to Liu Guoliang
A. Years of training witnessed(见证,目击) his loneliness.
B. He was worn-out and under inspection every day.
C. Hardship and fears swallowed him without mercy(怜悯).
D. The road to fame was never smooth but rather tough.
26. What does the underlined word “invincible” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Approachable(可接近的,可到达的) B. Matchless.
C. Selfless. D. Unbearable.
27. What is the suitable title for the text

English is full of funny expressions that don’t always make sense. Idioms are
phrases and sentences that do not mean exactly what they say. Even if you know
the meaning of each word, you may not understand the idiom because you don’t
understand the culture behind it. Here are some English idioms based on animals.
When children jump around and act silly, their parents may tell them to stop

“monkeying around”. To “monkey around” means to do things that are not useful
or serious, or to simply waste time.
Many American families have and love pet dogs. But for some unknown
reason, Americans use “dog” in a phrase that means to feel unwell. If you are “as
sick as a dog”, you’re really, really sick.
Sometimes you may also hear cats mentioned in conversations, “I told you to
keep that secret, but you have just ‘let the cat out of the bag’!” You probably
guessed it—that idiom means to reveal a secret or tell facts that were previously(先
前) unknown.
Dogs and cats don’t always get along, but they appear side by side in a
commonly used idiom. When it rains heavily, people might say it’s “raining cats
and dogs”.
Heavy rain often ruins people’s plans for outdoor activities. But on a lovely
day, you can have a picnic. If a swarm (一群) of tiny bugs love your food and start
to hover (盘旋) around you, it would be really annoying. That experience perfectly
explains why people often tell someone who keeps bothering them to “stop
bugging me”.
Idioms are very common in both spoken and written English. If you want to
have a better understanding of English, you have to learn idioms.
28.According to Paragraph 1, idioms are _______.
A.expressions which are based on animals
B.expressions with rich cultural background
C.expressions that always make sense
D.expressions which are easy to understand
29.“Monkeying around” can be used to describe children _______.
A.jumping around and wasting time
B.doing something useful and serious
C.playing with monkeys with their parents
D.spending time playing with their family pets
30.What can be learned from the text
A.Dogs and cats always get along nicely.
B.Bugs can be used to show your annoyance.
C.Americans believe cats can give away secrets.
D.Americans use the idiom “as sick as a dog” to describe a healthy man.

A.By sharing experiences. B.By making comparisons.
C.By giving examples. D.By listing figures.

It’s normal for teens to want to stay connected with friends and social circle,
but what about that happening in the middle of the night The Journal of Youth
Studies recently published new research showing that one in five teens from 12 to
15 regularly wake to spend all night on social media (社会媒体). Not surprisingly,
the research also showed that these social night owls were three times more likely
than others to feel tired at school and that girls were more likely than boys to be
called to office.
The blue light produced by cell phones and computers makes the brain to stay
awake, so it's easy to see why a teen might be up all night. A study in Psychological
Science showed the same brain reaction: when teens saw large numbers of “likes”
on their posts, they stayed awake with excitement as if they had eaten chocolates or
won money. Besides not catching up on sleep and interrupting their sleep cycle,
teens may never fully enter deep sleep that may be responsible for brain
development and learning.
Considering about 72 percent of children from 6 to 17 sleep with some
electronic media in their bedrooms, parents need to set rules sooner rather than
later.
“Providing access (使用机会) to social media is a favor that children can earn
and also lose,” Janie Feldman, an expert who treats sleep disorders (紊乱), reminds
parents, “The bad effect is clear. So teens and parents should discuss and agree on
its use, timing and access. When teenagers agree to the rules, it’s easier for parents
to control how much time they use the phones or computers.”
32. What does the underlined part “night owls” in paragraph 1 refer to
A. Girls often called to office.
B. Teens who stay up late on social media.
C. Teens who are busy with their homework at night.
D. Boys regularly waking in the middle of the night.
33. How do teens react when seeing many “likes” on their posts according to the
study
A. They are too excited to go to sleep. B. They fall asleep easily and happily.

C. They are too excited to go to school.

34. What suggestion does Janie Feldman give to parents
A. Making rules about media access together with their children.
B. Getting their children to do homework through computers.
C. Encouraging their children to stay connected with online friends.
D. Stopping their children from using cell phones.
35. What is the main idea of the text
A. Deep sleep makes a big difference to brain development.
B. Kids are trying to win back the trust of their parents.
C. Social media may have a bad effect on all kinds of people.
D. Social media may cause teens’ sleep disorders.

For many kids, reading doesn’t come easily. For parents, they can read with
their kids often, and trying these simple ways can help their kids become excited
about reading.
36 Kids are more likely to read something that interests them. For
example, comics or joke books can be a fun pick for them. Once children are
comfortable with reading, parents can encourage other options with a variety of
more challenging content.
Read and reread. 37 Repetition is good! It helps them learn the text
and in time read it with confidence. Each new reading of the book also may help
them notice something new and understand the story a little better. And that
positive experience can inspire them to try new books.
Read aloud. Reading aloud to kids helps them build their vocabulary,
introduces new facts and ideas, and helps them connect sounds with letters on the
page. By reading with kids, parents also show they enjoy reading for fun
themselves! 38
Create opportunities to read and write beyond the pages. It is necessary for
parents to provide kids with many chances to read every day. Parents can write
notes and leave them on children’s pillows, in a lunchbox or in a pocket. Parents
can also ask friends and relatives to send postcards, letters, emails or text messages.

39 And parents may find children also creating words, sentences and stories.
Teaching children to make a thank-you note in return for a thoughtful gift is useful,
too.
Get help if parents are worried. If parents are concerned about their children’s
abilities or willingness to read, they can get help. 40 The experts may be
able to suggest ways to help children to get excited about reading.
A.Start with kids’ choices.
B.Reading aloud is not difficult for kids.
C.Parents should pick their own favorite readings.
D.Many kids reach for the same books again and again.
E.Parents had better talk to their children’s doctors or teachers.
F.Reading aloud provides time for parents and kids to enjoy together.
G.Besides, parents can leave some special letters and words on the fridge.

Michael was a 13-year-old boy who was very honest and diligent. Recently, he

On Monday morning, he was nearly late for school. The night before, his family
attended his cousin’s wedding and reached home late, which was why he couldn’t
get up on time as usual.
At school, Michael could not pay attention to anything but waited for the bell
to ring so that he could buy something to eat. The moment the bell rang, he quickly
opened his schoolbag to find his money, but just then he remembered that he had
left for school in a hurry in the morning and forgotten to take money. He looked
under his books, hoping to find some money but there was nothing.

When he went towards Steven and asked if he could borrow some money for
his lunch, Steven laughed a lot and said, “I knew you were a loser, maybe a
beggar ” Steven laughed out so loud that other kids also heard and made fun of the
situation. He didn’t answer Steven, and slowly walked back towards an empty
bench.
When he reached the bench, he noticed something lying near it. It was a wallet.
