“Have you checked the oil in the car ” my father used to say to me, his version of “Hello, hope you are well.” Sometimes our phone calls would begin with an inquiry about the oil and end with one about the oil.
Fathers have a lot of love to give, but it’s often supplied through the medium of practical advice. In my experience: it’s mostly about my motor vehicle. My student car — an old green Toyota bought for $500 — was the vehicle for which my father carved his paternal (父亲的) affections. I bet it’s always been so.
Why can’t fathers just say “I love you” or “It’s great to see you” The point is: You just have to translate from the language that is Fatherlish. Listen closely enough and the phrase “love you” can be heard in the slightly lengthier “I could come around Saturday and replace the seal around the base of your toilet because I assume that thing is getting really smelly.” The affectionate phrase “You made my life better from the moment you were born” may be rarely heard, but there is the more common “I’ll hold the ladder while you get the leaves off the roof.”
When I was 17, I went on my first road trip in that Toyota. My father stood on the corner. “Highways are dangerous,” he said, “so don’t try overtaking anything faster than a horse and carriage. And take a break every two hours. And every time you stop for gas, you really should check the oil.” At that time we thought his speech was pretty funny and would repeat “horse-and-carriage” every time I sped up to overtake some other speeding vehicles.
Dad’s long gone now. But after all these years, I realize that had I owned a copy of the Fatherlish-to-English dictionary, I’d have understood that the speech my friend and I so laughed at was simply dad’s attempt at affection.
4.According to the passage, how do fathers usually show their love
A.By inquiring their kids’ cars.
B.By doing rather than saying.
C.By offering helpful advice.
D.By accompanying their kids.

6.What does the author think of his father’s speech at last
A.Funny. B.Pleasing. C.Annoying. D.Caring.
7.What is probably the best title for the passage
A.Love in Fatherlish

C.Father’s Advice
D.My First Road Trip In Toyota

As we all know, insects can be remarkably agile (灵活的) in flight. This is really hard to build into flying robots, but MIT Assistant Professor Kevin Yufeng Chen has developed an insect-sized drone (无人机) that approaches insects’ agility.
Typically, drones require wide open spaces. “If we look at most drones today, they’re usually quite big,” says Chen. “Most of their applications involve flying outdoors. The question is: Can you create an insect-sized drone that can move around in very crowded and complex spaces ”
According to Chen, he overcame many problems when building the drone. The insect-sized drone requires a fundamentally different construction from a larger one. The large drone is usually powered by a motor, but the motor loses efficiency as you shrink it. So, Chen says, “For an insect-sized drone, you need to look for alternatives.” The principal alternative until now has been employing a small, rigid actuator (执行器) built from new materials. Chen designed a more agile tiny drone using soft actuators instead of hard ones.
Each actuator can beat nearly 500 times per second and weighs just 0.6 gram, approximately the mass of a large bee. It gives the drone insect-like agility. “You can hit it when it’s flying, and it can recover,” says Chen. “It can also turn over in the air.” The drone looks a bit like a tiny cassette tape with wings, though Chen is also working on a new one shaped like a dragonfly.
Chen says his drone can be useful in industry and agriculture. It can perform machinery inspections to ensure safety and function. Its potential applications include completing search-and-rescue missions following a disaster. “All those things can be very difficult for existing large-scale drones,” Chen explains.
8.What can we know about the actuator designed by Chen
A.It weighs about six grams.
B.It drives the insect-sized drone.
C.It loses efficiency too much.
D.It employs conventional materials.
9.Which word can best describe Chen’s work
A.Easy. B.Costly. C.Fruitless. D.Challenging.
10.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us about the new drone
A.Its safety standards. B.Its flying range.
C.Its possible applications. D.Its design principle.
11.Which is the most suitable title for the text
A.An Insect-like Small Drone
B.The Future of Insect-sized Drones
C.How Drones Will Change the Agriculture
D.What Challenge Drone Development Faces

If someone were to ask me what it is like to be a student now, I would probably answer them like this: being a student in today’s society is not always easy.
Adults often tell us that we don’t know what stress is. But we have our own levels of stress. Many students in their high school years start their first job, so now you have school in the mornings, followed by responsibilities at home and work. By the time you are done there, you are too tired to finish your school work, but you stay up late to finish and return to school feeling sleepy the next day. What good is that
Let’s not forget about peer (同龄人) pressure. All high school students meet with it at some point in their lives. High school can be a place where students are made fun of, singled out and pointed at.
My point is: it is a whole lot more stressful to be a student in high school than adults believe. Our stress may not include paying bills, but I’m sure if the adults in our lives could go back to school today, they would be surprised at how much it has changed.
I admit that there aren’t good moments and memories while we are students. My mum always tells me to enjoy it while I can. I know that the world outside of school is often hard and that the responsibilities are serious. That’s exactly why I know that the focus I give to my future is important in leading me to a career that will allow me to contribute (贡献) to society.
12.What is the author’s attitude to high school students’ working part-time
A.He is against it. B.He feels proud of it.
C.He considers it worth a try. D.He thinks it does them good.
13.What does the author think of today’s adults
A.They are proud of high school students.
B.They expect too much of high school students.
C.They are more stressed than high school students.
D.They don’t fully understand high school students.
14.What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to
A.Stress. B.Schoolwork. C.Part-time job. D.School life.
15.What is the text mainly about
A.The roles of the youth in today’s society.
B.The stressful life of high school students.
C.The way to deal with stress of school life.
D.The differences between parents and high school students.

What a comedian can teach you about managing stress
We often accept stress as part of the cost of modern life, but it really doesn’t have to be. We all know that laughter is the best medicine. 16 People who can laugh at their own misfortunes bounce back faster and stronger. Here is what a comedian says about coping with stress.
You can try to find a different perspective. 17 Once a friend of mine fell asleep in the middle of a class. His teacher decided to make fun of him by inviting students to applaud, wondering whether my friend would applaud along when he woke up. He did and the whole class burst outlaughing. After learning everything, he was both embarrassed and ashamed of course but after a while, my friend laughed. “If this had happened to someone else, it would have been amusing. So it’s no less funny, just because it happened to me. “
18 There’s no doubt that we all experience great stress now and then. We’ve all been personally affected, in some way. You might not have felt like laughing at the time But now, looking back, you could consider all of the strange aspects of the experience and all of the things you did to keep active or simply stay sane
When you share stories with your friends, you can choose to share stories of trauma (创伤) and pain, or you can choose to lift their spirits with stories of hope and growth. 19 Take the exact same story and change the focus from “feel sorry for me” to “laugh with me”. Keep in mind that we’re all in this together, that we all share the same ridiculous experiences, and that we can laugh together at whatever life throws at us. 20
A.Always share a good story.
B.Why not do what comedians do
C.You can also look again and laugh.
D.But laughter does more than cheer you up.
E.Then you are able to make a simple choice.
F.In this way. you will say goodbye to stress forever.
G.If you have trouble seeing the funny side, you may find the following inspiring.

Eric was working in a selling business. He had been on the road visiting people for more than a month without going home. He couldn't wait to get back to see his wife and children. It was coming up on Mother's Day, and he usually tried to make it “back home", but this year he was just too busy and too tired. The day when he was driving in a small town, he saw a flower shop. He said to himself, "I know what I will do, I'll send my mother some roses ."
He stopped and went into the flower shop and saw a young man talking to the girl in it “How many roses can I get for fifty dollars. Ms. " the boy asked. The girl was trying to explain that roses were expensive. Maybe the young man would be happy with something else.
"No. I have to have roses,'' he said, "my mom was badly sick last year and I didn't get to spend much time with her. 1 want to get something special. It has to be red roses, because that is her favorite." He was stubborn,
The girl in the shop looked up at Eric and was just shaking her head. Something inside of Eric was touched by the boy's voice. He wanted to get those roses so badly. Eric had been blessed(幸运的)in his business, and he looked at the girl and silently said that he would pay for the boy's roses.
The girl looked at the young man and said, "OK, I will give you a dozen red roses for your dollars.'' The young man almost jumped into the air. He took the flowers and ran down the store. It was worth more than fifty dollars just to see that kind of excitement.
Eric ordered his own flowers and asked the girl to have it delivered to his mother. After that, with a relief he drove down the road. Not long after his driving, he saw the boy walking to a graveyard(墓地).

1.C 2.A 3.B
根据第一段“Volunteering for teens is an educational, mind-opening and life-enriching travel experience.”(青少年志愿服务是一种教育性、开放性和丰富生活的旅行体验。)及“International Volunteer HQ specializes in offering safe and affordable volunteer opportunities for high school students and teens in more than 17 destinations around the globe.”(国际志愿者总部专门为全球17多个目的地的高中生和青少年提供安全、负担得起的志愿者机会。)
How to volunteer as a teenager overseas:标题下“Once you have decided where to volunteer and which project you would like to join, you can apply online.”(一旦你决定了在哪里做志愿者以及你想加入哪个项目,你就可以在线申请。) 故选A项。
There are a number of ways you can volunteer with IVHQ depending on your age:标题下第一段Under 16:“You must have parental/guardian permit and be accompanied on the program by a designated guardian over the age of 18.”(您必须持有父母/监护人许可证,并由18岁以上的指定监护人陪同参加该项目。)
4.C 5.B 6.D 7.A
根据第二段“Fathers have a lot of love to give, but it’s often supplied through the medium of practical advice.
第三段第一句“Why can’t fathers just say ‘I love you’ or ‘It’s great to see you’ (父亲们为什么不能直接说‘我爱你’或者‘见到你真高兴’呢?)”提出问题:父亲为什么不能直接表达爱;下文“The point is: You just have to translate from the language that is Fatherlish. Listen closely enough and the phrase ‘love you’ can be heard in the slightly lengthier ‘I could come around Saturday and replace the seal around the base of your toilet because I assume that thing is getting really smelly.’ The affectionate phrase ‘You made my life better from the moment you were born’ may be rarely heard, but there is the more common ‘I’ll hold the ladder while you get the leaves off the roof.’(关键是:你只需要从父亲式的语言中翻译出来。
根据最后一段“Dad’s long gone now. But after all these years, I realize that had I owned a copy of the Fatherlish-to-English dictionary, I’d have understood that the speech my friend and I so laughed at was simply dad’s attempt at affection.
文章第一段“‘Have you checked the oil in the car ’ my father used to say to me, his version of ‘Hello, hope you are well.’ Sometimes our phone calls would begin with an inquiry about the oil and end with one about the oil.(‘你检查过车里的油了吗?’ 作者列举了父亲和自己对话的方式和内容;第二段“Fathers have a lot of love to give, but it’s often supplied through the medium of practical advice. In my experience: it’s mostly about my motor vehicle. My student car — an old green Toyota bought for $500 — was the vehicle for which my father carved his paternal (父亲的) affections. I bet it’s always been so.(父亲有很多爱要给予,但通常是通过实用的建议来提供的。 故选A。
8.B 9.D 10.C 11.A
根据第三段中“The large drone is usually powered by a motor, but the motor loses efficiency as you shrink it. So, Chen says, “For an insect-sized drone, you need to look for alternatives.” The principal alternative until now has been employing a small, rigid actuator (执行器) built from new materials. Chen designed a more agile tiny drone using soft actuators instead of hard ones.”(大型无人机通常由电机驱动,但当你缩小它时,电机就会失去效率。
根据第三段中“According to Chen, he overcame many problems when building the drone. The insect-sized drone requires a fundamentally different construction from a larger one. The large drone is usually powered by a motor, but the motor loses efficiency as you shrink it.”(据Chen说,他在制造无人机时克服了许多问题。
根据最后一段中“Chen says his drone can be useful in industry and agriculture. It can perform machinery inspections to ensure safety and function. Its potential applications include completing search-and-rescue missions following a disaster.”(Chen说他的无人机在工业和农业上都很有用。
通读全文,尤其是第一段中“This is really hard to build into flying robots, but MIT Assistant Professor Kevin Yufeng Chen has developed an insect-sized drone (无人机) that approaches insects’ agility.”(这真的很难植入飞行机器人中,但麻省理工学院助理教授Kevin Yufeng Chen已经开发出一种昆虫大小的无人机,接近昆虫的敏捷性。) 故选A项。

根据第二段中“Many students in their high school years start their first job, so now you have school in the mornings, followed by responsibilities at home and work. By the time you are done there, you are too tired to finish your school work, but you stay up late to finish and return to school feeling sleepy the next day. What good is that 故选A。
根据第二段中“Adults often tell us that we don’t know what stress is. But we have our own levels of stress.(成年人经常告诉我们,我们不知道什么是压力。 以及第四段“My point is: it is a whole lot more stressful to be a student in high school than adults believe. Our stress may not include paying bills, but I’m sure if the adults in our lives could go back to school today, they would be surprised at how much it has changed.(我想说的是:高中生的压力比成年人想象的要大得多。
根据最后一段中的“I admit that there aren’t good moments and memories while we are students. My mum always tells me to enjoy it while I can. I know that the world outside of school is often hard and that the responsibilities are serious.
根据文章第一段“If someone were to ask me what it is like to be a student now, I would probably answer them like this: being a student in today’s society is not always easy.(如果有人问我现在的学生是什么感觉,我可能会这样回答他们:在当今社会做学生并不总是容易的。)”以及第二段第一句“Adults often tell us that we don’t know what stress is. But we have our own levels of stress.(成年人经常告诉我们,我们不知道什么是压力。 由此可知,全文主要围绕高中学生充满压力的生活展开,因此B项“The stressful life of high school students.(高中生紧张的生活。)”

16.前文提到“We all know that laughter is the best medicine.”(我们都知道笑容是最好的良药),后文提到“People who can laugh at their own misfortunes bounce back faster and stronger.”(能对自己的不幸一笑置之的人能更快更坚强地振作起来。) D项“But laughter does more than cheer you up.”(但是笑不仅仅是让你开心。)旨在说明笑不只是让人心情好起来,它还有后文提到的“Here is what a comedian says about coping with stress.”(以下是一位喜剧演员对应对压力的看法。)
17.第二段第一句提到“You can try to find a different perspective. G项“If you have trouble seeing the funny side, you may find the following inspiring.”(如果你很难看到有趣的一面,你可能会发现下面的故事很鼓舞人心。)
18.空处位于段首,由此判断该句应为该段的主题句,后文提到“You might not have felt like laughing at the time But now, looking back, you could consider all of the strange aspects of the experience and all of the things you did to keep active or simply stay sane (神志正常的) .”(当时你可能不想笑,但现在,回头看,你可以考虑所有奇怪的方面的经验和所有的事情,你做了保持活跃或只是保持理智。) C项“You can also look again and laugh.”(你可以回过头看看,然后大笑一场) 该项符合文意,故选C。
19.前文提到“When you share stories with your friends, you can choose to share stories of trauma (创伤) and pain, or you can choose to lift their spirits with stories of hope and growth.”(当你和朋友分享故事时,你可以选择分享创伤和痛苦的故事,也可以选择用希望和成长的故事来鼓舞他们的精神。)后文提到“Take the exact same story and change the focus from “feel sorry for me” to “laugh with me”. 结合文章标题“What a comedian can teach you about managing stress”(喜剧演员可以教你如何管理压力)可知,喜剧演员会让观众一起笑起来。B项“Why not do what comedians do ”(为什么不学学喜剧演员呢 )B项符合文意,故选B。
20.前文提到“Keep in mind that we’re all in this together, that we all share the same ridiculous experiences, and that we can laugh together at whatever life throws at us. E项“Then you are able to make a simple choice.”(然后你就可以做一个简单的选择。)
