I am sitting at the table in my favorite Boston bookstore-café, laptop open, writing. Ten minutes ago I ordered coffee. The server—a young, dark-haired woman with a broad smile and glasses—stopped and quietly said, “I just want to tell you how much your TED talk meant to me, you helped me find out what I really wanted to do with my life—go to medical school—and then you helped me do what I needed to do to get there. Thank you.”
Tears in my eyes, I asked, “What’s your name ”
“Fetaine,” she said. Then we talked for the next ten minutes about Fetaine’s challenges in the past and new-found excitement about her future.
Everyone who communicates with me is special and memorable, but this kind of communication happens far more often than I’d ever have expected: a stranger warmly greets me, shares a personal story about how they successfully dealt with difficulties, and then simply thanks me for my part in it. They are women and men, old and young, poor and wealthy. But something connects them: all have felt powerless in the face of great pressure and anxiety(焦虑), and all discovered a quite simple way to free themselves from that feeling of powerlessness.
For most writers, the book comes first, then the responses. For me, it was the other way around. First, I performed experiments that led to a talk I gave at the TEDGlobal conference in 2012. In that talk, I discussed some interesting findings about how we can quickly increase our confidence and decrease(减轻) our anxiety in challenging situations. I also shared my own troubles and how I learned to become more confident. Soon after the twenty-one-minute video of the talk was posted on the Internet, I began hearing from people who had seen it.
Of course, watching my talk didn’t magically give Fetaine the knowledge she needed to do well on Medical College Admission Test. But it may have helped her get out of the fear that could have prevented her from expressing the things she knew.
24. What happened in the Boston bookstore-café
A. The writer waited ten minutes for her coffee.
B. The writer came across a friend of hers.
C. A waitress expressed her thanks to the writer.
D. A waitress encouraged the writer to give a TED talk.
25. What do those people who communicate with the writer have in common
A. They once faced problems and felt helpless.
B. They shared personal stories about strangers.
C. They were famous but under great pressure.
D. They were afraid to communicate with others.
26. What may be the theme of the writer’s talk in 2012
A. How to increase confidence. B. How to perform meaningful experiments.
C. How to overcome anxiety in a talk. D. How to find interesting things in life.
27. How did the writer influence Fetaine in the writer’s eyes
A. She gave Fetaine power to look to the future.
B. She helped Fetaine with her knowledge.
C. She advised Fetaine to go to medical school.
D. She helped Fetaine to get a good job.
C
Clark’s Nutcrackers generally live in high mountain whitebark pine (白皮松) forests. They seem to prefer forests that open or, at least, with frequent openings. The bird has a gray body with black wings and tail. If you were to draw a cartoon combining a crow with a woodpecker( KNA), you would have the Clark’s Nutcracker. It is a member of the family Corvidae, which includes crows. It was first discovered during the Lewis and Clark Expedition — the first American expedition to cross what is now the western part of the US. Clark described it as “some form of woodpecker”.
The nutcracker consumes the seeds of the whitebark pine. In late summer and fall, the tracker will begin to store its seeds. The bird buries the seeds in the soil. A single Clark’s Nutcracker may store upwards of 30, 000 seeds each year, and there may be as many as 1, 000 separate storage sites. In the winter, they will get the seeds back for food.
This creature, however, does not just rely on its food stores. Much of its diet consists of pine seeds and the remainder is composed of nuts, berries, insects, eggs, and in the winter dead animals flesh. They search for food in the trees and on the ground. They catch insects out of midair in flight. Occasionally, the bird becomes a woodpecker using its specialized mouth to pound dead wood for insects.
The nutcracker possesses the behavior suitable to spread the seeds constantly.
The bird stores them deep enough in the soil to greatly reduce the problem of rodents (啮齿动物) finding the seeds. It will certainly fail to get back a certain percentage of its food. The unused seeds will then start to grow and become new trees so not only does the Clark’s Nutcracker take advantage of the whitebark pine, the tree uses the bird too.
28. What do we know about the Clark’s Nutcracker
A. It looks like a kind of crow
B. It has bright and colorful body
C. It likes living in the riverside.
D. It belongs to a species of Corvidae.
29. Which of the following best describes the nutcracker
A. caring and fierce
B. sensitive and beautiful
C. hardworking and intelligent
D. clever and selfless
30. What does the last paragraph convey
A. The nutcracker can help to spread seeds.
B. The nutcracker faces the danger of dying out.
C. Rodents are the whitebark pine’s main enemies.
D. The birds can hide their food inside the whitebark pine.

【原文】
Hi, my name is Sam Conti and my job is making and selling chocolate. People often ask how I got into this business. Well, my parents wanted me to study medicine or economics at university, but at the time I thought law might open more doors, so that’s what I did. But life doesn’t always work out the way you plan it.
After college, I spent one year in South America, where I fell in love with growing cocoa beans. It is not an easy job, because cocoa beans can be easily affected by weather—much more than other fruit like apples or bananas. In fact, the beans are more like grapes, so each year’s crop is of a different quality.
When I came home, I decided to open a small shop making and selling my own chocolate. That was hard work I can tell you, because so much can go wrong with chocolate. The hardest bit is melting it in the right way, but cooling it correctly isn’t easy, either. To learn the trade, I set about testing all the chocolate I could find.
Another thing I like to do is write up my experiments I keep a diary for this. It’s the key to my success.

B. The nutcracker faces the danger of dying out.
C. Rodents are the whitebark pine’s main enemies.
D. The birds can hide their food inside the whitebark pine.

【答案】
The Quality I Value Most
Good morning, everyone! Qualities will determine what you can achieve. The quality which I think is of the most importance is the spirit of craftsmanship.
As we all know, craftsmanship is mainly made up of perseverance, integrity, diligence and expertise. Take the clock restoration master, Wang Jin, for example. With skillful hands and a modest heart, Mr. Wang spent his whole life restoring clocks dating back to hundreds of years, which not only helps preserve traditional skills but also brings the clocks back to life. Most importantly, his innovation and unremitting devotion ensure that the art of clock repairing stands the test of time. Therefore, from my perspective, the spirit of craftsmanship, which includes devoting ourselves to work, sharpening our skills and overcoming difficulties with perseverance, is the necessary and significant quality for us human beings.
The spirit of craftsmanship is what has helped a great number of achievement makers, and it is well worth possessing.
Thank you for your attention.
