Painting is silent poetry, and poetry is painting that speaks.
--- Simonides of Ceos西莫尼德斯(古希腊抒情诗人)
When will the moon be clear and bright
With a cup of wine in my hand, I ask the blue sky.
I don't know what season it would be in the heavens on this night.
I'd like to ride the wind to fly home.
Yet I fear the crystal and jade mansions are much too high and cold for me.
Dancing with my moon-lit shadow,
It does not seem like the human world.
The moon rounds the red mansion, stoops to silkpad doors,
Shines upon the sleepless. Bearing no grudge,
Why does the moon tend to be full when people are apart
People may have sorrow or joy, be near or far apart,
The moon may be dim or bright, wax or wane,
This has been going on since the beginning of time.
May we all be blessed with longevity. Though far apart, we are still able to
share the beauty of the moon together.
Prelude to Water Melody
Poetry is an expression of one’s will. What is kept in the heart is the will, but when expressed in words, it is poetry.
—— “Preface to The Book of Songs”

Dear Tim:
As for you last letter asking about the way to appreciate poetry. I’m more than delighted to tell you something in detail.
Poetry, personally/on my personal note, is a painting that can speak. It adds to the beauty of life and gives an important insight into it. When we appreciate a poem, we should first attach importance to its sound to detect/feel its rhythm. Picturing what it shows in your mind can also help you to better understand it. Sometimes, the poems can be quite difficult to understand. What you need to do is be patient and read it again and again. With persistence, sooner or later, you can get it across one day, which is really rewarding. Most importantly, it is unnecessarily to be understood as long as you can feel something of perceive another level of meaning in it.
Hopefully, you can better explore the world of poetry with my advice.
Yours,
Li Hua
