谭盾,作曲家,1958年出生,湖南人。1986年毕业于中央音乐学院研究生院,1986年获美国哥伦比亚大学奖学金,赴美国哥伦比亚大学,随大卫·多夫斯基及周文中学习并获得音乐艺术博士学位。他获得了1983年德里斯顿·韦伯尔作曲比赛二等奖。被新闻界、艺术界称为“新潮音乐”、“先锋派音乐”、“崛起的一代”中的代表人物之一,到美国后,数家知名乐团聘他为乐团作曲,并出任BBC交响乐团(苏格兰)驻团作曲兼副指挥,1988年在美国举办了个人作品音乐会,这是中国音乐家在美国首次举办的音会。
