Building with 3D printing technology is sparking widespread interest in the construction industry. Besides reducing waste and our impact on the environment, it can speed up construction from weeks, or months, to days. To see how the technology can change the world around us, here are some projects that highlight bold ideas in 3D print building.
Instant Neighborhood
Community building takes on new meaning with the creation of a neighborhood of 3D printed homes in Tabasco, Mexico, aimed at tackling global homelessness. American non-profit New Story and tech company ICON built each concrete house from start to completion in 24 hours. New Story says its aim is to provide shelter for people without homes around the world.
Nested Housing
Shamballa is the idea of Italian 3D print construction company WASP. This project uses soil and straw to build a home in days that cost only 48 Euros in materials and energy. Its round designs are based on the wasp (黄蜂) nest. Each home features a laboratory with a desktop 3D printer for making furniture, artistic objects and more.
Think Schools
African island state Madagascar is hosting one of the world’s most forward-thinking school building projects. Non-profit Thinking Huts is using 3D print technology to provide schools where children have little or no access to education. Schools are built using local materials and low carbon concrete in under a week.
Concrete Steps
Researchers at the Swiss University ETH Zurich used concrete 3D printing to build the 16 metre long curved Striatus footbridge in a couple of days. The project used 500 layers of concrete and 53 hollow blocks, held in place by compression (压缩). This reduces materials by up to 70 per cent, and the entire bridge can be pulled down and recycled.
1. What could be the inspiration behind the design of Nested Housing
A. A featured laboratory. B. A forward-thinking school.
C. A round wasp nest. D. A long stone bridge.
2. Which 3D construction project can be torn down and reused
A Instant Neighborhood. B. Concrete Steps.
C. Think School. D. Nested Housing.
3. What do these four 3D building projects have in common
A. They use local materials. B. They make construction faster.
C. They are affordable to the homeless. D. They are high in cost.
Passpage B
Reviewing photos fresh from the printer and discussing new ideas in the meeting room, I express my creative side by translating real-world trends and topics into the print in the SHSID, the school magazine of Shanghai High School International Division.
I was first interested in visuals and design because of their power to communicate ideas. Throughout my three and a half years in the design department of the SHSID, I’ve faced the ongoing challenge of translating ideas into visuals that are not only appealing, but also informative.
In the early days of my participation as a freshman designer, every issue of the magazine came with frustration from struggling over the difficulties of Photoshop to seeing my designs changed completely by the editors working above me. However, after constant experiments and many long months of practicing, I finally started to understand the key elements of the position. Two years later, I was offered the job of creative director.
The newly earned position came with unique challenges. Unlike a normal art piece or design, spread, designing a bimonthly (双月刊), 52-page magazine is really challenging. The finished product must contain not only my ideas, but also those of other department directors and the 20 members of my team. Through waves of differing opinions over the years, I’ve learned much about negotiation, leadership, and compromise.
Applying these lessons still produces a sense of accomplishment: the feeling of joy as repostsof our video projects fill everyone’s news feeds; the satisfaction as fellow designers come up with ideas of inspiration; the excitement whenever others offer the magazine praise. These moments make the long nights of frozen computer screens and staying up late completely worth it.
By the September/October 2017 issue, the magazine had achieved all that I’d hoped for. Through authentic and catching photo spreads, illustrations (插画) and articles, we’ve done everything from communicating ideas on shifting pop culture identity to building a greater appreciation for Chinese culture in our school community.
4. What does the author do now
A. A director. B. An editor. C. A photographer. D. A designer.
5. What made the author feel frustrated at the beginning
A. He couldn’t use some software well.
B. He couldn’t stand others changing his design.
C. He didn’t do many experiments and practice.
D. He didn’t get the key factors of his position.
6. The author thought his newly position was challenging, because he needed to_____.
A. negotiate with other department directors
B. combine his ideas with other directors
C. compromise on the ideas
D. widely cooperate with others
7. How did the author feel after the bimonthly magazine came out
A. Annoyed. B. Confused. C. Satisfied. D. Inspired.
Passpage C
In the past, westerners were not familiar with Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM), but now it is becoming globally popular. According to a government report, TCM has been introduced into 183 countries and regions around the world.
However, westerners only have a little knowledge of TCM. Their understanding of TCM may be limited to acupuncture(针灸), cupping and massage(按摩). For instance, the purple, injury-like marks left on a U.S. famous swimmer’s back from cupping to relax his muscles and reduce pain became the centre of attention during the Rio Olympics in 2016.
In fact, Chinese herbs(药草) play a more important role in curing diseases and keeping the body in good condition in the TCM treatment system than physical treatment. Therefore, it is disappointing to know that although 103 World Health Organisation member countries have given approval to the practice of acupuncture, not many recognise Chinese herbal medicine. TCM is much less popular than Western medicine partly due to the slow development of Chinese herbs.
Herbs can be made into pills, powder and soup. The kind of herbs used, their quality, quantity and the processing together determine the effectiveness of the prescription(处方). Compared with Western medicine, which has standardised drug production processes and treatment methods, TCM lacks standardisation. The chemical composition and functions of its medicine are still unclear and their effects are unstable. Fortunately, standardisation has improved in recent decades and a number of factories are increasingly producing patented TCM drugs.
Another reason why TCM prescription drugs have developed slowly is that it lacks creativity. While Western medicine-making companies come up with new products every year, TCM drug producers tend to make medicine according to prescriptions handed down from the past. That Chinese chemist Tu Youyou won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her research into malaria(疟疾)treatment may drive creativity to some extent in China’s TCM industry.
However, Rome was not built in a day. The current situation cannot be changed within a short time.
8. What does the example of an American swimmer in Paragraph 2 show
A. Westerners know a little about TCM.
B. Cupping is a kind of important TCM treatment.
C. He was injured in his swimming.
D. TCM is very popular among westerners.
9. Why don’t some member countries of WHO recognise Chinese herbal medicine
A. Chinese herbs can get rid of diseases.
B. They only approve the practice of acupuncture.
C. Western medicine is more effective.
D. Medicine made out of Chinese herbs develops slowly.
10. How does the writer feel about the future of TCM
A. Anxious. B. Negative.
C. Optimistic. D. Disappointed.
11. What is the best title of the passage
A. The Effectiveness of TCM.
B. The Barriers to TCM’s Development.
C. The Weakness of TCM.
D. The Future of TCM.
Passpage D
Last summer, Steven Eaton received more than 200 young people on his organic farm. None of them said that they wanted to make money from farming. Some of them described it as a kind of protest against the idea that success means a big paycheck and many took it as a means to protect the environment.
Steven Eaton understands such idealists(理想主义者)and he was one of them about a decade ago. In 2010, he was in a law school in Washington, DC, but not enjoying it much. Then he applied to work on a farm in West Virginia in summer.
“I felt lost when I was in the city. It’s in the field that I found peace and harmony in my life,” recalls Eaton, who now runs an organic farm close to New York City. “So I went back to West Virginia after graduation.”
Farming—the independence and the connection to something as real as soil and food—was the one thing that he wanted to throw himself into. And he’s been doing it ever since.
But it wasn’t always a big happy folk dance.
“I had a lot of failures in the first couple of years and I didn’t really know what I was doing,” he laughs.
Eventually, he learned to be realistic about farming. “It’s good to be an idealist. But if you’re going to stick with it, and expect to make a living at it, you’ve got to be realistic about the business aspects: Money, managing money, borrowing money, and all the things that a business person has to do. You have to learn to like that and be willing to be good at that. That may even mean burning a little more fossil fuel, so you can get your produce to cities, where people pay higher prices.”
That sense of farming as a practical form of idealism is probably the biggest thing the young people have to learn. When you’re farming you have to put survival first.
12. Why did many of the young people want to become farmers
A. To make a lot of money. B. To apply their learning to practice.
C. To protect the environment. D. To study the pollution in agriculture.
13. Which of the following best describes Steven Eaton as a law student
A. Idealistic. B. Realistic. C. Selfless. D. Successful.
14. What message does Steven Eaton want to convey to the young people
A. Put environment before profit.
B. Be realistic about the business aspects.
C. Stick to your idealism forever.
D. Find a much easier job than farming.
15. What does the author think of Steven Eaton’s advice
A. Outdated. B. Useless. C. Funny. D. Valuable.

I went downstairs slowly and tried to walk into the kitchen. As I was walking towards the back door, mum asked without looking up from her dish-washing, “Where are you going ” I answered back without hesitation (毫不犹豫地), “I am going to the garden to play.” After I got out of the kitchen, I breathed in relief. My plan had worked so far! I climbed the fence and jumped onto the muddy field next to my house and started running towards the bus stop at full speed.
After half an hour I was at the beach seeking for my friends, Jimmy and Bobby. Two young men were racing in the canoes (独木舟). After a while, I saw them near a coconut tree. I ran towards them and got into my swimming trunk (游泳裤). For about an hour, we played volleyball happily.
Suddenly, Bobby hit the ball too hard and it fell into the sea. Just as Bobby was going to pick up the ball, the tide (潮水) came in and carried the ball further away from the shore, I was excited. However, just as I was going to get the ball, a very strong current ((海洋或江河的)水流) swept the ball further away from me. At that moment, a string of weed (海草) tangled (缠绕) up with my feet and I could not swim properly.

When you’re farming, you have to put survival first.
A. Outdated. B. Useless. C. Funny. D. Valuable.
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. B 15. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇议论文。作者认为年轻人在选择职业时可以有一定的理想主义成分。但是,在从事具体的工作时就得脚踏实地,知道妥协,不走极端。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“None of them said that they wanted to make money from farming. Some of them described it as a kind of protest against the idea that success means a big paycheck and many took it as a means to protect the environment.(他们中没有一个人说过他们想从务农中赚钱。他们中的一些人认为这是对成功意味着高薪的一种抗议,许多人认为这是一种保护环境的手段)”可知很多年轻人想成为农民是为了保护环境。故选C项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Steven Eaton understands such idealists and he was one of them about a decade ago.(史蒂文·伊顿(Steven Eaton)了解这些理想主义者,大约十年前他就是其中之一)”可知,Steven Eaton在法学院读书时也是一个理想主义者。故选A项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第七段“But if you’re going to stick with it, and expect to make a living at it, you’ve got to be realistic about the business aspects: Money, managing money, borrowing money, and all the things that a business person has to do. You have to learn to like that and be willing to be good at that. That may even mean burning a little more fossil fuel, so you can get your produce to cities, where people pay higher prices.(但如果你打算坚持下去,并期望以此为生,你就必须对商业方面的问题保持现实的态度:钱、理财、借钱,以及所有商业人士必须做的事情。你必须学会喜欢它,并愿意做好它。这甚至可能意味着燃烧更多的化石燃料,这样你就可以把你的产品送到城市,那里的人们支付更高的价格)”可知, Steven Eaton希望年轻人对农场的经营应该务实些。故选B项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“That sense of farming as a practical form of idealism is probably the biggest thing the young people have to learn. When you’re farming, you have to put survival first.(把农业当作一种理想主义的实际形式,这可能是年轻人必须学习的最重要的东西。当你种地的时候,你必须把生存放在第一位)”可推断,作者认为Steven Eaton的建议还是很接地气的而有价值的。故选D项。

“If mum finds out that I’m going to the beach, I’ll be in big trouble.” I said to myself softly in a low voice.
I struggled to keep afloat (漂浮的) but it was no use. “If I had listened to my parents, this would never have happened,” I thought silently.

【答案】Finally, after struggling for a minute or two, I still got pulled underwater. I told myself I should never give up. Then I pulled the weed again with great efforts. The weed finally broke. I swam back to the surface to take a deep breath. I saw two young men in the canoes, racing each other. I was exhausted and shouted for help. The two men saw me and raced towards me. By the time they reached me, I had been already unconscious.
When I woke up, I was in an empty room lying on a bed. It was not until a doctor came into the room that I realized that I was in the hospital. Jimmy and Bobby told me the two young men brought me to the shore and sent me to the hospital. After a few minutes, my parents with half angry and half worried faces walked in. My parents scolded me for running out of the house secretly but were also glad that I was not seriously injured. I will never forget that terrifying experience. Neither will I ever want to show off again.
