At around 4: 30 a. m., Daniel woke up suddenly, to a blood-curdling scream coming from his parents’ room. It was his mother, Mirian, who was unable to keep her composure due to the fact that her husband, Francisco, Daniel’s father, suddenly went into cardiac arrest(心搏停止)with no prior medical conditions.
As he lay unresponsive, with no pulse and appearing lifeless, Mirian, who was trained in CPR, knew that she had to act but was frozen in fear. “I kept yelling at the top of my lungs, ‘Daniel, your father, your father, he needs CPR, ’,” Mirian said. “I could barely dial 911 with my hands shaking so violently.”
It was young Daniel who kept his composure, softly telling his mother to calm down and “let’s just do this”. Within seconds he started performing CPR on his father.
For three to five minutes, Daniel cupped his hands and repeatedly did quick compressions while blowing into Francisco’s mouth until emergency personnel arrived on the scene with police.
But according to Daniel, he had zero training or remembrance of how he actually came to know how to do this other than from clips on TV that he saw from time to time.
“I can’t really recall any specific TV programs where I learned this and can’t even picture in my head how it went down, ’’he said. “All I know is that it was something I had to do to save my dad. ”
When Francisco finally arrived by ambulance to LYH-Cedar Crest, Patel began examining Francisco’s heart and found an abnormal heart muscle that most likely caused the cardiac arrest. He implanted a small device to Francisco’s chest so the heart could restart. Should it ever happen again He explained how important Daniel’s CPR was and his quick actions saved his father’s life. Patel added that up to 300, 000 cardiac arrest victims are treated annually with less than 10 percent of victims surviving. However, they can be reduced if we were all to learn CPR and acted like Daniel did.
4. What does the underlined word in the first paragraph mean
A. Duty. B. Calmness.
C. Fear. D. Advantage.
5. How did Mirian respond to her husband’s sudden cardiac arrest
A. She dialed 911 calmly.
B. She rushed to Daniel’s room to wake him up.
C. She knew nothing about CPR.
D. She shouted loudly to ask her son for help.
6. Which statement is true about Daniel
A. He picked up CPR from TV.
B. He received some training about CPR from his mother.
C. He would save more people like his father with CPR.
D. He was highly thought of by his doctor Patel for his quick actions.
7. According to Patel, what can be inferred
A. Francisco’s cardiac arrest wouldn’t happen again with the small device implanted.
B. Less than 30, 000 cardiac arrest victims are cured annually.
C. More people should learn CPR to make a difference in saving lives.
D. Francisco’s cardiac arrest was caused by an abnormal heart muscle.
C
The truest explanation of recycling involves taking a material, melting(融化) it down, and turning it back into itself over and over. This can be done with glass and metal, which can both be remelted and reformed into bottles or cans forever. This is a closed-loop(闭环) system, so it’s very desirable. On the other hand, some materials slowly degrade(降解) over time, meaning they can be reformed maybe once or twice, but after a while the chemical composition of the original substance has changed and it can no longer be turned back into what it once was. This is called downcycling(降级回收).
The downcycling of plastic is one of the serious issues surrounding this material. For example, plastic water or soda bottles are seldom turned back into bottles. The other is the fact that plastic never biodegrades(生物降解). Many materials newspaper included, will biodegrade at the end of their lives. When paper enters the environment, given exposure to the air, it breaks down, leaving the world undamaged. Plastic, on the other hand, photodegrades(光降解), and this is very concerning. As discussed earlier, in the process of photodegrading, wind, sun, and water break plastic down into smaller and smaller particles(颗粒) that will cause great damage to the ocean ecosystem.
Finally, there is concern about heating food in plastic containers. Avoid reheating food in plastic containers in the microwave, and stop covering food with plastic wrap. Storing cool food in plastic containers isn’t as big a concern, but avoid heating food and plastic together to eliminate the possibility of plastic into your food.
So the disadvantages to plastic are that it can’t really be recycled in the true meaning of the term, it will never disappear from our environment because it can’t biodegrade, and it is a vehicle to deliver dangerous chemicals into our food chains.
8. What is a satisfying recycling system
A. It’s easy to find alternative metals. B. Its process is an open-loop system.
C. Materials can be reused over and again. D. Composition of materials can be changed.
9. What is probably the major concern of photodegradation of plastics
A. The threat to oceans. B. The impact on foods.
C. The process of breaking down. D. The pollution of the atmosphere.
10. What does the underlined word “eliminate” mean in the third paragraph
A. Assess. B. Remove. C. Weight. D. Reduce.
11. What is the author’s attitude to using plastic in our life
A. Positive. B. Indifferent. C. Negative. D. Unclear.
D
It was about a year ago when a positive change in a community started.
I was in fifth grade, and at the time I wrote a paper about the migration of the monarch butterfly and received a perfect score. I was so happy. I called my grandmother, Nana, to tell her the exciting news. All of my talk about monarchs evoked memories from Nana’s childhood. “I remember when I was a girl out on the farm,” she said, “those black and orange butterflies were a common sight. But there do seem to be fewer monarchs fluttering (翩翩飞舞) around the neighborhood each summer. Perhaps we should try to find out where they’ve gone.”
Nana and I decided to investigate.
That weekend, Nana met me at the public library and we started our research. Our research produced plenty of information. The best information was this: it doesn’t take lots of money, equipment (设备), or government organizations to save the monarch butterflies; it takes only a little bit of land, and dedicated (专心致志的) people to create what’s called a Monarch Waystation. When I read this, an idea came to mind. “What if we set up our own Monarch Waystation ” I suggested.
“We will need several people to help us!” she replied.
The next week, Nana presented the idea to her garden club; I talked to my friends and neighbors. Nana’s garden club decided to plant a butterfly garden next to the city park. The library put together a display of gardening and butterfly books. The editor of the local newspaper wrote an informative article on how to make our community monarch-friendly. As spring turned into summer, those volunteers also worked to weed (除杂草) and care for the public gardens. We all waited and watched to see whether our plan would work—it did work! Over twenty black and orange butterflies were noticed visiting the Waystations. As summer progressed, the monarchs grew more plentiful.
It happened on a day when the sun was shining and the sky was a deep blue. As monarchs fluttered around us, people laughed and danced; Nana cried tears of happiness. It was truly a meaningful experience.
12. What does the underlined word “evoked” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Made up. B. Took away.
C. Showed off. D. Brought back.
13. What made Nana want to carry out research on the monarch butterfly
A. The author’s personal wish.
B. The beauty of the monarch butterfly.
C. The author’s good performance in school.
D. The drop in numbers of the monarch butterfly.
14. What can we know about the Monarch Waystation
A. It should be built in a park.
B. It can be created and used easily.
C. It needs continued support from the government.
D. It is the best way to protect the monarch butterfly.
15. How did the author’s monarch project impact the community
A. It caused the community to miss the past.
B. It organized the community around a purpose.
C. It taught the community to use the public library.
D. It informed the community about gardening practices.

I was in my 30s and my wife left me last month. I had no work and was on my way to the city center to find a job. I had no umbrellas, and I could not afford another one. I sat down in the streetcar and there against the seat was a beautiful silk umbrella with a silver handle.
I examined the handle and saw a name. The usual procedure would have been to turn in the umbrella to the conductor, but somehow I decided to take it with me and find the owner myself. Then I searched a telephone book for the name on the umbrella and found it. I called and a lady answered.
Yes, she said in surprise, that was her umbrella, which her parents, now dead, had given her for a birthday present. But she added, it had been stolen more than a year before. She was so excited that I forgot I was looking for a job and went directly to her small house. She took the umbrella, her eyes filled with tears. We talked for a while, and I must have given her my address. I didn't remember.
The next six months were tough. My last job ended the day before Christmas and my thirty-dollar rent was soon due, and I had only fifteen dollars. When I walked from the streetcar to my small apartment, the air was full of the sound of Christmas merriment. But there should be no Christmas for me. Unless a wonder happened, I would be homeless in January, foodless, jobless.
Peggy, my daughter, had proudly set our kitchen table for our evening meal and put pans out and three cans of food which would be our dinner. When I looked at those pans and cans, I felt broken-hearted. We would have only hamburgers for our Christmas dinner tomorrow. I stood in the cold little kitchen and the coldness in my heart was colder than ice.

1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

B 5. D 6. A 7. C
根据第二段第二句“...kept yelling at the top of my lungs, ‘Daniel, your father, your father, he needs CPR, ’...”
根据第五段“...he had zero training or remembrance of how he actually came to know how to do this other than from clips on TV that he saw from time to time. ”可知,Daniel是通过电视中的片段学到CPR的,并没有经过正规的培训。故选A。
根据最后一段最后一句“However, they can be reduced if we were all to learn CPR and acted like Daniel did.
C. Negative. D. Unclear.
C 9. A 10. B 11. C

根据第一段“The truest explanation of recycling involves taking a material, melting(融化) it down, and turning it back into itself over and over. This can be done with glass and metal, which can both be remelted and reformed into bottles or cans forever. This is a closed-loop(闭环) system, so it’s very desirable.”(对回收最真实的解释是取一种材料,把它熔化,然后反复地把它变回原来的样子。
根据第二段“Plastic, on the other hand, photodegrades(光降解), and this is very concerning. As discussed earlier, in the process of photodegrading, wind, sun, and water break plastic down into smaller and smaller particles(颗粒) that will cause great damage to the ocean ecosystem.”(另一方面,塑料光降解,是非常令人担忧的。 故选A项。
根据“Storing cool food in plastic containers isn’t as big a concern, but avoid heating food and plastic together to eliminate the possibility of plastic into your food.”(在塑料容器中储存冷的食物不是一个大问题,但避免将食物和塑料一起加热,以eliminate塑料进入你的食物的可能性)可知,避免将食物和塑料一起加热的目的是为了消除塑料进入你的食物的可能性。
根据最后一段“So the disadvantages to plastic are that it can’t really be recycled in the true meaning of the term, it will never disappear from our environment because it can’t biodegrade, and it is a vehicle to deliver dangerous chemicals into our food chains.”(所以塑料的缺点是,它不能真正的回收利用,它永远不能从我们的环境中消失,因为它不能生物降解,它是一个将危险的化学物质送入我们的食物链的载体)判断出,作者对在我们的生活中使用塑料是持否定态度的。故选C项。
The best information was this: it doesn’t take lots of money, equipment (设备), or government organizations to save the monarch butterflies; it takes only a little bit of land, and dedicated (专心致志) people to create what’s called a Monarch Waystation.
A The author’s personal wish.
D 13. D 14. B 15. B

根据第二段关键句“But there do seem to be fewer monarchs fluttering (翩翩飞舞) around the neighborhood each summer. Perhaps we should try to find out where they’ve gone.” 再结合第三段内容“Nana and I decided to investigate.”
根据第四段关键句“The best information was this: it doesn’t take lots of money, equipment (设备), or government organizations to save the monarch butterflies; it takes only a little bit of land, and dedicated (专心致志的) people to create what’s called a Monarch Waystation.” 再根据倒数第二段关键句“Over twenty black and orange butterflies were noticed visiting the Waystations.”
再结合最后一段关键句“As monarchs fluttered around us, people laughed and danced”可知,当帝王蝶在我们身边飞舞时,人们非常高兴。

故填that或者which。
故填 is located。
故填an。
故填in。
故填have puzzled。
故填and。
故填to present。

Dear Kenton,
I’ve received your letter. From your letter, I know that you are worried about your scores because you always make mistakes in exams. However, you should remember that even the best student can make mistakes sometimes, so don’t put too much pressure on yourself.
As far as I am concerned, learning from your mistakes in past exams is a quick way to stop making the same mistakes next time. To begin with, if there are questions that can’t be solved by yourself, you should turn to your teachers or classmates for help. What’s more, during the exams you’d better make a good plan to distribute your time according to the questions. Besides, try to leave a few minutes at the end to check your answers.
Enjoy the challenge that each new exam brings to you. I believe a good learning habit will finally help you gain success.
Best wishes!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

The doorbell suddenly rang and Peggy ran quickly to answer it, calling that it must be Santa Claus

Paragraph 2:
Our dinner that night was the most delicious I had ever eaten.

One possible version:
The doorbell suddenly rang and Peggy ran quickly to answer it, calling that it must be Santa Claus. Then I heard a man talking heartily to her, so I went to the door. He was a deliver man and his arms were full of parcels. “This is a mistake,” I said, but he read the name on the parcels and they were for me. When he had gone, I could only stare at the boxes. Peggy and I sat on the floor and opened them. A huge doll gloves. Candy. A beautiful leather purse. Incredible! I looked for the name of the sender. It was the lady.
Our dinner that night was the most delicious I had ever eaten. I forgot I had no money for the rent and only fifteen dollars in my purse and no job. My child and I ate and laughed together in happiness. We decorated the small Christmas tree with the gifts that we received. Then Peggy fell asleep. Looking at her, I felt a sweet peace flooding me. I had some hope again.
