Five hundred years ago, Europeans arrived on a new continent. They brought new cultures and languages to this place which they called America. However, there were already people living here who had their own cultures and languages,so a terrible part of history began.
As more Europeans arrived, there was a fight with the Native Americans for the land and by the end of the nineteenth century, the native tribes were moved to reservations. A lot of their children were taken away to boarding schools and taught to speak English. By the end of the twentieth century, more than half of Native Americans were living in cities. They gave up speaking their old tribal language and only used English. As a result, many Native American languages disappeared, and with them, their culture.
Some Native American languages are still used today, but they are usually spoken by the older members of the tribes who still live on the reservations. For most of the younger members of the tribe, the everyday language is English.
The good news is that some of these “last speakers” are keeping their culture and language alive. They are also receiving help from the National Geographic Society's Enduring Voices Project which aims to keep languages around the world from dying out.Linguists and experts meet with these"last speakers",interview them, and record video, pictures, and audio of them. The “last speakers" tell old stories which are written down in English so people can learn more about the culture.
Recording the language and culture is only part of the project. The next stage is to pass on the language to the next generation. Some children pick it up from their parents or grandparents, but many tribes now offer courses. The Salish tribe is an excellent example. They live on Montana's Flathead Reservation and their language is spoken by about 50people over the age of 75 and no one under 50. So the tribe has set up a school. It has 30 students aged two to twelve during the day and offers courses for adults in the evening. Schools and projects like these hopefully will save languages for the future.
24.Why did the author mention Europeans' arrival

B.To introduce Native languages' disappearance.
C.To state the native tribes' being moved away.
D.To explain a fight with the Native Americans.

B.They have a gap with the old.
C.They consider English popular.
D.They are forced to speak.
26.What's attitude of the author to keeping tribes' languages alive
A.Negative.
B.Objective.
C.Supportive.
D.Uninterested.
27.What directly drives the Salish school founded
A.The distance and poverty of their reservation.
B.The record of their language and culture.
C.The children and adults' strong desire.
D. The aging situation of “last speakers”.
C
Doing lots of exercise in older age can prevent the immune system from dropping and protect people against infections, scientists say. They followed 125 long-distance cyclists,20-year-olds.
Prof. Norman Lazarus, who took part in the research, said,"If exercise was a pill, everyone would be taking it. It has many benefits to the body.”
Janet Lord, a co-author of the research, said,“The immune system drops by about 2%-3% a year from our 20s,which is why older people are more susceptible(易受影响的)to infections.Because the cyclists have the immune systems of 20-year-olds rather than a 70-or 80-year-olds, it means they have added protection against all these diseases.” The researchers looked at markers in the blood for T-cells,which help the immune system respond to new infections. They found that the cyclists were producing the same level of T-cells as adults in their 20s,whereas a group of inactive older adults were producing very few.
The researchers believe that being physically active in old age will help people be better protected against infections such as flu.Steve Harridge, a professor of physiology, said, “Being sedentary(久坐不动的)goes against evolution because humans are designed to be physically active. You don't need to be a competitive athlete to get the benefits-or be a professional cyclist-anything which gets you moving will help.”
Harridge and Lazarus believe that highly physically active older people represent the perfect group to analyse the true effects of biological ageing. A separate paper in Aging Cell found that the cyclists did not lose muscle mass or strength, and did not see an increase in body fat, which are usually connected with aging.
28.Why did Lazarus say exercise was a pill
A.To show he is an expert.
B.To show he is a researcher.
C.To show the importance of pills.
D.To show the necessity of exercise.
29.What is wrong about the description of T-cells
A.They are the markers of blood.
B.They fight against infections.
C.They can help immune systems.
D.They are beneficial to our health.
30.Which of the following may Steve Harridge agree with
A.Evolution is easy to mislead many people.
B.Any kind of exercise is good for your health.
C.It's necessary to be a professional cyclist.
D.Athletes can be best protected against infections.
31.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.The exercise's effects on aging are doubtful.
B.Many cyclists are strong and have less muscle.
C.The older a man is, the easier he is to become fat.
D. Most older people aren't highly physically active.
D
New research suggests that climate change may have been responsible for the end of ancient Mayan civilization, which started in 1,500 BC.
According to findings published in the November issue of Science, scientists have found evidence to support the idea that a sudden and complete change in weather led to a long dry period. As a result of it,agricultural productivity(生产力)decreased rapidly, which finally caused the end of ancient Mayan civilization. Instead of being man-made,scientists think El Nino(厄尔尼诺)events led to the weather change.
The findings came after Professor Douglas Kenett led an international team including researchers from the US, Belize, Switzerland and Germany to study the stalagmites(石笋)in caves. Rain got into the caves and combined with the wet limestone, and finally the two formed stalagmites. Rain can give scientists some information as to how wet the area was at a particular point in history. Kennett's team focused on a single cave in the Belize jungles located near four Mayan sites. They pulled a 22-inch stalagmite from deep within the cave and used its chemical record to guide the way. They found that there were droughts(干旱)lasting many years between 900 and 1100.Those dates were the same periods of great suffering in Mayan history.
During dry periods there were wars-common for cultures struggling over resources and the changes of political rulers. The worst drought from 1020 to 1100 happened to be the accepted end of Mayan culture itself. But Kennett added that the greatest periods of rainfall“saw"that Mayan culture thrived from 450 to 660 and“saw”the founding of its greatest cities.
32. What is the main idea of the passage
A.Climate change is the main cause of the end of ancient Mayan civilization.
B.The decrease of cultural productivity caused the end of ancient Mayan civilization.
C.El Nino events led to the weather change.
D.Rain and limestone formed the stalagmites.
33.What formed the stalagmites in the caves
A.Earth and limestone.
B.Rain and limestone.
C.Earth and rain.
D.Rain and earth.
34. When did the ancient Mayan civilization end
A.Before 1,500 BC.
B.Between 450 and 660.
C.Between 660 and 900.
D.Between 1020 and 1100.
35.What does the underlined word “thrived” in the last paragraph mean
A.Gradually happened.
B. Slowly disappeared.
C. Stopped suddenly.
D. Developed fast.

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
John's family hired a driver. The driver's family came to stay with them in a small house in their backyard. That's how John met the driver's eight-year-old son Tom. From the day he met John, Tom became his fan. For Tom, 11-year-old John seemed to be a big boy. He would always follow John around.
Tom didn't go to school. He was admitted to a local government school, but he refused to go. He told John shyly that the teachers only made them copy words from the blackboard.Since he hadn't learned how to read, he could not understand anything that was written on the blackboard. John felt sorry for him. On Sunday, John saw Tom sitting under a tree holding an alphabet(字母表)book in his hands. John walked quietly towards him and discovered that Tom was holding the book upside down.
John took the book out of Tom's hands and turned the right side up. “This is how you should read,” he told Tom. Two big tears rolled down Tom's cheeks. Tom told John, “I want to be like you, but I can't do anything.” That evening, John told his parents they had to help Tom get into a better school. It was not easy to make Tom admitted to a new school, because the time for admission was over.
Luckily, one principal(校长) looked at Tom kindly and admitted him to her school. The next day Tom went to his new school wearing a new shirt. But when Tom returned from school,he was a bit sad. The other children in his class had laughed at him. He told John, “They all said I am much older than them but in a smaller class. I don't want to go to school.”

W:Hi! I know you were really worried about your first night. How did it go
M:You weren't there I thought you were coming with Peter.
W:No. Thursdays after school is Arts Club, and it finished really late yesterday.
M:Actually, it's probably a good thing you didn't come last night-so many things went wrong!
W:First nights are always like that! I remember when I was in a play in my second year. We all forgot our lines and one student was so nervous she couldn't continue with the play.
M:Surprisingly, I didn't forget my words, but Harry did.
W:So,what happened
M:Well, luckily I knew his lines too,so I told him very quietly. But that wasn't the only thing. Mark fell over a chair. It was supposed to be a sad bit! Oh, and you won't believe this-the lights all went off at the end of the play. It was so funny-we had to act in darkness. In fact, Fred turned off the wrong lights. Our teacher Mr. Tim was very angry!
W:I'm not surprised!

I am happy that you have decided to start learning French like me. When I come to visit you in London in the spring,we can talk together in French. Yesterday, I returned from my short holiday camping in Scotland. I went with my friend Melissa. She is from Paris. We camped near Edinburgh but the weather was terrible for the whole four days. Everything was so wet. But while we were there, we visited some village schools and an art museum.
On the last day we borrowed a boat and went out onto a lake. I am starting my new job tomorrow at the library near my house. How is your job at the supermarket Please tell me what you are doing this month. I am going to work out at the gym now!
