A: I like Michael Jordan better not only because he was a top score player in the NBA, but also a successful actor.
B. Me, too. I admire his athlete ability, motivation and confidence. Many people remember his famous number 23 shirt. Thanks to him, the Bulls won their NBA championship and the Dream Team won the gold medal at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain.
C. It is true Michael Jordan was the best known athlete in the world in the 1990s, but he was only the second player to score more than 3,000points in a season. The first was Wilt Chamberlain. I like Chamberlain better. He is the only NBA player who averaged over 50 points per game for an entire season. On 2nd March1962, he scored 100 points in a single game—no one has ever done that since!
D. I quite agree. What’ more, Chamberlain was so much better than all the other players that they changed the rules of the game to try to stop him.

We can understand the sentence like this: He also succeeded in the film Space Jam, in which the cartoon character Bugs Bunny is also very famous. Do you have any other questions?
Ss: No.
T: Ok, let’s come to the vocabulary exercises. You are given five minutes to do the exercises. Then you may check the answers with your group members.

T: Yesterday we learned something about two great players Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain. Who would like to say something about them?21*cnjy*com
S1: Michael Jordan was born on 17th February 1963. He is 1.98m tall. His position was Guard. He played in 1072 games. He scored 32,292 points. His records are as follows: 1. Most seasons leading score: 10. 2. Consecutive season leading score: 7 (1987-1993). His NBA career is 15 seasons. He finally retired from sport in 2003 at the age of 40. He opened his own steak restaurant after retiring from sport and acted in the film Space Jam. He is also successful as an actor. In a word he is awesome.
T: Quit good. What about Wilt Chamberlain?
S2: Wilt Chamberlain was born 21st August, 1936 and died on 12th, October, 1999. He was 2.17m tall. His position was Center. He played in 1015 games. He scored 31,419points. His records are as follows: 1. Most points in a season: 10. 2. Consecutive season leading score: 7(1960-1966). His NBA career is 14 seasons. He is the only NBA player who averaged over 50 points per game for an entire season. On 2nd March1962, he scored 100 points in a single game—no one has ever done that since! He was so much better than all the other players that they changed the rules of the game to try to stop him. He is the outstanding player of his generation.
T: Quite good! Both of them are super sport stars in the US. China also has such a star. Who is he?
Ss: Yao Ming.
T: As you know, Yao is playing in the Houston Rockets. Today we are going to learn something about what his coach says about him. Please turn your books to Page 9 and look through the questions in Activity 1 first.
Step II Reading
Ask students to answer the questions in Activity 1 after they look through the text.
Suggested answers:
1. No, he isn’t. On the contrary he thinks Yao Ming has great potential and will surely become a star if Yao is more aggressive.【
2. No. Chinese players are more polite and kind. They are not as aggressive as US players.21*cnjy*com2-1-c-n-j-ywww-2-1-cnjy-com
3. Yes, he does. If he wants to be a star, he has to be more aggressive.
After dealing with the questions in Activity 1, ask students to read the following article. Show the following on the PowerPoint or print the following materials out as handouts.
T: OK. After learning about the coach’s comments on Yao Ming, let’s learn what the others said about him. Please try to find the difference between Yao Ming and other players.
Yao Ming Message Board
What Yao Ming is teaching us is a lesson that the NBA and all who watch it should learn. We live in the age where rookies with even the slightest amount of talent thump their chests and cry out loudly for attention and shoe deals. Sadly, the game of basketball has turned into a game with players who worked together as a team to a group of players lead by one man. They hawk their one-man show in order to promote themselves over their teams, but Yao Ming is changing all that. Yao hops off the bench during a time-out to hand his teammates towels to wipe the sweat out of their eyes. You will rarely see him celebrate some feat he has accomplished, but he will be the first one to high-five one of his teammates, or pat them on the back whether or not they make the shot.
Yao Ming, as opposed to the other rookies in his class, is decidedly a team player. He is an exciting player to watch, but he's also an ambassador to his country. He brings his customs of honor and unity to our shores, and I am thankful we have him.
There are many wonderful aspects of the Chinese culture to be shared here in the United States. One only has to watch the Rockets play to see the best of China in this spirited, talented young man.

Aggressive, Yao! 4/19/2005 4:02:38 PM
Everything is where it needs to be, all you need is a bit of aggressiveness. You need to show the fire Yao, the desire that’s deeply imbedded on you, to contest every single ball, every single shot, ultimately to become the centre of the universe. Showing respect is civilized but to show the disrespectful to respect is not uncivilized. Go and get that Shaq by the scruff of his neck. Toss him like a rag doll, that Yao, believe me or not, is the only way you can be respected in the current.
39 amazing points! 8/17/2004 3:00:55 PM
Well, we knew it was only a minor hiccup in the game with Spain but you proved it right away! And even though the loss with Spain was hard to take, it was amazing to see you play with such zest and zeal! You threw down a guy alright. It would be even better if you knocked down the guys attempting a dunk on you. Because you know they mean no respect for you. Why give them a chance? And prevention is often better than cure! We’re right behind you and keep up the strong showing. Go Yao!
Discussion
Play a short video of a NBA game. Ask students to observe how Yao Ming played when he first joined Houston Rocket. Then show another to ask students to observe his recent play. Then ask students to work in pairs and discuss the questions in Activity 2. They may refer to both the text and the given materials. Five minutes later check the answers. It doesn’t matter if students have different opinions. The most important thing is to stimulate their interest in sports. By discussing the questions, they will learn to observe and learn to think.2-1-c-n-j-y21*cnjy*com
Suggested answers:
1. Yes, because in China people are trained to be selfless and kind. They are required to remember they are just part of the team. This will influence their way they play in court.www-2-1-cnjy-com21·世纪*教育网
2. In football games players are more aggressive.
3. I don’t think so. Boxing is very cruel. In boxing a player has to be very aggressive or he will be defeated. But if he is too aggressive, deaths may be caused.
4. Chinese sportsmen and women have to learn to be a little selfish and aggressive, if necessary, to be rude.【
Writing
Deal with Activity 3. Ask students to write a reply to an editor whose paper published the article about Yao Ming.【来源:21cnj*y.co*m】
T: Suppose the passage appears on Washington Post. Please write a reply to the editor and say what you think about the Chinese attitude to sport. You may discuss in groups first and then try to express your own opinion in the letter. You can refer to the direction in Activity 3. Make sure you use the expressions suggested in your letter.
A sample of the reply:
Dear Editor,
I’m writing in reply to the article about Yao Ming. The title of the article is Is Yao Ming Too Nice to Be a Star. I like the fact that the article draws attention to the difference between Chinese players and US players. Yes, it is true that Yao is not as aggressive as the US players. But he is a good team player with great skills. He is our Superstar. His humility as well as his skills has gained people’s respect. But playing in the US, he has to adapt to the ways US players play. Just as the coach said “he has to be more aggressive, and if necessary to be rude to his teammates.”
Now I would like to say something about how Chinese players are trained. In China players are taught to be “a man” first and then to be “a player.” That is they should learn to share, to love, to respect and also should keep in mind they are just part of the team. The team’s fame comes first. A very popular slogan in sports field is “Friendship first, competition second”. In my opinion, the reason why Yao is so kind and selfless is that he has been brought up and trained in this way. We Chinese also know the saying “When in Rome, do as Romans do”. I believe Yao will become more aggressive and play very well for Houston Rocket. Soon he will become the most valued player. With him, Houston Rocket will win their NBA championship. Good luck to them!
Yours sincerely
Wang Fei

Step I Lead-in
Ask some students to say something about Yao Ming. 21·
T: I know Yao Ming is your favourite star. Who’d like to say something about his recent games?
After some students report his latest games, show the following pictures on the PowerPoint.
T: Please look at the pictures. What happened to Yao? Please read the news report.

Scarface
One scary moment occurred at the 10:48 mark in the third quarter when Boston’s Brian Scalabrine drove down the middle of the lane and hit Yao in the face with his elbow, drawing a lot of blood next to Yao’s right eye. Yao quickly went to the locker room to get some stitches. If Scalabrine had landed his blow a couple of inches to the right, Yao might have had severe eye damage, but Yao will be okay. The ironic thing is that Yao was called for a foul on the play because he was standing inside the circle around the basket when Scalabrine made contact. Talk about adding insult to injury!
Step II Reading
T: From the above news, you have learned more about basketball. Now please discuss in groups and answer the questions in Activity 1 on Page 11.
Suggested answers:
I think it is a dangerous sport.
Yes, I broke my leg in the last school basketball match. / My classmate had a bleeding nose in a match.
There are possible personal injuries.
T: So we can see basketball can be dangerous. But Yao isn’t alone. Frank Sackler got injured too. And he still has the scar on his face. Now let’s learn how he got injured.

Careful reading
Let students read the passage carefully and then do Activity 4 on Page 12. Check the answers. 21教育网www.21-cn-jy.com
Discussion
Students are asked to work in groups and deal with Activity 5&6. Several minutes later, check the answers with the whole class. Show the suggested answers on the PowerPoint.
Suggested answers:
5.1. Basketball is one of the safest sports because the players’ energy is partly directed upwards, at a 90-degree angle to the ground, and over the heads of the others. So there’s less risk of a collision between two players.21*cnjy*com
5.2. Basketball can be dangerous because when there is an abrupt change of direction in their energy, from vertical to horizontal, there is a real danger of personal injury.
5.3. Joe’s a good basketball player despite the fact he was short and stout, with a large belly.
5.4. The referee thought Sackler was badly injured because he howled loudly in pain and fell with his nose bleeding and a cut on his left check and later he lay very still for a moment.
5.5. Sackler will always remember the match because he still has the scar on his face.
6.1. In my opinion, safety is more important. Winning isn’t everything. The audience cares more about players’ skills. No one likes bleeding. Or I think a fast basketball match is more important because the audience will be very excited to watch a very exciting game. The winners are the heroes on the court. Besides, the winners will be awarded prizes.
6.2. If the referee hadn’t interrupted the match, there wouldn’t have been a suspension of play. Without the suspension of play, Sackler would not have been injured.
6.3. Any answer can be acceptable.
6.4. To make rules to stop collisions between players.21*cnjy*comwww.21-cn-jy.com
Step III Writing
Ask students to discuss the details to make basketball safer. After the discussion students will be asked to write a passage describing what improvements they would suggest to make basketball a better game.
T: After discussing and answering the questions in Activity 6, now I’d like you to write a passage describing what improvements you would suggest to make basketball a better game.
A sample of suggestions:
Playing basketball is very popular, so I will offer a few suggestions to make this truly wonderful game even better:
Wear all required safety gear at every practice and game, including knee and elbow pads to protect against scrapes and bruises and mouth guards to prevent serious dental injuries.
Never allow players to hold, block, push, trip, or charge opponents.
Never allow players to play through pain.
Above all, keep basketball fun. Prevent physical and emotional injuries by creating an atmosphere of healthy competition and de-emphasizing a “winning-at-all-costs” attitude. Putting too much focus on winning can make players push too hard, ignore the signs of injury and risk injury by playing in pain.
To keep basketball interesting, fair, cooperative and fun, please remember the motto: “Basketball players of the world unite; you have nothing to lose but your coaches, your bosses and your landlords”.
Step IV Speaking and writing (workbook)
Ask students to talk about all the school sports clubs at their own school (list A). Then discuss and make another list (List B) to show which other sports clubs they would like the school to provide. Discuss which club will be the most popular. Then students will work in groups to write a poster for the club.
T: As you know, basketball is very popular in China. Nearly every school has a basketball club. Besides the basketball club, what other sports clubs does our school have? Please work in groups and make a list. Besides the sports clubs at our school, what other sports clubs would you like our school to have? Please make another list. A: How do you understand sportsmanship?
B: Good sportsmanship involves respect for fellow team members and members of the opposing team. A good sportsman always follows the rules and always congratulates the opponent after a game. I believe that youth sporting events, at all levels, should be a healthy, fun, and positive aspect of a young person’s life. Participation in sports should impart lifelong values, which are the behavioral foundation. We can learn strong moral values like honor, respect, and integrity from the sports.
Step IV Task

T: In this module we have learned a lot about basketball and some great players. Now please work in groups and discuss basketball and the great players. Then make a “dream team” of five great players, past and present.www.21-cn-jy.com
A possible “dream team”:
My “dream team” is made up of Yao Ming, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain and Rick Barry.
Yao Ming (1980- ) is the captain. He has more than size. He has every physical basketball skill and he always puts the team first.
Kobe Bryant (1978- ) scored 81 points -- second All-Time in NBA History -- against Toronto on Jan. 22, 2006. In his second season he was voted a starter for the 1998 All-Star Game, becoming at 19 the youngest All-Star in NBA history.
Michael Jordan (1993- ) was named the most valued player five times by the Chicago Bull. He was the top scorer in the NBA for seven consecutives (1987-1993). In 1987, he became only the second player to score more than 3,000 points in a season.
Wilt Chamberlain (1936-1999) was the first to score more than 3,000 points in a season. He is the only NBA player who averaged over 50 points per game for an entire season. On 2nd March 1962, he scored 100 points in a single game--- no one has ever done that since!
Rick Barry (1944- ) is the only player ever to lead the NCAA, NBA, and ABA in scoring. His name appears near the top of every all-time offensive list. He scored more than 25,000 points in his professional career and in four different seasons averaged more than 30 points. He was named to 12 All-Star teams, four All-NBA First Teams, and five All-ABA First Teams. Barry was a nearly unstoppable offensive juggernaut, a passionate competitor with an untempered desire to win.
I think my “dream team” will beat any team, for all my players are superstars and all of them can cooperate very well.

Consecutive seasons leading scorer.
To get general ideas1 What does the title “Michael Jordan–

I am writing in reply to the article about Yao Ming which appears in your newspaper yesterday. I like the fact that the article draws attention to that China is producing world class sportsmen and women like Yao Ming. However, I would like to say something about Yao Ming’s attitude. In my opinion, the reason why he is so “nice” is because that is what the situation was like when he played in China. In the Shanghai Sharks, the whole team played for him and he never had to ask for the ball-he dominate every game. I believe that Chinese sportsmen and
women are as good-and often better-than players from other countries, but we have a natural idea of politeness and team play rather than the individual “star” status which is typical of world basketball and soccer.
Yours sincerely,

Born with part of his left arm missing, Matthew Cowdrey has shown great strength and courage to succeed and reach unbelievable heights in the world of swimming.21·cn·jy·com21教育名师原创作品www.21-cn-jy.com 21*cnjy*com
Cowdrey started swimming at the age of five and was determined to not just be as good as any able-bodied person, but to be better.21*cnjy*com【
Cowdrey competed in the Paralympics (残奥会) in Athens for the first time and won three gold medals, two silver and two bronze (铜牌).2·1·c·n·j·y
He added another five golds and three silver in Beijing, breaking five world records.
After the 2012 London Games, he is the most successful Australian Paralympian, having won 13 Paralympic gold medals and 23 Paralympic medals in total.
Cowdrey’s mum, Vivienne, said she was proud of her son, who had forever been an overachiever.
“I don’t know how he does a lot of what he does,” she said.
“We were most disappointed when he chose swimming actually; we thought soccer or something like that would be more suitable.
“Then he chooses something which requires two arms.
“We always showed him how to do things and gave him ideas on how to do things. But we also let him try things for himself, because if he doesn’t do that and everybody does things for him, he’ll never learn.”
Cowdrey praised the upbringing his parents gave him, which taught him to be independent.2-1-c-n-j-y
Although he achieved great success, Cowdrey said he didn’t think about his achievements too much.
“I’ve always said that I just wanted to be remembered as someone who worked hard at what he did to reach his potential (潜力),” he said.
“A few of my goals are outside of Paralympic sport and are in able-bodied swimming.
“I’m not at the point now where I can even appreciate what I’ve done so far.
“It’s important to be modest, to be happy and to continue to work as hard as you can.” 21*cnjy*com

Proverbs are popularly defined as short expressions of popular wisdom. The wisdom is in the form of a general observation about the world or a bit of advice, sometimes more nearly an attitude toward a situation.21·世纪*教育网 21*cnjy*com
Proverbs are used by speakers for a variety of purposes. Sometimes they are used as a way of saying something gently. Other times, they are used to carry more weight in a discussion. Proverbs can also be used to simply make a conversation more lively. This example, often expressed as “The bigger they are, the harder they fall”, is as popular as it ever was.【出处:21教育名师】【来源:21·世纪·教育·网】
When a huge oak falls in the forest, it makes a powerful crash. When a small tree falls, you can hardly hear it as it hits the ground. When people use this saying, they mean that the larger or more powerful something is (it could be a person, a country, or something else), the bigger the shock it will feel when a setback (挫折) occurs.
Jim was the best basketball player on his team, and proud of it. He loved all the attention he got when people recognized him on the street and when kids on the bus asked for his autograph. He liked to walk proudly with his head high at school feeling important.
Then a new player joined the basketball team. He was faster and scored more points than Jim did. That made Jim so unhappy that he stopped going to basketball practice.
Finally his friend Peter talked to him. “Come on, Jim,” he said, “I know how you feel, but you’ve got to stop sulking. You’re a great player, and the team needs you.”
Jim sighed. “Yeah, you’re right, and I miss the team, too. I’ve really learned a lesson from this. I guess I really got a big head and, you know, the bigger they are, the harder they fall.”21cnjy.com

Wheelchair Basketball
Wheelchair basketball was invented in 1946 by former American basketball players, who, after wartime injury, wanted once again to experience the excitement of a highly athletic sport within a team environment. It is now played in more than 80 countries by over 25,000 men, women and children with a physical disability which prevents them from playing competitive basketball on their feet.

Over ten years ago, America’s National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) began to study creativity and aging. The NEA, the National Institutes of Health and four other programs launched (发起) the Creativity and Aging study. It examined the effect of participatory art programs on the physical and mental (精神上的) health of older individuals.2·1·c·n·j·y21·cn·jy·com
The study took place in three parts of the country, including Washington, DC. More than 100 older adults from the Washington area were taught to sing and perform together. 【
Jeanne Kelly directed the singing program. She says the study found that those working with her were happier than the inactive adults. The singers also took fewer medicines and visited the doctor less. And they had fewer falls because their bodies were strengthened.
What began as a study has grown into the Encore Creativity for Older Adults program. The program now has more than 550 participants. The average age is 73, but some of the individuals are 90 years old or older. www.21-cn-jy.com
“Some of our singers have sung their entire life. Some haven’t sung for 40 years, because they’ve been busy with a career, and they’ve been busy raising families. And then some have never sung,” Jeanne Kelly said.
There are now eleven choral (合唱队的) groups in the Washington area and one in Ohio. The eleven groups all study the same song, which makes it easy when a performance date nears. They can be combined into a larger group if the theater or concert hall is very large. After the concert season, Jeanne Kelly directs two summer programs in New York and Maryland. Singers have only four days to learn five songs before they perform in public.
82-year-old Jeanne Heather has attended the summer programs. She explains why she went.
“Because it’s fun and because I learn so many things. They teach us here, not only about the music, but how to sing, and how to sing better. And they don’t really get mad if you miss a note.”
The Creativity and Aging study may have ended years ago, but the choral groups that were studied have continued and expanded.

Do birds of a feather flock together? It certainly appears that they do. We are likely to hang around with individuals who are similar to ourselves. Poor people like to surround themselves with other poor people, and rich people with other rich people. Intelligent people associate with like minds, and artists typically seek out other artists.
It appears that we all have comfort zones we attempt to stay within. Very stressed and poor people don’t feel comfortable associating with rich people.
We owe (把……归功于) it to each other to be successful because success breeds more success. And if we aren’t feeling successful, looking at who we have as friends and associates can tell us and others a lot about ourselves and why. The longer we associate with a group of individuals, the more our thinking and feeling processes become like theirs.
A few years ago, a doctor friend of mine began associating with a new group of people. At the time, he had a successful practice and a positive and grateful attitude to life. However, within the first six months of his association with these individuals, his attitude and goals changed. He was angry at how things were and was dissatisfied with those who’d become his opposition. He became very stubborn. As a result, his practice dropped in quality of service. His facial expressions often showed anger and stress.21世纪教育网版权所有
After about two years of association with this group, he learned some valuable lessons. He realized that always focusing on problems or being dissatisfied with others doesn’t lead to a rewarding life, nor does it solve as many problems as it creates. He decided that he’d rather get back into serving his patients.
This doctor put his heart and soul into his practice, and his life changed. He began to attract people who focused on solutions instead of problems. His success was now more obvious than his stress — his achievement more obvious than his frustration.
Whom we hang out with does make a difference. The old saying “If you want to soar (翱翔) with the eagles, don’t flock with the turkeys” has a point.

LOS ANGELES — Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have studied the role airports play in spreading disease and pandemics They found that airports in New York, Los Angeles and Honolulu can spread disease more easily than others.2-1-c-n-j-y21*cnjy*com
Airports and planes move more than only people. They can also transport diseases such as flu and SARS.
Some airports in the United States are able to spread disease more quickly, according to researchers at MIT. They studied the volume of traffic (客流量), the amount of long-distance travel and connections (联运航班) from certain airports. New York’s JFK International Airport and LAX International Airport in Los Angeles ranked highest by those measurements.
Researcher Ruben Juanes was surprised that Honolulu’s smaller airport ranked third in its ability to spread a pandemic. In an interview, Juanes explains why.
“It’s in the middle of the ocean so actually every connection is a long-distance connection that can take away infected (受感染的) passengers very quickly over many thousands of kilometers. And even though the number of connections is small, a large number of them are centers of Asia or North America,” Juanes stated.
Thomas Valente, Professor of Preventive Medicine at the University of Southern California, says the study is a reminder that airports can spread pandemics more easily than other transport centers.【版权所有:21教育】
“Airports move people around and, when you’re at an airport, you have time to wait for a plane to leave or if you’re meeting somebody for it to land,” said Valente. “So there are lots of people sitting very near to each other waiting for things to happen.”
Sometimes a traveler catches a disease that came far from home.
“Not only will we see more pandemics but we are all globally at more risk from things that are happening in other places,” Valente added.
Jonathan Samet heads the Institute for Global Health at the University of Southern California. “Many infections are spread just simply by people touching the same surfaces that are dirty,” he said. “So on airplanes again bathrooms, doorknobs (门把手) are places where infections might spread.”
Health experts say frequent handwashing is one way to prevent travelers from developing illness when they’re on the plane or at the airport.
MIT’s Ruben Juanes says the study may help forecast how disease will spread when another disease occurs.
6. The researchers came to the conclusion that some airports spread disease more easily by _____.

D. collecting the general public’s opinions

It was September 5, 2009. Lexi Youngberg, then 16, was on vacation in Spring Lake, Michigan. She was riding on a small boat with her friends, Robby and Kaitlin, when a motorboat crashed into them. The sound was so loud that other boaters heard it over the roar (轰鸣声) of their engines. The teen boy who had been driving the motorboat stepped on the gas by mistake. Kaitlin, 23, had only small cuts, but Robby, 15, had been badly cut by the propeller (螺旋桨). And Lexi was floating facedown in the water. When one boater swam to Lexi, she was breathing. However, she was unconscious. She had a deep cut on her head. And the lower part of her left leg, just below the knee, was gone. Archery (箭术) is one of the oldest sports that are still being practiced today. The bow and arrow dates as far back as the Old Stone Age, and is the most widely used weapon in human history.www-2-1-cnjy-com21世纪教育网版权所有www.21-cn-jy.com21·cn·jy·com
While there is recorded evidence of archery competitions taking place in China more than 3,000 years ago, the modern sport of archery most likely originated in England during the 14th century. Then the sport began to develop fast and there were a few different styles of shooting, some of which developed into what we see today in the sport of archery.【版权所有:21教育】【来源:21·世纪·教育·网】www.21-cn-jy.com
There was clout shooting, in which arrows were held high into the air with the purpose of hitting a target which was laid flat, not vertical. The aim was to land the arrow as close to the target as possible. This variety of shooting is still practiced today, often with traditional bows.21世纪教育网版权所有21·世纪*教育网
“Roving marks”, another style, saw players shooting at a target, only to shoot at a new target from the location of the previous target. It is said that this is the oldest form of competitive archery, and was practiced by Henry VIII. Finally, there was butt (靶垛) shooting, in which butts held targets, which the players would shoot at. This is the ancestor of modern-day Olympic target shooting.www-2-1-cnjy-com
Archery was a part of the second Olympic Games, which was held in 1900. It was dropped after 1920, however, because rules varied too much between nations. Archery was brought back into the Olympics in 1972. This was after enough nations had formed archery governing bodies affiliated (隶属) with the Fédération Internationale de Tir l’Arc, which was founded in Paris in 1931, to standardize rules for international competitions.2-1-c-n-j-y

Animals might not be able to speak or master advanced language techniques, but they certainly have other ways of communicating. Whale song, wolf howls, frog cries — even the fast dance of the honeybee or the friendly waves of a dog’s tail — are among so many ways animals pass on information to each other and to other living things of the animal kingdom.21·cn·jy·com 21*cnjy*com
When it comes to hearing communication, not every member of a species is just alike. Animals in different places have often been sounding off in different dialects (方言). For example, one study shows that blue whales produce different types of sounds depending on where they are from. Some bird species are the same way. And what about those birds that live on the border between territories (领地) of different songbirds? They are often able to communicate in a way accepted by each of their groups of neighbors.【来源:21·世纪·教育·网】
Communication between different species can play important roles as well. One study shows that iguanas (鬣蜥蜴) do not communicate by making sound, but their well-developed ears help them hear well the warning calls of the flycatcher (a type of small bird). The two species have nothing in common except for the fact that they share a general habitat and enemies. So when an iguana hears a bird make a signal of danger for other birds, it probably knows to be watchful for arriving enemies, too.
However, as noise pollution has become a serious problem all across the globe, many animals are now under fire. Increased shipping traffic over the last century has greatly affected the spread of whale song around the ocean basin. Studies have found that songbirds, too, suffer from noisy city surroundings. Some species have had to change their singing styles, producing songs that sound louder, in order to be heard above the noise. Their new voices usually lead to stranger and somewhat worse styles of singing that female birds find decidedly less sexy.2·1·c·n·j·y21教育名师原创作品

I’m a senior 3 student. The college entrance exams are in the way and everyone around us is trying their best to help me. At school, all the teachers work very hardly, encouraging us to build up our confidence. Wherever we meet with difficulties, they are ready to come to our help. Meanwhile, our school also did a lot for us. For example, the library stays open up in the evenings and even on the weekend. At home, we are also taken well care of and our parents often tell us to have good rest. I’m very grateful to the efforts of our parents and teachers.
21·cn·jy·com
21cnjy.com
www.21-cn-jy.com

Wilt Chambetlain
