What was Frank's first job
Yesterday afternoon Frank Hawkins was telling me about his experiences as a young man. Before he retired, Frank was the head of a very large business company, but as a boy, he used to work in a small shop. It was his job to repair bicycles and at that time he used to work fourteen hours a day. He saved money for years and in 1958 he bought a small workshop of his own. In his twenties, Frank used to make spare parts for aeroplanes. At that time he had two helpers. In a few years, the small workshop had become a large factory which employed seven hundred and twenty-eight people. Frank smiled when he remembered his hard early years and the long road to success. He was still smiling when the door opened and his wife came in. She wanted him to repair their grandson's bicycle!

1. a.Before he retired, b.Frank was the head of a very large business company, c.but as a boy, he used to work in a small shop. 在退休前，弗兰克是一家非常大的商业公司的经理，但他小时候却在一家小铺里做工。
b句中的head在此指经理、头目、首领等。如：
Who is the head of your group
谁是你们组的头？
He is the head of the football team.
他是这个足球队的队长。
在c句as a boy中as表示当……的时候，相当于：as he was a boy.当他还是一个小孩的时候。
句中used to do sth.表示过去常常做的事情。而be used to do sth.表示被用来做某事。如：
The sunglasses are used to filter the light.
太阳镜用于滤光。
be used to doing sth.表示习惯于做某事。如：
I am used to living in this city.
我习惯住这个城市了。
2. It was his job to repair bicycles and at that time he used to work fourteen hours a day. 他那时的工作是修理自行车，并且通常一天工作14个小时。
这是一个由and连接的并列句。and前面的句子中，it是形式主语，真正的主语是后面的不定式to repair bicycles. 又如：
It is my responsibility to look after you.
照顾你是我的责任。
3. He saved money for years and in 1958 he bought a small workshop of his own. 他靠多年积蓄，于1958年买下了自己的一个小铺子。
这也是一个由and连接的并列句。and后面的句子中of one's own表示某人自己的。如：
You saved my life at the risk of your own.
你冒着生命危险救了我的命。
4. In his twenties Frank used to make spare parts for aeroplanes. 20多岁的时候，弗兰克曾生产飞机零部件。
in one's twenties在某人二十多岁的时候。当我们不想精确的说出某人的年龄时，我们可以用10的倍数的复数形式来表达这个年龄段。如：
In his forties, he began to learn English.
在他四十几岁时，他开始学英语。
5. In a few years the small workshop had become a large factory which employed seven hundred and twenty-eight people. 几年之后，小铺子已经发展成了一个雇有728人的大工厂。
这是一个定语从句，句子which employed seven hundred and twenty-eight people.是用来修饰和限定前面的factory的，怎么样的一个工厂呢？一个雇有728人的大工厂。
6. Frank smiled when he remembered his hard early years and the long road to success. 弗兰克回想着他早年的艰难经历和走过的漫长的成功之路时，他微笑了。
这是一个由when引导的时间状语从句。his hard early years中的hard在此表示艰辛的，苦难的。如：
What a hard life we had before liberation!
解放前的生活可真不好过啊！
