Activity 1: Getting to know two humourous writers
There exist different versions of it.
It is adapted from Lin Yutang’s novel.
Lin Yutang was a Chinese writer who could write both in Chinese and English.
What did they have in common

1 Humour has been an essential part of human behaviour for thousands of years. There is comedy in the texts of Ancient Greece, and medieval writings are filled with jokes. While these same jokes might not be as funny to us now as they were then, their authors understood that humour could not only entertain but also throw new light on sensitive or emotiveissues.

How did Lin show his quick wit in this paragraph
Lin was suddenly asked to give a speech by the president.
Lin told a story about a cruel Roman emperor trying to feed a man to wild animals.
This story made the audience roar with laughter.
Did these wild anamals succeed eating the man
They were told to make a speech after eating the man.
Actually, Lin didn’t want to give the speech, while he wanted to reject the request in a not embarrassing way,
so he made the story. With this little joke,Lin was able to make people laugh,while he was gently telling off the president.
He referred to himself as the animal and the president as the emperor indirectly to refuse the rude requirement.
This is Lin’s quick wit.
