Objectives

Speaking: a roleplay
Read the strategies with the class.
Ask students what features distinguish formal from informal language in Chinese and English.
Listen to the four dialogues and say which are formal and which are informal.
Task: imagine you are on an exchange visit to the UK. Have a conversation over dinner with one of the parents of your exchange partner. Make a polite conversation with your partner and act out.
Ask student change the roles when they finished and assess each other for politeness.
Writing: An formal letter
Read the letter and put the underlined words in the 6 categories.
Task: write a letter to an exchange partner, giving him/her advice about coming to your country.
Questions to think while writing:
Who are you going to write to?
What are you going to write?
How to arrange the paragraphs in the letter?
Any linking words in the letter?
Formal or informal?

Students work in pairs, matching the definitions with the slang words in blue in the song.
Play the song once for students to listen as they follow the gapped text.
Play it again for students to fill in the gaps.
