Chinese calligraphy(书法) is a traditional form of writing Chinese characters(汉字) from the Chinese language through the use of ink and a brush. As a tradition in China through centuries of practice, it can be seen on the walls of offices, shops, hotels, and houses everywhere. In English, “calligraphy” means “beautiful writing”. Picasso, the world-famous master of art, once expressed, “If I once lived in China, I must have become a calligrapher rather than a painter.”
The ink brush, ink, paper and inkstone are basic tools of Chinese calligraphy. Most people know these four
things together and give them a name of the Four Treasures of the Study.
If you want to write beautiful characters, you need to focus and calm down to have a peaceful mind. It is believed that calligraphers enjoy a long life because the practice is a good form of physical training.
In the past, people learned calligraphy for getting a chance to be officials or be famous. With the development of science and technology, through smartphones or computers in modern society, it is easy for us to choose the characters we want as long as we can remember how they are pronounced. So fewer people choose to write Chinese characters by hand, and even fewer people think it is necessary to practice Chinese calligraphy.
Do we really need to write Chinese characters by hand or practice Chinese calligraphy at all The answer is certain. On the one hand, you can learn handwriting to improve your understanding of Chinese characters, not because you need the handwriting itself. On the other hand,Chinese calligraphy is an important part of our traditional culture. As teenagers,we should play an active role in passing down our traditional culture.
