People speak English in different parts of the world. The same words can be used in different ways, depending on where you live. People can also have completely different ways of saying the same thing.
The Oxford English Dictionary(OED) is asking the public to help it add new words. Editors want to find the regional differences in English around the world. They want to expand its record of the language.
Last year, the OED, BBC Radio and the Forward Arts Foundation teamed up to find local words in the United Kingdom. It resulted in more than 100 regional words and phrases being added to the dictionary. One was "cuddy wifter", which means a left-handed person.
Now, the OED is widening its search to English speakers around the world. Eleanor Maier, an editor at OED. said the response has been great. Editors are listing a bunch of suggestions to include in the dictionary.
These include Hawaii's "hammajang", which means "in a disorderly state". Another is the word for a swimming costume, "dookers" or "duckers". It is used in Scotland.
The OED also might include the word "frog-drowner", which Americans might use to describe a downpour of rain. Another possibility is "brick". It means “very cold" to people in New Jersey and New York City.
The dictionary has already found that, depending on location, a picture hanging off center might be described as "agley". It might also be called "catawampous" or "ahoo".
"The OED aims to cover all types of English," Maier said. That includes scientific words, slang and regional language. Maier also said that it can be difficult for the OED's editors to identify regional words. The terms are more often spoken than written down.
The appeal is called Words Where You Are. It is looking for more suggestions. We were surprised and pleased by the number of regional words we were able to include," said Maier.
24. "Freezing" is closest in meaning to .
A.hammajang B.dookers C.brick D.ahoo
25. Which local word of the following is most likely from regions of the United Kingdom

A.It is challenging to create a complete collection of regional words.
B.People are not committed to responding to the appeal for regional words.
C.People use regional words only when they are home or with close friends.
D.Having an understanding of regional words can be helpful when communicating.
27. Which of the following can best summarize the main idea of the passage
A.It's time to trace the source of local words.
B.The same English words can be used to say different things.
C.Oxford Dictionary aims to enlarge its collection to appeal to locals.
D.Oxford Dictionary will include more regional words from around the globe.

Sometime in the early 1960s, a significant thing happened in Sydney, Australia. The city discovered its harbor(海港). Then, one after another, Sydney discovered lots of things that were just sort of there —broad parks, superb beaches, and a culturally diverse population. But it is the harbor that makes the city.
Andrew Reynolds, a cheerful man in his early 30s, pilots Sydney ferryboats for a living. I spent the whole morning shuttling back and forth across the harbor. After our third run Andrew shut down the engine, and we went our separate ways—he for a lunch break, I to explore the city.
“I’ll miss these old boats,” he said as we parted.
“How do you mean ” I asked.
“Oh, they’re replacing them with catamarans. Catamarans are faster, but they’re not so elegant, and they’re not fun to pilot. But that’s progress, I guess.”
Everywhere in Sydney these days, change and progress are the watchwords(口号),and traditions are increasingly rare. Shirley Fitzgerald, the city’s official historian, told me that in its rush to modernity in the 1970s, Sydney swept aside much of its past, including many of its finest buildings. “Sydney is confused about itself,” she said. “We can’t seem to make up our minds whether we want a modern city or a traditional one. It’s a conflict that we aren’t getting any better at resolving(解决).”
On the other hand, being young and old at the same time has its attractions. I considered this when I met a thoughtful young businessman named Anthony. “Many people say that we lack culture in this country,” he told me. “What people forget is that the Italians, when they came to Australia, brought 2000 years of their culture, the Greeks some 3000 years, and the Chinese more still. We’ve got a foundation built on ancient cultures but with a drive and dynamism of a young country. It’s a pretty hard combination to beat.”
He is right, but I can’t help wishing they would keep those old ferries.
28. What is the first paragraph mainly about
A. Sydney’s impressive buildings. B. The cultural diversity of Sydney.
C. The key to Sydney’s development. D. Sydney’s tourist attractions in the 1960s.
29. What can we learn about Andrew Reynolds
A. He goes to work by boat. B. He looks forward to a new life.
C. He pilots catamarans well. D. He is really into the old ferries.
30. What does Shirley Fitzgerald think of Sydney
A. It is losing its traditions. B. It should speed up its progress.
C. It should increase its population. D. It is becoming more international.
31. Which statement will the author probably agree with
A. A city can be young and old at the same time.
B. A city built on ancient cultures is livelier.
C. Modernity is usually achieved at the cost of elegance.
D. A balance should be found between the local and the foreign.

When I mentioned to some friends that we all have accents, most of them proudly replied, “Well, I speak perfect English/Chinese/etc.” But this kind of reply misses the point.
More often than not, what we mean when we say someone “has an accent” is that their accent is different from the local one, or that pronunciations are different from our own. But this definition of accents is limiting and could give rise to prejudice. Funnily enough, in terms of the language study, every person speaks with an accent. It is the regular differences in how we produce sounds that define our accents. Even if you don’t hear it yourself, you speak with some sort of accent. In this sense, it’s pointless to point out that someone “has an accent”. We all do!
Every person speaks a dialect(方言),too. In the field of language study, a dialect is a version of a language that is characterized by its variations of structure, phrases and words. For instance,” You got eat or not “(meaning “Have you eaten ”)is an acceptable and understood question in Singapore Oral English. The fact that this expression would cause a standard American English speaker to take pause doesn’t mean that Singapore Oral English is “wrong” or “ungrammatical”. The sentence is well-formed and clearly communicative, according to native Singapore English speakers’ solid system of grammar. Why should it be wrong just because it’s different
We need to move beyond a narrow conception of accents and dialects — for the benefit of everyone.
Language differences like these provide insights into people’s cultural experiences and backgrounds. In a global age, the way one speaks is a distinct part of one’s identity. Most people would be happy to talk about the cultures behind their speech. We’d learn more about the world we live in and make friends along the way.
32. What does the author think of his/ her friends’ response in paragraph 1
A.It reflects their self confidence. B.It reflects their language levels.
C.It misses the point of communication. D.It misses the real meaning of accents.
33. Why does the author use the example of Singapore Oral English
A.To justify the use of dialects. B.To show the diversity of dialects.
C.To correct a grammatical mistake. D.To highlight a traditional approach.
34. What does the author recommend us to do in the last paragraph
A.Learn to speak with your local dialect.
B.Seek for an official definition of accents.
C.Appreciate the value of accents and dialects.
D.Distinguish our local languages from others’.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards accent
A.favourable B.intolerant C.doubtful D.unclear

Fitness Magazine recently ran an article titled “Five Reasons to Thank Your Workout Partner.” One reason was: “You’ll actually show up if you know someone is waiting for you at the gym,” while another read: “ 36 ”With a workout partner, you will increase your training effort as there is a subtle(微妙) competition.
So, how do you find a workout partner
First of all, decide what you want from that person. 37 Or do you just want to be physically fit, able to move with strength and flexibility Think about the exercises you would like to do with your workout partner.
You might think about posting what you are looking for on social media, but it probably won’t result in a useful response. 38 If you plan on working out in a gym, that person must belong to the same gym.
My partner posted her request on the notice board of a local park. Her notice included what kind of training she wanted to do, how many days a week and how many hours she wanted to spend on each session, and her age. It also listed her favorite sports and activities, and provided her phone number. 39
You and your partner will probably have different skills. 40 Over time, both of you will benefit — your partner will be able to lift more weights and you will become more physically fit. The core(核心)of your relationship is that you will always be there to help each other.
A. Your first meeting may be a little awkward.
B. A workout partner usually needs to live close by.
C. You’ll work harder if you train with someone else.
D. Do you want to be a better athlete in your favorite sport
E. How can you write a good “seeking training partner” notice
F. Just accept your differences and learn to work with each other.
G. Any notice for a training partner should include such information.

I walked into a restaurant and sat down at a table. I picked up a menu, trying to decide what to eat. "Excuse me. Is your name Roger " asked someone, who touched me on the shoulder. I looked up and turned to the side to see a rather nice looking woman standing before me. “Yes. ” I replied, looking rather confused as I had never seen the woman before.
“My name is Barbara and my husband is Tony. He is from George High School. ” she said, pointing to a distant table near the door. I looked in the direction but I did not recognize the man who was sitting alone at the table, with a wheelchair (轮椅)around the corner.
“I'm really sorry. The name doesn't ring a bell. " I said.
She turned and walked back to her table. She and her husband immediately began talking and once in a while looked directly at me.
I sat there, thinking hard and tried to remember who this Tony guy was. "I must know him, " I thought to myself. "He recognizes me for some reason. " I picked up my coffee and took a sip. All of a sudden, it came to me like a flash lightning.
“Tony. THE BULLY (校园霸凌者). The bully of my seventh grade geography class. " I said to myself. I turned around and faced in his direction.
How many times that guy had made fun of my big ears in front of girls How many times he called me "four-eyed toad" How many times he pushed me up against the lockers just to make himself look like a big man to all the other students
He raised his hand and waved at me. I smiled, returned the wave and turned back and began to eat my breakfast.
“Goodness. He's so thin now. Not the big guy that I remembered, " I thought to myself.

Next on the program, we’re offering free tickets to go and see a film called A Year in Greenland. The film, which tells you all about the plants and animals in that wonderful country, has won a prize at the national film festival—it’s well worth seeing.
The film can only be seen at a new cinema that has just been completed inside the Science Museum in the city centre. It will be shown this Sunday every hour from midday onwards, with the last show at 5 o’clock, two hours before the museum closes. So there are six times to choose from.
So why not take the whole family to the museum this Sunday There are a lot of things to do. Children will want to head straight down to the basement where the computers are kept. I promise you they’ll come away with all sorts of exciting pictures they’ve created. Moving to the first floor, a working steam engine and a life sized model of a spaceship are among the favorite exhibits.
Entrance to the museum is free on Sundays, but it would normally cost 3.25 to go and see the film. To get your free tickets, you should e mail this program by midday on Friday. We’ve only got a limited number of tickets,so the earlier you e mail us, the more likely you are to get one. We’ll then get in touch with you before 12 o’clock by phone on Saturday if you’ve been successful.
So have a pencil and paper ready after this song.

66.Dear Mike,
Glad to receive your letter where you expressed interest in Chinese Senior High school life.
In the beginning, everything seems to be fresh and exciting. But I find it difficult to learn some subjects and have to cope with more pressure. Fortunately, my school offers various after-class activities. What interests me most are the elective courses from American TV Dramas Appreciation to Chinese Tea Culture. The future days will see me face up to challenges and make progress. I am sure my hard work will pay off.
How about your new semester Looking forward to your reply

All of a sudden I heard the sound of dishes breaking so I turned around to see what had happened. Tony had accidentally hit several plates and knocked them off the table. Tony and his wife looked very embarrassed. They apologized over and over again towards the waitress. They looked so helpless that I got up and went over. I helped his wife pick up the broken dishes from the ground. To my great surprise, I found from the waist down, Tony had no motor ability. His thin legs just hung there, lifeless.
