Are you carrying too much on your back at school? Lots of kids at the same age as you are.
Not only are students in China 1 from this problem, but kids in the United States are 2 fed up with (受……之苦) heavy school bags.
Experts are starting to 3 that more and more young students are having back and neck problems as a result of school bags 4 too heavy for them.
“It’s hard for mo to get up the 5 with my bag because it’s so heavy,” said Rich Hammond, 6 11-year-old student in the US.
Rich is among the students who have 7 backpacks with two straps (带子) to carry them, 8 a number of other students choose rolling backpacks.
But even with rolling backpacks, 9 up stairs and buses with them is 10 a problem for kids. Many at them have hurt their knees, backs or necks because of heavy school bags.
But how much is too 11 ? Experts say students should carry 12 more than 10 to 15 per cent of their own body weight.
Scott Bausch, a Wisconsin 13 doctor, said kids under 4th grade should 14 with 10 percent. But it’s also important that older kids don’t go 15 15 per cent, because their bones are still growing.
Bausch explained that there are other injuries caused by backpacks. “Kids are 16 their balance and falling down with these backpacks,” he said.
Parents and teachers are starting to tell the kids to only take 17 library books they will be reading that night. Some teachers are using worksheets (作业纸) or 18 workbooks for students to take home.

1.D。由后面的also fed up with (也饱受……
2.D。not only ... but also系习惯搭配。
12.A no more than意为“仅仅”。
II. 1-5 DDDCB 6—10 BCACB 11—15 CDAAD
III. 1. have 2. major 3. recent 4. advise 5. wonder

A friend of mine met with an accident driving in darkness. His legs were so hurt that he couldn’t move. It was 8 hours later that day broke, and then the 4 of the rescue.
It is almost 5 that he could stand the horror in the darkness for so long. Even more surprising was his 6 : “First of all l checked up my 7 conditions and found myself not in fatal danger. As there was no 8 to call for help, I leaned back in my seat trying my best to keep the wound from 9 . In this way I dozed off.”
His story put an end to my regret for the 10 of an exploration adventure that happened last year. A group of young men 11 to explore a mountain cave and got lost 12 to find a way out in the dark cave they were frightened and ran anxiously without a sense of 13 . Finally they fell dead in fear and exhaustion. According to the 14 people that found them, the place where they got lost was only about 10 meters away from the 15 of the cave. If they stayed on the spot when they lost their way and tried to 16 themselves, they would probably sense a faint light shining not far away.

The trees arrived by post, a half-open parcel. They were thin and straight, rather like arrows but with shiny leaves at one end and muddy roots at the other. Terry and his father took them down the garden and planted them in their prepared places. Terry bad great hopes of the middle tree, now set in the holy spot where Henry, his cat, run over, had been laid to rest a year before. The nine trees made an avenue down one side of the garden, where there was already a fifteen-foot stonewall between the garden and the back yards of the Jenkins Street houses.
“Why do we want a row of trees as well as a wall?” Terry asked his father.
His father said, “For privacy. These trees grow very thickly.”
His father’s love of privacy often puzzled Terry, who was not one to keep himself to himself, but he could see part of the point here. The houses in Jenkins Street were on higher ground. His friend Leslie lived in number twelve, and Leslie had only to stand on a box to see right over the wall.
“Will the trees grow higher than the wall?” Terry asked then.
“Oh yes, twice as high if not more. It’ll take a few years but they’ll grow.”
So they were going to have nine trees thirty feet tall, to keep them from being overlooked. Terry wondered why this was so desirable. He said, “Our garden is very pretty. Why can’t we let the people over the wall see it? That wouldn’t be showing off, would it?”
“No, I don’t think it would be,” his father said. “Yet some people might feel a bit less happy if they can always see a good thing that isn’t theirs. We don’t want to be the cause of any jealousy if we can help it.”
This consideration for other people’s feelings must be a grown-up thing. Terry thought. It was not his idea of how to run things. He said, “These trees it seems a lot of trouble to go to just to stop people being jealous of us.”
His father looked at him. “It isn’t much trouble, Terry,” he said. “These trees will grow without help from us. They’ll be beautiful. And listen to them. You can already hear them whispering to us in the wind.”
1. A How do we know that Terry’s father was expecting the trees?
A. He thought they would grow tall and thick.
B. He expected them because they arrived by post.
C. He and Terry had dug holes for them.
D. The parcel was half open, so he could see they were trees.
2. A We know from the passage that Terry’s father is a man who ___________.
A. was proud of his garden and liked showing it off
B. didn’t quite like his neighbors
C. preferred to keep his privacy
D. felt jealous of the people in Jenkins Street
3. A Why were the trees planted in front of the wall?
A. Because that was where they would grow faster.
B. To improve the appearance of the house.
C. To hide the ugly sight of Jenkins Street.
D. To stop people from looking inside.
4. B According to Terry’s father, the thing that might have made the neighbors feel less happy was_________.
A. the wall B. the thriving row of trees
C. the well - kept garden D. the privacy of

Should students make friends on line?
People hold different opinions on students’ making on-line friends.
Some people say yes. The internet helps make many friends. Chatting on line, students can more freely express their feelings and opinions, and even get help with their foreign language studies.
However, some people don’t think students should make friends on line. They say making friends on line is a waste of time, which should be spent more meaningfully on study. What’s worse, some students will even be cheated on line.
In my opinion, students should place their study, health and safety before other things. As for friendship, we can readily find it in our classmates and other people around us. (110 words)

Welcome to Ontario Parks, a new body set up to manage Ontario’s most treasured special places,, the parks in our area.
We are entering a very exciting year for Ontario Parks. Last season we asked some 15,000 visitors in 45 parks how we could improve our programs and services. We also looked at the thousands of comment cards we received. As a result, new comfort stations have been added, the number of campsites has been increased, and we’ve made other facility improvements. In addition, we’ll be providing more educational programs. This year, for example, more than 40 parks will offer special day and evening activities to excite your curiosity about nature and history.
Through the Internet, you’ll be happy to know that you can now explore all 270 parks on line. Let your family plan your park vacation, study a map of canoe routes, or find up-to-date information about programs, services and facilities.
So come and discover what Ontario Parks has to offer. Our parks are places to go with families and friends, for relaxation and fun, or simply to get away from it all. They are places where we can enrich our souls and “recharge our internal batteries”. They provide chances to explore nature, see wildlife, swim, canoe, camp, hike, picnic, ride a bike ...You’ll enjoy some of the best outdoor experiences available anywhere in the world.

Nowadays high school students hold different opinions about after-class activities.
Some think taking an active part in various school activities can broaden their horizon and enrich their knowledge. So they often have sports, make lots of friends mad so on.
However, others prefer to spend almost all their time on studies and seldom participate in school activities. They think it a waste of the valuable time at school.
In my opinion, as a student, our main task is to study and we should spend most of our time studying. At the same time, we should also take part in some after-class activities so as to learn what we can’t learn from books. What’s more, we can make lot of new friends and learn how to get along well with others. So I think such a school life is healthy and will be beneficial to our future studies and work.

Looking back on my childhood, I realize that naturalists are born and not made. Although we were all brought up in the same way, my brothers and sisters soon gave up their pressed flowers and insects. Unlike them, I had no ear for music and languages. I was not an early reader and I could not do mental arithmetic(算术).
Before World War I we spent our summer holidays in Hungary. I have only the unclear memory of the house we lived in, of my room and my toys. Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have clear memory of the dogs, the farm animals, the local birds, and above all, the insects.
I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world and my eagerness has led me into varied studies or research. I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil while reading about other people’s observations and discoveries. Then something happens that brings these observations together in my sensible mind. Suddenly you imagine you see the answer to the puzzling question, because it all seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and books, which some might honor with the title of scientific research.
But curiously, a sharp eye, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant worlds do not make a scientist. One of the best-known and important qualities required is self-training , a quality I lack (缺乏) . A scientist requires not only self-discipline but hard training, determination and a goal. A scientist, up to a point, can be made. A naturalist is born. If you can combine the two, you get the best of both.
60. The first paragraph tells us the author ________.
A. was interested in flowers and insects in his childhood
B. lost his hearing when he was a child
C. didn’t like his brothers and sisters
D. was born to a naturalist’s family

A. he didn’t live very long with them B. the family was extremely large
C. he was too young when he lived with them D. he was fully busy observing nature
62. It can be inferred from the passage that the author was ________.
A. a socialist as well as a naturalist B. a naturalist as well as a scientist
C. only a born naturalist D. first of all a scientist
63. The author says that he is a naturalist rather than a scientist probably because he thinks he__.
A. has a great deal of trouble doing mental arithmetic
B. lacks some of the qualities required of a scientist
C. just reads about other people’s observations and discoveries
D. comes up with answers in a most natural way
(C)
A “ blogger” is a person who writes on an Internet computer Web site called a “ blog”. The word “blog” is a short way of saying Web log or personal Web site. Anyone can start a blog, and they can write about anything they like.
There are millions of blogs on the Interact today. They provide news, information and ideas to many people who read them. They contain links to other Web sites. And they provide a place for people to write their ideas and react to the ideas of others .
A research company called Perseus has studied more than 3000 Web logs. It says that blogs are most popular with teenage girls. They use them to let their friends know what is happening in their lives .The study also says that more than 100,000 bloggers stopped taking art in the activity after a year.
However, some people develop serious blogs to present political and other ideas. For example, the Republican and Democratic parties in the southern state of Kentucky recently started their own blogs. And American companies are beginning to use blogs to advertise their products.
At the same time, some long-standing blogs have ended. Last week, blogging leader Dave Winer closed his free blog service, weblogs.com. He says the site became too costly to continue. He started the blog four years ago, and thousands of people had written on it. They are now upset because they did not know that the site was closing.
One blog that is still going strong is called Rebecca’s Pocket. Rebecca Blood created the Web site in 1999. She wrote about the history of blogs on the site. That article led to a book called “The Weblog Handbook”. It has been translated into four languages so far.
Ms Blood says Rebecca’s Pocket gets about 30,000 visitors a month. She writes about anything and everything—politics, culture and movies. She recently provided medical advice. And she wrote about how to prevent people from stealing money from on-line bank accounts.

Learning money management
When 12-year-old Hayley Flomen received a generous amount of cash for her birthday, she knew exactly what she wanted to buy: a pair of Lulu Lemon pants that her mom wouldn’t buy because they were too expensive.
“We went to the store together,” remembers Hayley’s mom, Andrea, “and she changed her mind. When it was her own money, she felt they were too expensive, after all.”
That story pretty much sums up why young teens should have some cash of their own — not for lunch or movies , but money to do with as they see fit. Because you don’t really understand what it means to pay $100 for a pair of pants, until it’s your $100.
“Kids get excited about receiving money because it gives them the opportunity to make their own purchasing decisions,” confirms Jeannie Stamkos, branch manager of the Yonge and Eglinton CIBC in Toronto. “Young teens have a heightened interest in money, which means there is a need for parents to educate them.”
A weekly or monthly allowance is a common way to give kids ongoing experience with handling money. But Stamkos has other suggestions:
Help them plan. “ If there’s a big-ticket item your child wants,” says Stamkos , “ help him figure out how long it will take to save for that , based on the allowance he’s being given and how much he can put aside each week.”
Help them earn. Point out opportunities kids might have to earn extra dollars, whether through odd jobs at home, babysitting or a paper route.

A. they didn’t have enough money B. the pants are expensive

A. If a teen has a strong interest in money, he is sure to be able to handle money
B. The writer agrees that children may earn money by doing housework
C. Children are excited to have their own money because they can make decisions on their own.
D. Allowance can be given to children weekly or monthly.
70. What does the underlined phrase “a big-ticket-item” mean?

Barbara was driving her six-year-old son, Benjamin, to his piano lesson. They were late, and Barbara was beginning to think she should have canceled it.
There was always so much to do , and Barbara, a night-duty nurse at the local hospital , had recently worked extra shifts (加班). She was tired. The sleet (雨夹雪) storm and icy roads added to her tension . Maybe she should turn the car around.
“Mom!” Ben cried, “Look!”
Just ahead a car had lost control on a patch of ice. As Barbara tapped the brakes, the other car spun wildly, rolled over, and then crashed sideways into a telephone pole.
Barbara pulled over, stopped her car and threw open the door. Thank goodness she was a nurse — she might be able to help these unfortunate passengers . Then she paused. What about Ben? She couldn’t take him with her—little boys shouldn’t see scenes like the one she anticipated. She asked Ben to stay in the car.
Two girls of high school age were in the car that crashed. One, on the passenger side, was dead. The driver, however, was still breathing.
Barbara quickly applied pressure to the wound in the teenager’s head while her practiced eye cataloged the other injuries ; a broken leg, maybe two , along with probable internal bleeding (内出血) . But if help came soon, the girl would live.
A trucker had pulled up and was calling for help on his mobile phone. Soon Barbara heard the ambulance sirens. A few moments later she surrendered her lonely post to rescue workers.
But as Barbara walked back to her car a feeling of sadness overwhelmed her, especially for the family of the girl who had died. Their lives would never be the same. Oh God, why do such things have to happen?
Slowly Barbara opened her car door. What should she tell Benjamin? He was staring at the crash site, his blue eyes huge.
“Mom,” he whispered, “did you see it?”
“See what, Honey?” she asked.
“The angel, Mom!” He came down from the sky while you were running to the car. And he opened the door, and he took that girl out.”
Barbara’s eyes filled with tears. “Which door, Ben?”
“The passenger side. He took the girl’s hand, and they floated up to Heaven together.”
“What about the driver?”
Ben shrugged, “I didn’t see anyone else.”
Later Barbara was able to meet the families of the victims. They expressed their gratitude for the help she had provided. Barbara was able to give them something more: Ben’s vision.
72. The reason that Barbara began to think about canceling her son’s piano lesson was that ____.
A. she was tired from work B. the road is icy
C. an accident had happened D. Both A and B
73. Barbara asked her son to stay in the car because _______.

Recently a school discussion has been organized about ads. As is well known, ads can be found everywhere.
According to the discussion, 60% of the students think ads have been playing an important role in daily life and can help them to make a better choice among many products of good quality. On the other hand, 30% sometimes accuse companies of misleading them by using ads. In fact, in order to get their message across, many truthful advertisers are working hard both to promote a product and to make people know about social problems and government policies.
In others’ opinion, only if we are careful with ads and learn to analyze them may we be able to protect ourselves from false ads and make good decisions. (108 words)

Text 10
With the development of science and technology, people have more spare time. But how do we spend the free time? I prefer to go outdoors and spend my free time in some different places
and with some different people.
The first reason for outdoor activities is that I have spent too much time indoors. Most of the time I sit in the classroom, listening to the teachers and doing my exercises. The outdoor activities are too limited. Fresh air, sunlight and enough physical exercises are needed for a healthy body. So when I am free, I should go out. The second reason is that I Want to have more experience in my life. When you go out, far away from your daily life, you will meet a lot of people who are quite different from you. It will give you a lot of exciting experience.
However, outdoor activities will take a lot of money and energy. So if you have not prepared enough, having some amusement indoors is also a good choice, which may be much cheaper and easier to carry out. Reading some books and enjoying music are also very good.

Increasingly, Americans are becoming their own doctors, by going online to diagnose their symptoms, order home health tests or medical devices, or even self-treat their illnesses with drugs from Internet pharmacies (药店). Some avoid doctors because of the high cost of medical care, especially if they lack health insurance. Or they may stay because they find it embarrassing to discuss their weight, alcohol consumption or couch potato habits. Patients may also fear what they might learn about their health, or they distrust physicians because of negative experiences in the past. But playing doctor can also be a deadly game.
Every day, more than six million Americans turn to the Internet for medical answers — and most of them aren’t nearly skeptical enough of what they find. A 2002 survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that 72 percent of those surveyed believe all or most of what they read on health websites. They shouldn’t. Look up “headache”, and the chances of finding reliable and complete information, free from a motivation for commercial gain, are only one in ten, reports an April 2005 Brown Medical School study. Of the 169 websites the researchers rated, only 16 scored as “high quality”. Recent studies found faulty facts about all sorts of other disorders, causing one research team to warn that a large amount of incomplete, inaccurate and even dangerous information exists on the Internet.
The problem is most people don’t know the safe way to surf the Web. “They use a search engine like Google, get 18 trillion choices and start clicking. But that’s risky, because almost anybody can put up a site that looks authoritative (权威的), so it’d hard to know if what you’re reading is reasonable or not,” says Dr. Sarah Bass from the National Cancer Institute.

A. are suffering from mental disorders B. turn to Internet pharmacies for help

A. find medical devices easy to operate B. prefer to be diagnosed online by doctors
C. are afraid to face the truth of their health D. are afraid to misuse their health insurance
3. B According to the study of Brown Medical School, ______________.
A. more than 6 million Americans distrust doctors
B. only 1/10 of medical websites aim to make a profit
C. about 1/10 of the websites surveyed are of high quality
D.72% of health websites offer incomplete and faulty facts
4. B Which of the following is the author’s main argument?
A. It’s cheap to self-treat your own illness.
B. It’s embarrassing to discuss your bad habits.
C. It’s reasonable to put up a medical website.
D. It’s dangerous to be your own doctor.

Grandparents who live far away from grandchildren are not always able to dote (溺爱) and praise the way they wish they could. However, in this information age, many grandparents and grandchildren are developing a close relationship even while living thousands of apart.
Christine Bowler, of Higley, had a brilliant idea to keep her mother informed of every one of 18-month-old Jake’s milestones. For Mother’s Day last year, for $10, Christine added here mom to their phone plan. They even threw in a free camera phone. Since they were "in network," they can talk, text, and send pictures as often as they like.
Now, if Jake is doing something uncontrolled, Christine takes a picture and sends it to her mom’s phone, then calls to talk about how much he is changing.
With parents in Canada, a cell phone is the main way Erin Porter, of Gilbert, keeps her daughter in touch with grandparents. But, she also loves showing Julie the gifts her grandparents have made, for example, paintings. Julie, who is almost 2, knows these gifts are from grandparents who love her, and Erin tells her about them as they use the gifts and look at photos of family members far away.
The Philippines sure seems like a long way away, but the LeSueurs of Gilbert have found a way to keep their grandparents close—they bought a Web-cam. This way her kids, Sage, 3, and Cason, 2, can see and talk, for free, to their grandparents. “It is so fun to watch them sing and dance, often in their favorite clothes, and know Granny and Daddy are getting to really see their personalities, even thousands of miles away,” Ashlee said.
When you first move away from family, keeping in touch and creating strong relationships may seem difficult, but with a little work and a lot of Jove, grandparents don’t feel so far away.

(A)
At dawn on January 17, 1995, the city of Kobe was rocked by earthquake tremors. The worst tremors reach 7.2 on the Richter scale. Kobe is Japan’s sixth largest city. It is also one of the world’s largest ports. Within minutes, Kobe was a disaster area.
How bad was the damage? The earthquake was the worst to hit Japan in 72 years. There were more than 6,000 people dead. More than 35,000 were injured, and nearly 310,000 were left homeless. Some 75,000 buildings were damaged or destroyed. Total damage was estimated at $90 billion.
Were the Japanese prepared for earthquakes? They thought they were. They were expecting a big earthquake to strike one of their major cities. But they did not know when, where, or how big the earthquake would be. Architects and engineers believed they had designed earthquake-proof buildings, transportation, and public services. Kobe’s few minutes of earth tremors shattered that belief.
What did people learn from the Kobe earthquake? What happened in Kobe suggests that earthquake hazard was not taken seriously enough. Some people believe that more can be done to reduce damage. They propose the following. More work should be put into quake-proof buildings. Walls should be built to protect towns on the coast from large waves. Providers of emergency services must be better trained and better prepared. Citizens must be better educated on what to do when an earthquake strikes.
The major barrier to doing more is cost. Japan finds itself trying balance the cost against the risk of a strong earthquake.
1. B Which sentence best tells what this passage says?
A. Cities can be made earthquake proof.
B. More can be done to reduce the damage of earthquake.
C. Earthquakes always cause serious damage.
D. Nothing can be done to reduce the damage of earthquake.
2. A How many people died in the Kobe earthquake?
A. More than 6,000. B. At least 100,000 C. Nearly 31,0000. D. 75,000.
3. A What is the major difficulty in doing more to reduce the earthquake damage?
A. People are not given enough training. B. Engineers do not have the knowledge.
C. Protection is too costly at present. D. No one takes earthquakes seriously.
4. B “Tremors” probably means “________”.
A. earthquake-proof buildings B. shaking movements
C. heavy thunderstorms D. natural disasters

3.D keep calm
4.C。“couldn’t feel worse”
排除A、C,因为A、C用的是过去时,而D项will be和后面的going to重复,故选B。

11.D。答句为“That sounds good.”

When the musical sound rings out, you immediately reach for your pocket ready to have a chat. But although you probably use it all the time, have you ever stopped to think about the manners related to talking on the phone? If you haven’t, here are some tips to guide you.
●Always give the person you are calling plenty of time to get to the phone before you hang up. If the person who answers is not the one you want, give your name and ask if you may speak to the person you want.
●Think about the time you call people. Try not to call too early in the morning (before about 9:00)or too late at night(after about 9:30). Also try not to call at mealtimes.
●If you go by plane to visit your relatives at Christmas, remember to follow airline instructions. Cell phones must be turned off as soon as the plane doors are closed and remain so until the doors open again on arrival.
●When face to face with someone, do not talk on the phone. It is rude to be on the phone when a waiter is trying to take your order in a restaurant, or when you are returning the shoes you have just been trying on in a shop. Finish any face-to-face business before taking a call. Continuing to use the phone while nodding to the person in front of you is quite impolite.
●When in a restaurant with your friends, keep phone conversations short. Make a call only if it is important, Practise speaking in a low voice. If no one looks your way, you’ve got it.
●If you go to a theatre, a concert or a cinema, consider the other people around you. Check that your phone is “off” before you enter. If you are expecting a very important call, put your phone on “vibrate” (振动)and run for the exit as soon as you feel it. If you forget both “off” and “vibrate” and your phone rings, don’t answer it, turn it off straight away.

I was working as a consultant (顾问) in a beer company. My work was to help the president and senior vice-presidents make and carry out their new strategic ideas. It was a big challenge, and I must work very hard. At the same time, my mother was in the final stages of cancer.
I worked during the day and drove 40 miles home to be with her every night. It was tiring and stressful, but it was what I wanted to do. My promise was to continue to do excellent consulting work during the days in the company, even though my evenings were very hard. I didn’t want to bother the president with my situation, but I felt that someone in the company needed to know what was going on if I could not leave my mother at home someday. So I told the vice-president of Human Resources the truth, and asked him not to share the information with anyone else in the company.
A few days later, the president called me into his office. I thought that he wanted to talk with me about one of the many issues we were working on those days. When I entered, he asked me to sit down. He faced me from across his desk, looked me in the eye, and said, “I hear that your mother is very ill.”
I was totally caught by surprise and burst into tears because I was really very tired. He just looked at me, let me cry, and then gently said a sentence that I would never forget, “Whatever you need, please let me know.”
That was it. I believe that what comes from the heart goes to the heart. The president’s understanding and his willingness to let me be in my pain and offer me everything are qualities of compassion (同情) that I have carried with me to this day and to the rest of my life.
1. A How did the president know that the writer’s mother was ill?
A. The writer told him the truth.
B. He heard it from the vice-president of Human Resources.
C. He read it in a newspaper.
D. He was just guessing at the reason for the writer’s tiredness.
2.B Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The writer was too tired to go on with her work.
B. The writer didn’t want anyone in her company to know her trouble.
C. The writer felt tired and stressed. She continued to do excellent consulting work, though.
D. The president let the writer go home to look after her mother all day long.
3. A What is the topic sentence in this passage?
A. I was working as a consultant in a beer company.
B. I told the vice - president of Human Resources the truth.
C. “I hear that your mother is very ill.”
D. “Whatever you need, please let me know.”
4. B The underlined words “in the final stages of cancer” in the first paragraph probably mean _________.
A. in the last period of her life because of cancer
B. acting as a patient with cancer
C. working in a theatre

Being considered a leader in our society is indeed of high praise. Leadership means power, commands respect and, most important, encourages achievement. Unlike vitamin C, leadership skills can’t be easily swallowed down. They must be carefully cultivated.
Different from popular belief, most good leaders are made, not born. They learn their skills in their everyday lives. But which do they develop? How do they (and how can you) get others to follow?
Always give credit. Many leaders note that the most efficient way to get a good performance from others is to treat them like heroes. Giving public credit to someone who has earned it is the best leadership technique in the world. It is also an act of generosity that’s never forgotten.
Giving credit is more effective than even the most constructive criticism, which often hurts rather than helps. Kenneth Blanchard, the author of The One-Minute Manager, agrees. “Catch people doing something right!” he says. Then tell everyone about it.
Take informed risks. “The best leaders know that taking a risk is not a thoughtless exercise,” says management adviser Marilyn Machlowitz. “Sky divers don’t go up in an airplane without checking the parachutes beforehand.”
Because the idea of risk also carries with it the possibility of failure, many of us usually wait for others to take charge. But if you want to be a leader, you must learn to fail-and not die a thousand deaths. Pick yourself up and start all over again.
Encourage enthusiasm. “When people understand the importance of work, they lend their mental strengths,” says Lee Ducat. But when they get excited about the work, all their energy gets poured into the job. That’s a great force! Is this the best way to create excitement? Be enthusiastic yourself — You will be followed by everyone.
5. B The underlined word “cultivated” (paragraph 1) roughly mean _____________.
A. encouraged B. compared C. examined D. developed
6. A The part “Always give credit” tells us that a leader should ______________.
A. give helpful criticism B. regard others as real heroes

Dear Editor,
I am writing to tell you my opinion about the problem that the children are leaving school at an early age.
In the countryside a lot of children are leaving school at an early age for various reasons. Some have to leave school because their families are too poor to pay for their education. Some find difficulties in study. Some have to help their parents to earn money. And some simply do not like studying. But the main reason that the children can not finish school is the poor living conditions of their families.
I think every child has the chance to receive education. As a student I can’t do much about it. but I would try my best and now, I would like to give them all my pocket money and hope it will help some children.
Yours,
Li Hua

Losing a parent can be particularly tough when it’s a daughter who has lost her mother, says Hope Edelman, author of Motherless Daughters: Legacy of Loss. A Harvard study found that girls who have lost their mothers have a harder time coping (应付) than any other parent—child combination.
“They are left feeling as if there is a huge hole in their world,” she says. “A surprising number of women who lost their mothers in adolescence (青春期) said it takes seven years to recover .... With women, it often catches up with them in their mid-20s, if they haven’t done any work.”
Raap was 34 when her mother died. Nine years later after her mother’s death, she felt forced to sit in front of a computer and begin writing the first in a series of letters. It was Christmastime, and Raap had been looking at her decorated tree, branches heavy with ornaments her mother had made. She started her letters simply: “Thank you for the ornaments and traditions, Mom. They make my Christmas special.”

eg. The book is said to have been translated into English.
5. A。 Because he was determined to…,第二空是A teacher is wanted的省略。
6. C。 A give in让步,投降,一般用作give in to sb.;B give out发出,放出,分配,用完,耗尽;C give away捐赠,无意中透露;D give up放弃,中止。
7. A。 所以选A。
15. A。 英语中常用could/should/ought to have done这一结构表示 “本可以做/本应该做而事实上没有做”。
III.
It was Christmastime, and Raap had been looking at her decorated tree, branches heavy with ornaments her mother had made.可知。
6.A。由文章第一段的 the US traditional way of adding “Junior” or “Ⅱ” after a boy’s name was too common可知。
