Recently, I had lunch with a young Chinese student who studies at a college in New York. He is very bright and ambitious and I enjoyed our conversation. Still, I felt upset and useless afterwards because I was not able to provide him with any good news. Graduating at the end of this year, he asked me how he could find a job in this country and fulfill his career dreams.
In recent years, students who found a job here after graduation have had to go through a cruel lottery system to obtain their H-1B working visa. And the success rates have been declining year after year because of the ever growing number of applicants. Last year, there were 233,000 applicants and only 30 percent of them were lucky, about half of the rate in 2013.
And it can only become worse. US former President Donald Trump’s immigration policies in this country have been tightening up and this trend will continue for at least the next few years. In this case, foreign students studying social sciences, a field in which starting salaries are rarely above the required amount, can kiss their visa hopes goodbye.
Compared to the older generation of Chinese students, today’s young people no longer consider the US as the only option. Many start to think China offers better opportunities in the longer term.
This is not to say that Chinese students in the US are not interested in job opportunities here any more. A few years of work experience in the US can give them advantages when they finally land back in their home country. But if the job opportunities are largely reduced by the tightening of immigration policy, I expect there will be a decline. And if that happens, it is the American economy that will suffer from the loss of those educated, hard-working and talented immigrants.
24.The author felt useless because ___.
A.he couldn’t find a job in the fierce job market.
B.he was less bright and ambitious than the Chinese young student.
C.he couldn’t win the cruel lottery.
D.he had to make the Chinese student realize it was difficult to find work there.
25.Which is not the reason why foreign students have difficulty finding jobs in the US
A.It is increasingly hard for them to get their H-1B working visa.
B.The number of applicants in the job market is ever growing.
C.Donald Trump’s immigration policies have been tightening up.
D.The starting salaries they require are higher than expected.
26.Supposing there were 250, 000 applicants in 2013, how many of them got their H-1B working visa
A.125, 000. B.75, 000. C.150. 000. D.200, 000.
27.What’s the writer’s attitude towards the tightening of immigration policy in the US
A.Indifferent. B.Concerned. C.Favorable. D.Objective.
C
Beautiful coral reefs (珊瑚礁) in Thai seas have been gradually worsening due to global warming that causes coral bleaching, in addition to certain human activities without proper control and environmental consciousness. Recently, researchers from Thai university Chulalongkom have created 3D-printed coral reefs modeled on the nature of real corals called Innovareef to accelerate the recovery of the coral reef ecosystem.
Innovareef corals are coated with calcium and phosphate nutrients (钙磷营养物) that corals need to thrive and consist of flat surfaces. The reefs’ holes serve as habitats and hiding places for many sea animals. Artificial reefs also make use of hydrodynamics technology to enhance their resistance to tidal forces and ensure that they stay in place. Finally, the PH (level of acidity) of the selected type of cement used for the reefs is close to that of seawater, and the design concept is that of Lego, easily assembled (组装) and disassembled blocks that are easy to transport and fix.
“The Innovareef is not too large. It’s light-weighted and can be carried by anyone thus saving transportation costs. You can simply put it at any desired location in the sea and then dive down to put all the units together to complete the Innovareef. Not even five minutes afterward, fish and several ocean creatures start to come in to survey and make it their new habitat, leading to biodiversity around the Innovareef. More importantly, the research data indicates that the settlement and growth rates of planula on the Innovareef are better than those on other artificial reefs,”said Associate Professor Dr. Nantarika Chansue at Chulalongkorn University.
Innovareef is the hope for the effective recovery of natural coral reefs. Now the team is focused on adding more details so that the new structures look more like natural reefs. For the future generations of Innovareef, the team will develop a more specific design for each sea species in the area.
28.What function is expected of the Innovareef
A.To extend the life of corals. B.To monitor the growth of corals.
C.To help restore natural coral reefs. D.To protect coral reefs from human destruction.
29.What do we know about the Innovareef from paragraph 2
A.It is highly resistant to heat. B.It has low manufacturing costs.
C.It provides rich nutrients for fish. D.It is portable and easy to assemble.
30.What are Dr. Nantarika Chansue’s words mainly about
A.The advantages of the Innovareef. B.The inspiration for the Innovareef.
C.The methods of improving ocean habitats. D.The importance of protecting biodiversity.
31.What will researchers probably do in the future
A.Apply the Innovareef on a large scale. B.Carry out more tests on the Innovareef.
C.Make a specific design of the Innovareef. D.Conduct further research on natural coral reefs
D
Most new runners assume that the best way to improve is simply to run greater and greater distances. While it’s true that going farther and faster will improve your running skills, most coaches and trainers will advise some level of strength training as well. Focusing on your core is a common suggestion. A recent study seems to back this up. In the Journal of Biomechanics, researchers investigated a symptom that has long confused runners from beginners to experienced ones. A good number of runners, 14 percent to be exact, experience gradual lower back pain. The results of the new study seem to suggest that weak deep core muscles might be to blame. When these muscles aren’t strong enough, the study found, muscles on other areas of the body kick in to keep the runner up-right, eventually leading to back pain.
To understand the role that these muscles play, the researchers had eight volunteers with minimal running experience run along an indoor track. High-speed cameras and 3D motion detectors analyzed which muscles moved, and how much. Once they created a working computer model for each runner, the scientists imitated what would happen if certain deep muscles were weaker, or shut off completely. As it turns out, when a person can’t use their deep core muscles very well, their bodies still want (and need) to maintain a good running form, and uses surface muscles to do so.
What’s wrong with that A muscle is a muscle, right Not exactly. While the surface muscles are often targeted in workouts - they give you a six-pack (六块腹肌), after all - they are pretty useless when it comes to supporting your spine (脊柱). The deeper core muscles, which essentially lie beneath and can’t be seen from the outside, do all the heavy spinal lifting.
It’s important to note that even when you’ve made these muscles super strong, you won’t likely notice visible results. But they will probably help you run better and definitely help prevent potential back pain. Perhaps throwing a nice long plank (平板支撑) may work.
32.Why do most new runners want to run farther and faster
A.Because they think it can improve running skills.
B.Because some coaches and trainers advise them to do so.
C.Because a recent study proves it to be helpful.
D.Because it’s a kind of useful strength training.
33.What does the new study show us when people do the running
A.14 percent of the runners have weak muscles.
B.The muscles on other areas lead to back pain.
C.Strong deep core muscles can prevent back pain.
D.The beginning runners usually have weak core muscles.
34.What happens when people do the running
A.A working computer model can be created.
B.Certain deep muscles become weaker.
C.They use both deep and surface muscles.
D.Deep core muscles probably function first.
35.What can we infer from the text
A.Doing a long plank can benefit the runners.
B.The spine is supported by the deep muscles.
C.Training the six-pack is useless.
D.Super strong muscles can’t be seen.

When talking to people about climate change, you might always get asked the question: What can you do to help as a consumer Here are some specific steps you can take:
Sign up for a green pricing program with your electric utility. Some utility companies allow homes and businesses to pay extra for power from clean sources. When you participate in these programs, you’re telling your utility company that you’re willing to pay more to address climate. 36 Without that demand signal, the innovations that governments and businesses invest in will stay in the shelf.
37 Depending on how much money and time you can spare, you can replace your incandescent light bulbs with LEDs, install a smart thermostat, insulate your windows, buy efficient appliances, or replace your heating and cooling system with a heat pump.
Buy an electric vehicle (EV). EVs have come a long way in terms of cost and performance. Although they might not be right for everyone, they’re becoming more affordable for many consumers. 38 People buy lots of them, companies will make lots of them.
39 . Veggie burgers haven’t always tasted great. However, the new generation of plant-based protein alternatives is better and closer to the taste and texture of meat than their predecessors. 40 . In addition, eating a meat substitute just once or twice a week will cut down on the e-missions you’re responsible for. The same goes for dairy products.
A.That’s cost-effective.
B.Try a plant-based burger.
C.Reduce your home’s emissions.
D.That’s an important market signal.

F.You can find them in many restaurants and grocery stores.
G.This is where consumers’ behavior can have a huge impact.

Knowing that you’re interested in Chinese food, I'd like to recommend you dumplings.
The factors for my recommendation are as follows. Considered as a Chinese cultural symbol, dumplings are a kind of traditional food loved by people almost everywhere China. Dumplings are easy to make and they are delicious. What usually goes inside dumplings is cabbage and pork or something else. Most importantly homemade dumplings are often associated with homesickness, as flavors and fillings vary from family to family.
I hope you can come to China to taste Chinese food some day.
Yours,

Many people who drink alcohol also like to smoke cigarettes. Drinking and smoking seem to be closely linked. But this may be more than just a mixing of two fairly common activities. New research has looked more closely at the relationship between cigarettes and alcohol. And the relationship is one of equal dependence. Smoking and drinking seem to feed on each other. Mahesh Thakkar, head of the research explains that when a person drinks alcohol they get sleepy. He says the drug, nicotine, in cigarettes fights that sleepy feeling. Thakkar’s earlier research shows that more than 85 percent of alcohol-dependent American adults also depend on nicotine. However, the new study shows a dependent relationship between alcohol and nicotine. The World Health Organization says 7 million people die every year from alcohol and nicotine use. Mahesh Thakkar and his team identified why alcohol use and smoking are often linked. He says this knowledge may help people break their addictions to alcohol and nicotine.

M: That’s great.

Welcome to our Video Programme! Is there anybody who impressed you a lot And is there anyone who you want to say thanks to Today, we’re going to share a story which happened to Susan last week.
One day, Susan and her friends had just finished their supper at a party when it began to rain heavily. As it became lighter, Susan decided to get her car by herself and go home then. Her car was parked two blocks away. But her friends recommended that she should not go alone, for she was having a baby in five months. One of her friends wanted to go with her, but she refused politely, because her friend needed to take care of her baby too. Then Susan walked away very carefully. When she arrived at the first crossroads, a taxi stopped and a passenger came out with an umbrella. Before Susan knew what was happening, he walked right beside her and told her that he would accompany her to where she would go. Susan refused politely, but the man insisted. During the walk, the stranger kept telling her to walk slowly.
When they finally got to the car park, Susan thanked him, and the man went away without leaving his name or address. What a touching experience! So, there is someone who is willing to help those in need. Best wishes to all of them!
