Captain Henry, a 98-year-old American retired fisherman, has become a first-time author, having written and published his autobiography (自传) In a Fisherman’s Language after learning to read at the age of 91.
Mr. Henry spent most of his life without even his closest family members knowing he was uneducated. Forced to quit school in the third grade to take odd jobs, he kept the secret close to his chest, only telling his late wife. Henry’s granddaughter, Marlisa, told reporters how he used tricks, like waiting for others to order at restaurants first, to avoid the issue.
A family argument in his 90s, she said, aroused his desire for education. “He signed a document he could not read about where he was going to live,” Marlisa said. Starting with his name, he eventually moved on to the ABC’s and children’s books. He had put them down since his wife fell ill. After the loss of his wife, he went back to reading and began to record his life. He wrote about his family’s voyage from Portugal to the US, how he went on to captain a boat, and his many journeys at sea.
His life stories have become so popular that nearly 800 copies were sold in the first two weeks after the book's publishing. One thousand more have been printed as requests for the book flood in from as far as Germany. And now even Hollywood producers have approached Mr. Henry about buying the copy rights to his life stories for a big screen adaptation (改编).
The family also now has a book agent and a deal in the works to publish a second edition. Meanwhile, the family members say they are reconnecting and closer than ever as a result of Henry's late-life efforts. “Everyone has a story,” Marlisa said. “It teaches that when you're down and out, never give up.”

D. Henry's book was well-received only by Americans.
26. How did Henry's family benefit from his writing
A. The family got more money from the second edition.
B. The family ties were rebuilt and strengthened.
C. His family moved from Portugal to the US.

27. What message can Henry's story give us

Twenty-five years ago, most young Britons wanted a career in law, to be a doctor, or, if they were creative enough, to take up singing. But today, things stand differently.
According to a survey by Tesco Mobile, a UK company, the “dream job” of young people aged between 16 and 25 in the UK is a video blogger, or “vlogger”. The survey, carried out among 1,002 people, found that as much as 40 percent of them put the vlogger as their number one choice on a list of ideal careers.
This change is undoubtedly as a result of the Internet and social media. They have made it so much easier to reach audience of the world, without having to enter a career in show business in the traditional way.
In the past, the biggest stars were trained by the Hollywood studios. Now, anyone with a camera can become a star. Vloggers are the big stars of today because they are normal people communicating with their fans about everyday lives.
However, what people see is only the bright side of being a vlogger and they fail to notice the fact that only those who are successful earn fame and money. For every success there are hundreds of others who never get off the starting line. There are the dreams that come true and the dreams that remain dreams forever.
Although being vloggers is popular, some young people choose to follow careers that don't necessarily earn them fame, but allow them to make good use of the Internet to share their hobbies. Young Israeli David Leshaw, for example, runs a business called the Finishers Club. It's an online platform for runners to keep a record of their races. His job allows him to express his enthusiasm, and is always a learning experience. And that's enough for him.
28. Why do more and more young Britons choose to be vloggers
A. Because vloggers can earn little fame and money on the Internet.
B. Because there is too much competition in the traditional show business.
C. Because the Internet makes it convenient to become vloggers.
D. Because anyone with a camera will surely become a star.
29. What can we infer from the fifth paragraph
A. Only a few vloggers can be successful.
B. A vlogger cannot earn fame or money.
C. People seldom see the bright side of being a vlogger.
D. Dreams will always remain to be dreams.
30. What do young people like David do on the Internet
A. Learn from others. B. Become an online hit.
C. Hold running races. D. Mix jobs with hobbies.
31. What is the passage mainly about
A. Most Britons choose to be vloggers as their jobs now.
B. The Internet is influencing young Britons’ career choice.
C. The Internet is taking the place of traditional studios.
D. Young Britons cannot find jobs without the Internet.
D
Languages have been coming and going for thousands of years, but in recent times there has been less coming and a lot more going. When the population of the world was still hunter-gatherers, small, closely connected groups developed their own patterns (模式) of speech independent of each other. Some language experts believe that 10,000 years ago, when the world had just five to ten million people, they spoke perhaps 12,000 languages between them.
Soon afterwards, many of those people started settling down to become farmers, and their languages too became more settled and fewer in number. In recent centuries, trade, industrialization, the development of the nation-state and the spread of universal compulsory education, especially globalization and better communications in the past few decades, all have caused many languages to disappear, and dominant languages such as English, Spanish and Chinese are increasingly taking over.
At present, the world has about 6,800 languages. The distribution (分布) of these languages is hugely unbalanced. The general rule is that mild zones have relatively few languages. Often spoken by many people while hot, wet zones have lots, often spoken by small numbers. Europe has only around 200 Languages: the Americas about 1,000, Africa 2,400; and Asia and the Pacific perhaps 3,200, of which Papua New Guinea alone accounts for well over 800. The median number(中位数) of speakers is a mere 6,000, which means that half the world’s languages are spoken by fewer people than that.
Already well over 400 of the total of 6,800 languages are close to extinction(消亡), with only a few elderly speakers left. Pick, at random, Busuu in Cameroon (eight remaining speakers), Chiapaneco in Mexico(150). Lipan Apache in the United States(two or three) or Wadjigu in Australia (one, with a question-mark): none of these seems to have much chance of survival.
32.What can we infer about languages in hunter-gatherer times
A.They developed very fast. B.They were large in number.
C.They were similar to each other. D.They were closely connected
33.Which of the following best explains "dominant" underlined in paragraph 2?
A.Complex. B.Advanced. C.Powerful. D.Modern.
34.How many languages are spoken by less than 6, 000 people at present
A.About 6,800 B. About 1,200. C.About 2,400 D.About 3,400
35.What is the main idea of the text
A.New languages will be created.
B.People’s lifestyles are reflected in languages.
C.Human development results in fewer languages.
D.Geography determines language evolution.
