Jan Tchamani was once an English teacher in Birmingham, UK. Years ago, she developed a serious illness and had to quit her job. At the age of 50, she found herself out of work and stuck at home with only her computer to keep her company. Feeling extremely bored, she turned on the computer, killing her time and trying to get herself out of the depress. Surprisingly, she discovered that surfing the Internet could help her feel less lonely and bored.
“I was absorbed by the Internet, where I listened to music, watched films, played games, and explored the whole world.” Joining an online group, Jan talked about her problems and got support and advice from others. The Internet enabled her to remove the distance existing between people. “How wonderful! I shouldn’t get stuck in the tough time but make a new life,” She thought, determined to make a change herself.
Inspired by the people she met online, she decided to set up an IT club to teach older people how to use computers and the Internet. She, together with her friends, organized events and collected money to pay for private teachers, helping many people in need. A 59-year-old man who learnt how to apply for work online eventually found a satisfying job. Not only could he take care of himself, but his daughter also had time to study at university. With the help of her club, a 61-year-old woman living alone started a small online company with two friends, which made her no longer feel lonely.
As Jan continued to run her IT club, it became so successful that she was receiving invitations to speak about its achievements across the country, appearing on television, radio and even in the House of Commons. Her club had expanded to other cities, and more people were benefiting from her efforts.
