I learned to carry my master on my back and pull a coach. I learned to wear reins(缰绳)and a bit in my mouth. I did not like them but all the horses had to wear them.
My master had two horses. One of them was Ginger. She was not friendly. She bit and kicked people.
Ginger and I pulled a coach together. The coachman's name was John. Ginger and I worked very hard. We became friends.
Ginger told me about her life when she was young. She told me ,“My master was not kind to me. My reins and bit hurt me. My master did not care.”
Squire Gordon and his men felt sorry for Ginger. They were always kind to her. She stopped biting and kicking people. She became a happy horse.
One day in autumn Squire Gordon went on a long journey. John went with him and I pulled the coach. The weather was rainy and windy. Mr Gordon and John could not see well in the rain. We came to a bridge. I stopped. “Something is wrong,” I thought. I did not want to go on to the bridge. Mr Gordon and John wanted me to go on to the bridge. I did not move. Just then a man saw us. “Stop!” he cried.
“What is it ” shouted the Squire.
“The bridge is broken in the middle. If you go on to it, you are all going to drown in the river.”
“Thank God!” said the Squire.
Then John said, “Black Beauty saved our lives. He knew the bridge was dangerous.”
When we returned home, Squire Gordon told his wife, “We are all safe, thanks to Black Beauty.”
That night, I was glad though I was very tired.

Have you ever heard an echo of your voice
An echo is a reflected(被反射的)sound. Stand in a very large, empty hall with nothing on the walls, and then shout. The sounds you make will hit the walls and come back to you. The walls reflect the sounds. These reflected sounds are called "echoes".
We can use the reflected sound to make sound travel farther. Hold a watch about fifty centimetres from your ear. You can not hear it. The sound of the watch travels a short way in all directions(方向). It does not travel as far as your ear. You can make it travel to your ear by using a roll of cardboard(纸板筒).
Make the roll of cardboard about fifty centimetres long, put one end over your ear and hold the watch at the other. Now you can hear the watch because the sound has not gone in all directions. It is reflected down the roll to your ear.
A megaphone(喇叭筒)works in the same way. It makes sound travel farther. It reflects the sound into a beam(波束)which can travel a long way. In the ship, the sailor uses the megaphone to make their voice travel farther. Without the megaphone, his voice cannot travel far.
We use the reflected sound in many ways. We use it to measure the depth of the sea. For example, among the animals, bats and whales(鲸)use the reflected sound to tell them where they are and what things are near them.
( )38. What is called“echo”?
Very loud voices.
B. Very loud voices that are made by man.
C. Very loud voices that are made by animals.

( )40. Which is the right order of hearing our echoes in a very large, empty hall
a. We hear the reflected sound. b. The sound comes back to us.
c. The sound hits the walls. d. We make a sound.
A. c-b-a-d B. c-a-b-d C. d-c-b-a D. d-b-c-a
( )41. From the text we learn that ____________________.
A. the reflected sound is useful only to blind(失明的)people
B. people haven't made use of the reflected sound yet
C. bats use the reflected sound to fly and get food
D. whales don't use the reflected sound as they live in the sea
D

According to a study published in Nature on June 23rd, astronomers(天文学家)have found that 1,715 stars have had a direct view of Earth since humans were here.
In order to do this, scientists used a method that looked for life on other planets. But instead, they changed the method so it could try to decide what places could see us.
The team looked at 331, 312 stars within 326 light years of Earth. Out of all those stars, only 1,715 of them could see Earth within the last 5,000 years, with an extra 319 stars that will be able to see us in the next 5, 000 years.
When I look up at the sky, it looks a little bit friendlier because it's like, maybe somebody is waving," said Lisa Kaltenegger, director of the Carl Sagan Institute at Cornell University, the US, and the study's lead writer.
If a planet circling around one of those 1,715 stars is home to advanced life, they could easily see that there is life here because of the oxygen on Earth. If that didn't give it away, then the radio waves we have sent out into space would also be an indicator. In fact, human-made radio waves have already travelled through 75 o the closest stars on Kaltenegger's list.
Why haven't we heard from anyone yet, then
It takes a long time for messages to travel between star systems. By the time a message could be received, that advanced life would probably not exist anymore.
Alan Boss, a scientist at the Carnegie Institution for Science n the US who wasn't part of the study, wrote in an email that this long time would limit the chances for different life to exchange
"emails and TikTok videos". "So we should not expect aliens toshow up anytime soon," Boss said.
( )42. How many stars will be able to see us in the next 5,000 years
A. 2,034. B. 1,715. C. 1,396. D. 319.
( )43. What does the underlined word "that" in Paragraph 6
refer to
A. Advanced life. B. The oxygen on Earth.
C. Human-made radio waves. D. A planet circling around one of those 1,715 stars.
( )44. What could prevent humans from exchanging messages with aliens according to Boss
A. Aliens don't exist.
B. They cannot understand each other.
C. Human-made radio waves cannot travel far.
D. It takes a long time for messages to travel.
( )45. What is the purpose of the text
A. To raise readers' interest in aliens.
B. To present new findings published in a study.
C. To discuss if there is advanced life on other stars.
D. To explain how messages travel between differentstar systems.
