第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
A
Philip was driving down the M6 motorway early one morning when he came across a serious road accident. A truck had crashed into a car, driving it off the motorway and into a roadside bank.
As the first person on the scene, Philip made sure it was safe to approach the vehicle and found an unconscious woman inside, with her airway blocked. As another driver approached, he shouted for them to call the emergency services.
Then Philip acted fast. He recalls: Climbing into the car, I immediately lifted the woman’s head and opened her airway, so she would be able to breathe. I then kept my hands on her head to keep her neck steady(稳定), as the crash could have caused spinal(脊骨的)injury.
Then the emergency services arrived, they asked me to stay inside the car and maintain the driver’s airway while they cut off the roof of the car. By the time the woman was freed from the vehicle, half an hour later, she was starting to regain consciousness.
Philip is convinced the incident demonstrates the importance of knowing basic first aid. He said: The simple first aid techniques I used can be learned in five minutes, yet they probably saved the driver’s life. Surely that’s a worthwhile way to spend five minutes.
Thousands of people are killed on UK roads every year and over half of road accident deaths occur before the emergency services arrive. It can take less than four minutes for a blocked airway to cause death, while it takes around eight minutes for emergency services to arrive.

24. If first aid is given properly when an accident happens, ______.
A. no people will be killed on the roads
B. it is unnecessary emergency services to come
C. it will take less time for emergency services to get to the spot
D. more lives will be saved

It’s important to teach your children proper pool and spa(温泉) behavior, and make sure that you take the right precautions(预防), too.
Kids shouldn’t run or push around the pool and should never dive in areas that are not marked for diving. If the weather turns bad, they should get out of the pool immediately. Let them know, too, that they should contact the lifeguard or an adult if there’s an emergency.
Above all, watch your children at all times. Don’t think that just because your child took swimming lessons or is using a flotation device that there is no drowning risk. If you’re at a party, it’s especially easy to become distracted, so designate(指派) an adult who will be responsible for watching the children.
Seconds count when it comes to water emergencies, so it’s a good idea to take a mobile phone with you when you are watching your children during water play. A quick-dial feature keyed to 911 or your local emergency center will also save additional seconds. If you receive a call while watching your children, make your conversation brief to keep from being distracted.
You should still be concerned about water safety, even after the swim season has passed. Pools with covers are not safe; many children attempt to walk on top of pools during the winter months and may get trapped underneath a pool cover. In addition, icy pools, ponds, and streams are tempting play areas for kids, so keep your pool gates locked and teach your child to stay away from water without an adult.
28. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To give children some advice on how to swim.
B. To remind parents to be careful when swimming.
C. To give parents some advice on water safety for children.
D. To teach parents what to do when there is an emergency.
29. The underlined sentence in this passage means _______.
A. there is no time to lose when there is a water emergency
B. you must count time when a water accident happens
C. time is the second importance when there is a water emergency
D. we should count the seconds when one is under water
30. You needn’t watch your children all the time _____.
A. if they have had swimming lessons
B. when they are using flotation device
C. if he is among a group of children
D. when a lifeguard is with them
31. Pools covered with ice are dangerous because _____.
A. children like to play on them
B. children are easy to fall on ice
C. the tops of pools are hard to break
D. ice may break and children may get trapped under it
D
When a store sells goods or services at a cost lower than usual, it is called a sale. Sales last for a limited time. Then the cost is returned to its usual amount.
There are many kinds of sales. For example, a “back-to-school sale” is held near the beginning of the school year. Parents like the lower prices of the clothes and school supplies for their children.
A “midnight madness” event starts very late at night. An “early bird special” sale starts very early in the morning. This kind of sale is popular the day after Thanksgiving in November.
A favorite sale among many people is the “buy one, get one free” sale. You buy one thing and get a second one without cost. When people see the word “free” in an advertisement they know they are getting a good deal. As a matter of fact, it is not the case.
Another kind of sale is a “going out of business” sale. This is when a storeowner tries to sell all the goods in the store before closing the business permanently(永久地).
Let us say the store sells floor coverings. The owner lowers the prices and puts up a sign that says: “Going out of business sale. All items MUST be sold by tomorrow.”
People who buy the floor coverings think they are getting a special deal because everything must be sold in a short period of time. Then, days later they see the store did not close permanently. And they see the same sign that claims the store is going out of business. Some business owners really do not end the business. They just want to earn more money.
People also hold their own sales. They hold garage sales and yard sales outside their home. They sell things they no longer want. Groups such as religious centers or schools hold bake sales. They sell cakes, cookies and other baked goods to raise money.
In America, you can always find a good sale, no matter the day or time of year. There is the Independence Day sale, Veteran’s Day sale, clearance sale, sidewalk sale, red tag sale, white sale, blue light special, liquidation sale, half-off sale, warehouse sale, tent sale ...
32. What does the passage mainly deal with?
A. How to save money in shopping.
B. Different kinds of sales.
C. Shoppers’ ways to earn money.
D. Reasons for the popularity of sales.
33. What do we call the sale if it starts before the sun rises?
A. A “back-to-school sale”.
B. A “midnight madness” event.
C. An “early bird special” sale.
D. A “buy one, get one free” sale.
34. Why do parents like a “back-to-school sale”?
A. Because it has a variety of school supplies.
B. Because it is held at the beginning of the school year.
C. Because it provides plenty school uniforms.
D. Because they can save money.
35. What’s the purpose of some owners who do “going out of business” sale repeatedly?
A. They want to close the business permanently.
B. They want to give special offers to customers.
C. They want to sell all their goods in a short period of time.
D. They want to cheat the customers into buying their goods.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分l0分)
One way for parents in the United States to start saving for college when their child is still very young is called a 529 plan. The plans are named for the part of the federal tax law that created them in 1996. 36
Private investment companies operate most of these plans, and each state has its own rules. 37
Five twenty-nine plans offer different investment choices. Families must decide how aggressively they want to put money into stocks, bonds or other investments that can rise or fall in value. 38
39 Parents can pay for an education at a public college or university in their state while their child is still growing up. But what if the child decides to go to school out of state, or not at all? The money can go to educate another family member, or the parents can withdraw it and pay taxes on the gains.
40 One way is to put money for a child into what is called a custodial account until the child becomes an adult.
A. There are other ways to save for college while also saving on taxes.
B. They should make many useful plans for children.
C. Many plans are open to families from other states.
D. There are limits on how much families can put into 529 plans.
E. All 50 states and the District of Columbia offer them.
F. Parents have no choice but to educate their children themselves.
G. Another choice is called a prepaid tuition plan.
