Presentation (展示) skills are important at school and in other areas of life. Some people don’t like giving presentations because they don’t know what to say or because they get nervous about public speaking. Here’s some advice to help you make presentations easier and more enjoyable.
1. Get organized
The best presentations are well planned and clearly organized. Think about topics (话题) and choose a proper one. In one topic, three or four main ideas will be fine. The beginning of your presentation should be interesting. For example, you can tell a short, funny story to make people laugh.
2. Use photos or videos
Try to use photos or videos. These things make your performance more exciting and help you remember what you’re going to say. However, you shouldn’t use too many. The “star” of your presentation should be you, not your photos or videos.
3. Practice before your performance
You need to practice many times before the “big day”. Practice saying any unusual words. Then write the main ideas on small cards to help you remember. Practice in front of a mirror and time your presentation. Finally you can record your performance or ask a friend to watch you and then make suggestions for improvements.
4. Connect with your audience (观众)
Always look at the audience when you speak. Stand up straight, but don’t stand still or move around much. Finally, be sure to thank your audience when you finish speaking. It’s a simple but good way to end any presentation.
44 How can you interest your listeners at the beginning
A. By listing your ideas. B. By telling a funny story. C. By saying simple words.
45. Which is the “big day” according to the text
A. The day you get some advice.
B. The day you visit your friends.
C. The day you make a presentation.
46. What is the good way to end your presentation
A. To show thanks. B. To make suggestions. C. To share main ideas.
47. What is the writer’s writing purpose
A. To help us understand ideas.
B. To invite us to attend a course.
C. To teach us presentation skills.

I looked at my blank page. All I’d written was the title “What I Want to Be When I Grow Up”. The rest of the class were all busy writing.
“You have five minutes to finish.” Ms Clark announced.
“I want to be a teacher when I grow up because…” I just wrote a few lines when the bell went. My friend Lisa told me she wanted to be an astronaut. I laughed as I pictured Lisa floating in space. After school I told my grandpa my real dream. “You promise not to laugh. I didn’t write it on the school paper.” I said, “I want to be an actress.” He didn’t laugh. Instead he asked, “Why ”
“I just do, that’s all, more than anything in the world. I’d be really good.”
“OK. Angela, I once dreamed to be a reporter. We’d better find out if you’ve got any talent then, hadn’t we ” He looked up a number in his phone. “You need drama lessons, and I know just the right person—Jane Rozzi, a friend of mine.” Fantastic! I couldn’t believe my luck. I gave him a big hug.
“I’d better check with your Mum and Dad first to make sure they don’t mind their daughter taking Jane Rozzi’s acting class.”
No problem there. Next evening, sitting in my grandpa’s car, my stomach felt tight and my mouth was dry. He was driving me to my first acting lesson. “She is kind and gentle. Don’t be nervous.”
He was right. I liked Jane immediately. She told me I was talented and my voice was good. Just needed to get louder. After that we did some breathing and voice exercises. I practised day after day…
“You have a natural talent and, with hard work and luck, you will make it.” I always bear Jane’s words in my mind. Now I am an actress on the stage.
Wow! How my life has changed since I first stared at that blank piece of paper!

Familiar songs work well, too. You may need to test to make your own playlists. If you are not sure how many beats a song has in a minute, you can find out by entering its title into . And remember to get volume (音量) right. Make sure that the final piece is gradually slowing down. Or you may be woken up by the sudden silence.

Prepare yourself
Get to know the school. This may sound like effort, but visiting the school website might give you a good understanding on how life at your new school is, and whether or not it is similar to life at your old school.
Change your appearance (外表) a little. Try getting a new haircut or outfit (套装). Take the chance of starting a new school to keep the things that you love, and throw away the things that you dislike.

Get Involved (参与)
Join a club or sports team. Being on a sports team or the star in the music play is considered “cool”. If you’re in high school, these activities look great on a college application (申请).

Learning to Manage Our Own Lives
These days, we Chinese teenagers often depend on our parents in our daily lives. we can’t deal with difficulties by ourselves. So it’s important for us to learn to manage our own lives.
I think our parents should believe in us and never do everything for us. Sometimes it’s OK to give us proper advice and they should allow us to make our own decisions. Also, I think parents should encourage us to face the problems bravely and try to solve them.
For me, I seldom did housework in the past, because I thought it is our parents’ work. This is a wrong opinion. We should learn to do housework like sweeping the floor and taking out the rubbish. I hardly cooked either. When my mother was on business, I realized I must learn to cook by myself. After that, I find that cooking is not as difficult as it seems.
In short, the earlier we manage our own lives, the better it is for our future.
