In 1972, Richard Sears, a young American began learning Chinese because of his interest in traditional Chinese culture. He went to China to study Chinese in the 1990s.
In 1994, Richard Sears decided to put the ancient Chinese characters online. Then, in 2002, he did it. That is the beginning of the Chinese Etymology(汉字字源)website. "My website did not get much attention for the next few years. Until one day in 2011, it suddenly got a lot of attention. I got a few thousand emails, and a few million visitors and people started calling me 'Uncle Hanzi'," Sears said with a smile. Hanzi means Chinese characters. He has put more than 96,000 ancient Chinese characters onto the website. "When I study each character, I wonder what the ancient Chinese thought," said Sears.
After visiting many Chinese cities, Sears learned more about China and ancient Chinese culture. He said when he came to China in the last century, few Chinese could speak good English. "However, you can hear English in many places in China now. Chinese language and culture were mysterious and not known by people in most countries then, but now, more and more people in the world are learning Chinese, even Chinese history, traditional Chinese medicine and so on," Sears added.
At present, the 70-year-old American has made his home in China. "When I die, I hope my website will live on, and I'm planning to write a book about my research. This will be my gift to China." he said.

During the COVID-19 pandemic(大流行病), many people under lockdown feel lonely and bored. "There is a loneliness(孤独)epidemic(流行病)," said John Dattilo from Pennsylvania State University, US.
So he, together with an international team of researchers, studied how to reduce(降低)loneliness during the pandemic.
According to their new study, reducing loneliness has something to do with doing enjoyable activities that need both concentration(注意力)and skills.
"When people concentrate on what they are doing, they enter a state(状态)called 'flow(心流)' Dattilo explained. "Flow can be achieved by doing activities that we value and that ask us to concentrate fully to use our skills."
To achieve a state of flow, there must be a balance between the challenge(挑战)of the task and your skill level. For example, if you're trying to create a complex(复杂的)computer program but your skill level is low, then you're likely to feel stressed instead of achieving "flow". On the contrary(相反地), if the task is too easy, then boredom will start and "flow" will not appear, either.
If you have artistic skills, for example, playing the piano or painting can lead to flow. So can things like skiing, writing and storytelling, depending on who you are.
"When we enter a state of flow, we experience momentary(片刻的)enjoyment." Dattilo said. "When we leave a state of flow, we are often surprised by how much time has passed."
However, watching television usually doesn't help people enter flow, according to Dattilo, because there aren't any challenges.
"People tend to thrive(茁壮成长)on healthy activities and challenge," said Dattilo. "We hope this research will help people live fuller, happier, healthier lives."
24. What did Dattilo study
A. Why people feel lonely. B. How to reduce loneliness.
C. What enjoyable activities are. D. Why people like a new challenge.
25. How do people feel when they enter the "flow" state
A. They are concentrating and happy. B. They feel time passes too quickly.
C. They feel stressed and tired. D. They are lonely and bored.
26. Which activity is possible to help people achieve flow
A. Writing. B. Eating nuts. C. Watching TV. D. Chatting.
27. What can we do to reduce loneliness according to Dattilo
A. Follow a healthy lifestyle. B. Learn as many skills as possible.
C. Do some enjoyable and challenging tasks. D. Complete impossible challenges.

Lanterns have been part of Chinese culture for centuries and play an important part in many celebrations. In ancient times, there were mainly three kinds of lanterns.
Palace lanterns(宫灯)
They were mainly used in palaces in ancient times. When making palace lanterns, fine wood was used. The palace lanterns were covered with silk or glass. Different kinds of pictures were drawn on the covers. These lanterns were not only used as lights but also as decorations in palaces.
Gauze lanterns(纱灯)
Less expensive bamboo and gauze were used to cover the lanterns. Red gauze was used when making them. In Chinese culture, red lanterns are symbols of happiness. So red lanterns are always hung on important festivals such as Lantern Festival, Spring Festival and National Day in parks or along main streets. In some famous Chinatowns abroad, you can see red lanterns all the year round. They have become a symbol of Chinese culture worldwide.
Shadow-picture lanterns(走马灯)
They were usually used for amusement. The shape was much like that of the palace lanterns. There were two layers (层)of covers and pictures were drawn on the inside layer. When the candle was lit, the heat caused a paper wheel inside the lantern to tum around, so that moving pictures appeared on the outside cover.
