Today’s classroom is full of technology, bringing a lot of convenience to teaching. However, if we place
these technologies before students’ enquiry, we can be robbing ourselves of our greatest tool: our students’ Questions. I’ve been teaching for 13 years now, and it took a life-threatening situation to drive me out of 10 years of pseudo-teaching and help me realize that students’ questions are the seeds of real learning, not some scripted
course that gave them random information.
At 35 years old, with a 2-year-old child at home and my second one on the way, I was diagnosed with a very serious disease. I was frightened. But my doctor assured me and told me three things. He said first, his curiosity drove him to ask hard Questions about the procedure, about what worked and what didn’t work. Second, he embraced and didn’t fear the messy and inevitable process of trial and error. And third, through intense reflection, he gathered the information that he needed to design and revise the procedure, and then, with a steady hand, he
saved my life.
Now I absorbed a lot from these words of wisdom, and before I went back into the classroom that fall, I
wrote down three rules of my own that I bring to my lesson planning still today.
Rule No. 1: curiosity comes first. Questions can be windows to great instruction, but not the other way
around.
Rule No. 2: embrace the mess. We know learning is hard. The scientific method, trial and error, is clearly
demonstrated in Chapter 1, but we just skip it.
Rule No. 3: practise reflection. What we do is important. It deserves our care, but it also deserves our revision. Can we be the surgeons of our classrooms As if what we are doing one day will save lives. If we leave behind this simple role as spreaders of content and embrace a new role as cultivators of curiosity and enquiry, we
just might bring a little bit more meaning to students’ school days, and spark their imagination.
4 .What does the author think of the technology used in today’s classroom
A .It robs teachers of their curiosity.
B .It makes the classroom special and fancy.
C .It should be placed after students’ enquiry.
D .It can be teachers’ greatest tool in the classroom.
5 .What does the underlined word “pseudo-teaching” in paragraph 1 refer to
A .Real teaching. B .Ineffective teaching.
C .Lifelong teaching. D .Informal teaching.
6 .Which of the following is one of the rules the author summarized in the speech
A .Be open to trial and error. B .Avoid messes and risks.
C .Great instruction matters. D .Practice makes perfect.
7 .What is the author’s purpose of the speech
A .To show life is too precious to waste.
B .To compare two different methods of teaching.
C .To stress the importance of a teacher’s curiosity.
D .To introduce three rules to promote students’ learning.

This month millions of American kids can forget about classroom bells and set off for grandparents’ homes, sleep-away camps and lifeguard stands. But the summer vacation hasn’t always been a birthright of US
schoolchildren. Before the Civil War, schools operated on one of two calendars, neither of which included a
summer vacation. Rural schooling was divided into summer and winter terms, leaving kids free to help with the farm work in the spring planting and fall harvest seasons. Urban students, meanwhile, regularly had as many as 48
weeks of study a year, with one break per quarter.
In the 1840s, however, educational reformers like Horace Mann moved to combine the two calendars out of concern that rural schooling was not enough and that overusing of young minds could lead to nervous disorders. Summer appeared as the obvious time for a break: it offered a rest for teachers, fitted in the farming calendar and
reduced doctors’ concern that packing students into hot classrooms would promote the spread of disease.
But people’s opinion about the modern US school year, which averages 180 days, is still divided. Some experts say its pleasant but lazy summer break, which took hold in the early 20th century, is one of the reasons maths skills and graduation rates of US high schoolers ranked well below average in two international education reports published in 2007. Others insist that with children under increasing pressure to devote their downtime to
internships (实习) or study, there is still room for an institution that protects the lazy days of childhood.
8 .What did the rural school calendar before the Civil War allow children to do
A .Enjoy a summer vacation. B .Take a break each quarter.
C .Have 48 weeks for study a year. D .Assist their parents with farm work.
9 .What did the educational reformers do in the 1840s
A .They introduced summer vacation. B .They shortened rural school terms.
C .They promoted the study of farming. D .They advocated higher pay for teachers.
10 .Which of the following is NOT a reason why the reformers chose summer for the break
A .Rural students could help with farm work at home.
B .Classrooms were packed with students.
C .Teachers could refresh themselves during the vacation.
D .There were concerns that students might get sick in the summer heat.
11 .Why are some people unhappy about the modern US school year
A .It pushes teachers too hard. B .It reduces the quality of education.
C .It ignores scientific instruction. D .It includes no time for internships.

primary and middle school students, the Ministry of Education said on Tuesday.
Great progress has been made in controlling the after-school tutoring market and the number of academic tutoring organizations has been reduced — the number online academic tutoring organizations has been cut by 84.1%, and the number of offline ones by 83.8%, which means students now have more chances to enjoy their
after-school life.
Lyu Yugang, director of the Ministry of Education’s department of basic education, said almost all primary and middle schools now offer various after-school activities on weekdays to meet students’ needs for all-round
development.

guideline was introduced.
Lyu said that in a survey conducted by the National Bureau of Statistics, 73% of parents said their children’s homework had been markedly reduced and 85% said they were satisfied with the after-school service offered
schools.

Everyone learns a little bit differently. Finding out your learning style will show you how to best improve
your understanding of different topics.
Read about and experiment with different learning styles. There are many ways you can use to research a
topic. Head to your local library and ask the reference librarian. 16 Then, start experimenting with
different learning styles. It can be useful to try a new method of learning to figure out which one is your style.
Take several self-assessments and identify which style is best for you. You can find a number of websites offering free, online quizzes (测试) to help analyze your preferred learning styles based on your responses. Search
the web for a reliable site, and take several quizzes, as it’s common to get different results. 17
Reflect on your experiences. The results of your self-assessments can give you a good idea of which learning
style applies to you. 18 Combine what you know about yourself with the results of your quizzes.
19 It can be helpful to get some additional feedback to determine your learning style. Talk to your
current or past teachers. Ask them for tips about how to improve your quality of learning.
Put your findings to the test. Once you’ve determined your learning style, you can adapt your educational experiences so that you can learn more quickly and easily. 20 As you get to know yourself better, you’ll
figure out the best way for you to access and remember information.
A .Learn with others.
B .Talk to a professor.
C .You will be more likely to find out new information.
D .Or ask the guidance consultant at your school for some information.

and 27 students to see where we would go if we were in-person through live streaming. You’d be
surprised — they were rather 28 .
A lot of my students’ parents were first 29 or were on the front lines, so my students’ siblings (兄弟 姐妹) were also watching and trying to get their own 30 . Therefore, I’d be talking to my students and their younger siblings in the background. I learned all their names and their 31 names. I’d call attendance (考勤) and 32 all of them — snakes, dogs, cats, everybody — were there. And they were so excited,
33 the ones that didn’t turn on their 34 at first. They’d say, “Ah, Mr. Dias, you didn’t say hi to
Pinky, my dog who’s right here.” We did anything and everything to keep them 35 for those entire eight
hours of the day.

Anybody passing by the school’s football grounds wouldn’t miss noticing Jake Harvey and his teammates talking about soccer. They always made sure they only selected skilled players to join their team. One day, Jake was talking with his friends about choosing a new goalkeeper as the previous one had moved to another city with his parents. At that moment, a newcomer in their class Sam Thompson, walked over with a big smile on his face,
saying he was ready to play. Jake’s team paused and turned in disbelief, staring at the boy’s artificial leg.
“We only need the best of the best... you get what I mean ” Jake said.
Sam’s smile faded away (逐渐消失) while his eyes filled with tears, but he didn’t want his tears to weaken him in front of the boys. “It’s your team, and you know who fits... I respect your decision.” Sam turned around
and left, wiping away his tears.
Meanwhile, Mr. Jones, the school, s physical trainer, saw what happened from his office window.
After the practice session, he walked over to Jake and took him aside. “Well, I saw what happened, and if I’m not wrong, you sent away that newcomer, right ” Mr. Jones asked Jake. “Do you have any idea who he is ”
Jake was shocked as Mr. Jones revealed Sam’s background.
As it turned out, Sam was captain of the soccer team in his previous school. He was also an excellent
goalkeeper who had won several gold medals for his team. Unfortunately, one day, Sam’s family met with a car
accident on their way home from a vacation. The car was set ablaze ( 着火), and though Sam got out safely, he realized his little sister was still in the car. He risked his own life and rushed to save her. As a result, his left leg
was severely injured and had to be cut off later. Jack was shocked by Sam’s bravery.

Today’s classroom is full of technology, bringing a lot of convenience to teaching. However, if we place these technologies before students’ enquiry, we can be robbing ourselves of our greatest tool: our students’ Questions.
It deserves our care, but it also deserves our
revision.

But the summer vacation hasn’t always been a birthright of US schoolchildren. Before the Civil War, schools operated on one of two calendars, neither of which included a summer vacation.
Some
experts say its pleasant but lazy summer break, which took hold in the early 20th century, is one of the reasons maths skills and graduation rates of US high schoolers ranked well below average in two international education reports published in 2007.
D
More than 80% of after-school academic tutoring (学业辅导) organizations have closed down or turned to other fields of business as a result of ongoing efforts to reduce the excessive ( 过 多 的) academic burden on
primary and middle school students, the Ministry of Education said on Tuesday.

He was also an excellent goalkeeper who had won several gold medals for his team. Unfortunately, one day, Sam’s family met with a car accident on their way home from a vacation. The car was set ablaze (着火), and though Sam got out safely, he realized his little sister was still in the car. He risked his own life and rushed to save her. As a result, his left leg
