三、阅读(共两节,每小题2.5分,满分50分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
Facial expressions carry meaning that is determined
by situations and relationships. For example, in American culture(文化) the smile is in general an expression of pleasure. Yet it also has other uses. A woman's smile at a police officer does not carry
the same meaning as the smile she gives to a young child. A smile may show love or politeness. It can also hide true feelings. It often causes confusion(困惑) across cultures. For example, many people in Russia consider smiling at strangers
in public to be unusual and even improper. Yet many Americans smile freely at strangers in public places (although this
is less common in big cities). Some Russians believe that Americans smile in the wrong places; some Americans
believe that Russians don't smile enough. In Southeast Asian cultures, a smile is frequently used to cover painful feelings. Vietnamese may tell a sad story but end the story with a smile.
Our faces show emotions(情感), but we should not attempt(尝试) to "read" people from another culture as we would "read" someone from our own culture. The fact that members of one culture do not express their emotions as openly
as members of another do does not mean that they do not experience emotions.
Rather, there are cultural differences in the amount of facial expressions permitted. For example, in public and in formal situations many Japanese
do not show their emotions as freely as Americans do. When with friends, Japanese and Americans seem to show their emotions
similarly.
It is difficult to generalize about Americans
and facial expressiveness because of personal and cultural differences in the United
States. People from certain cultural backgrounds in the
United States seem to be more facially expressive than others. The key is to try not to judge people whose ways of showing emotion are different. If we judge according to our own cultural habits, we may make the mistake of "reading" the other person incorrectly.
21.What does the smile usually mean in America
A.Love. B.Politeness. C.Joy. D.Thankfulness.
22.The author mentions the smile of the Vietnamese to prove that smile can .
A.show friendliness to strangers B.be used to hide true feelings
C.be used in the wrong places D.show personal habits
23.What should we do before attempting to "read" people
A.Learn about their relations with others.
B.Understand their cultural backgrounds.
C.Find out about their past experience.
D.Figure out what they will do next.
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
Before uploading a photo of ourselves to social
media, chances are that we'll use an app to smooth our
skin, make our eyes look bigger, and lips fuller. With a couple of taps on our mobile phone, we can get a quick fix and present the "best" version of ourselves to the world. However, the problem is, when we simply edit our imperfections away, we're also changing the way we look at ourselves.
Last month, researchers published the article "Selfies—Living in the Era of Filtered(过滤的) Photographs". The article analysed photo editing apps' bad influences
on people's self-respect and their possibility to cause appearance anxieties. The researchers also warned that such apps make it difficult to tell the
difference between reality and fantasy. "These apps allow one to change his or her appearance
in minutes and follow an unrealistic standard of beauty, " the article reads.
In the past, people may have compared their looks to those of famous persons. But for today's young people, beauty standards are most likely set by what they
see on social media. "From birth, they are born into an age of social platforms where their feelings of self-worth
can be based purely on the number of likes and followers that they have, which is linked to how good they look. " British cosmetic doctor Tijion ESho told TheIndependent. This is why many young people suffer an identity
trouble when it comes to appearance.
"Now you've got this daily comparison of your real
self to this fake self that you present on social media, " Renee Engeln, a professor of psychology, told the HuffPost website. Engeln further pointed out that when people spend too much time making such
comparisons, they may become "beauty sick" and find it difficult to accept what they actually
look like. "Because between you and the world is a mirror, it's a mirror that travels with you everywhere. You can't seem to put it down. " She told The Washington Post. So when we look in a real mirror, we shouldn't think to ourselves, "Do I look as good as myself in the filtered photos " Instead, we should think, "I feel good. I have my health. "
24.Before uploading a photo to social media, we will probably .
A.have an operation to make our eyes look bigger
B.use some cream to smooth our skin
C.use an app to fix our photo
D.edit our perfections away
25.What can we learn from Paragraph 2
A.In many ways, photo editing apps are beneficial to people.
B.Photo editing apps are likely to cause people's concern about their appearance.
C.Photo editing apps can make us more beautiful.
D.Photo editing apps help people judge realistic beauty.
26.When it comes to appearance, why do many young people suffer an identity trouble
A.They compare their looks to those of famous persons.
B.Beauty standards are set by social media.
C.They are born feeling unconfident about themselves.
D.Their feelings of self-worth depend on their appearance.
27.According to Engeln, we should .
A.feel good about what we actually look like
B.spend more time making comparisons between ourselves and famous people
C.take a mirror with us everywhere
D.try to look as good as ourselves in the filtered photos

Stories are shared in many ways. They are described in books and magazines. They are read around the campfire at night. They are randomly distributed from stand-alone booths. But what else
To revive(复兴)literature in the era of fast news and smartphone addiction, Short Edition, a French publisher of short-form literature, has set up more than 30 story dispensers (分发机)in the USA in the past years to deliver fiction at the
push of a button at restaurants, universities and government offices.
Francis Ford Coppola, the film director and winemaker, liked the idea so much that he invested in the
company and placed a dispenser at his Cafe Zoetrope in San Francisco. Last month public libraries in some other cities announced they would be
setting them up, too. There is one on the campus at Penn State. A few can be found in downtown West Palm Beach, Fla. And Short Edition plans to announce more, including at the Los Angeles International Airport.
"Everything old is new again," said Andrew Nurkin, the director of the Free Library of Philadelphia, which is one of the libraries that set up the dispensers. "We want people to be easily exposed to literature. We want to advance literacy among children and inspire their creativity. "
Here's how a dispenser works: It has three buttons
on top indicating choices for stories that can be read in one minute, three minutes or five minutes. When a button is pushed, a short story is printed. The stories are free. They are chosen from a computer category of more than 100, 000 original submissions by writers whose works have been evaluated by Short
Edition's judges, and transmitted over a mobile network. Offerings can be tailored to specific interests, like children's fiction or romance. Short Edition gets stories for its category by holding writing contests.
Short Edition set up its first booth in 2016 and
has 150 machines worldwide. "The idea is to make people happy," said Kristan Leroy, director of Short Edition. "There is too much unhappiness today. "

The end of the year is drawing near, and winter is in full swing. The season brings along with it strong winds and
snow—an environment that's never comfortable to be in.
This unpleasant and even frightening aspect of
winter can often be seen in literature. In Shakespeare's KingLear (1606), the king has
given away his kingdom and been rejected by his two ungrateful daughters. He is out in the winter cold, suffering things that are usually reserved for
the poorest and most unfortunate human beings.
The winter is bad enough for Lear, but being abandoned by his family is worse. A song from another Shakespeare's play, AsYouLikeIt(1599), is fitting for this poor old man's situation: "Blow, blow, thou winter wind/Thou art not so unkind/As man's
ingratitude (忘恩负义)". Here, winter is used to bring out the ugliness of inhumanity
(无人性). There aren't many things that are worse than winter, according to Shakespeare.
Once winter became less of a threat to human beings, literary works featuring it became more positive. Since Charles Dickens, the representation of the season in literature
has often featured happy Christmas celebrations.
The cold of the winter weather provides a contrast
to the fun going on indoors.
Dickens' A Christmas Carol (1843) was the start of this, but Christmas is still a common, cheery element (元素)in stories that feature winter scenes today. Consider the joy felt by Harry Potter and his friends in J. K. Rowling's Harry
Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (1997) as they sit down for their festive
meal:
Harry had never in all his life had such a Christmas
dinner. A hundred fat, roast turkeys; mountains of roast and boiled potatoes; platters of chipolatas;
tureens of buttered peas, silver boats of thick, rich gravy and cranberry sauce.
It is almost as much a pleasure to read about
the meal as it might have been to eat it.
Although winter still isn't the most cheerful
season in novels and poems, it's safe to say that writers have certainly "warmed up" since Shakespeare's days.
32.What's the author's main purpose in writing this article
A.To recommend some winter stories in literature.
B.To explain what winter is like in literary works.
C.To describe certain customs that are related to winter.
D.To tell us why winter is described as unpleasant in literature.
33.What can we learn from Shakespeare's works
A.Shakespeare didn't like winter for its bad weather.
B.King Lear was forced to give up being a king in a cold winter.
C.It's in winter when King Lear drove his two daughters off.
D.Winter is compared with the ugly side of humanity.
34.Why does the author mention Charles Dickens in the passage
A.A lot of his works are related to winter.
B.He is the most popular author of winter stories.
C.He started a new way of representing winter.
D.His works make people feel cheerful in winter.
35.The example of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is used mainly to show .
A.traditional Christmas food makes the winter cheery
B.Christmas is still a symbol of joy in modern stories
C.it's a pleasure to read Christmas-related books in winter
D.winter has become the happiest season in literary works

【解析】【听力原文】W: Good morning to you all—parents, students and my fellow teachers. Thank you for coming along to say goodbye. I know we all have to retire sooner or later, but it does feel like a sad occasion to me, because I have had so many happy years at this school. It feels like just yesterday that I was leaving my previous job to join this school. My last 25 years' working for this school has passed so quickly. Perhaps it is because I have been in such a good school. From the 12-year-olds in the first year, to those who are now 18 and ready to leave for university or a job, I have enjoyed working with you all. I can honestly say that getting this job was like winning a prize. I have met some amazing, wise people—star students, great friends. Recently our school has had a survey on reading literature works after class. It shows that about 65% of the students would like to spend some time reading while about 35% dislike reading in their leisure time.
According to the survey, the students who like reading literature works think it is always pleasant to read some interesting books. Besides, it helps to get rid of stress and get relaxed. Meanwhile, reading can enrich their knowledge and broaden their horizons. But for other students time is not enough because they have too much homework to do. Some complain that literature works are so thick that they have hardly enough patience to finish them. Some even think that it won't help them at all with their exams.

For many weeks, the Meredith family continued to offer popcorn to Bernard.
【答案】21.C

B.Photo editing apps are likely to cause people's concern about their appearance.
C.Photo editing apps can make us more beautiful.
D.Photo editing apps help people judge realistic beauty.
26.When it comes to appearance, why do many young people suffer an identity trouble
A.They compare their looks to those of famous persons.
B.Beauty standards are set by social media.
C.They are born feeling unconfident about themselves.
D.Their feelings of self-worth depend on their appearance.
27.According to Engeln, we should .
A.feel good about what we actually look like

To revive(复兴)literature in the era of fast news and smartphone addiction, Short Edition, a French publisher of short-form literature, has set up more than 30 story dispensers (分发机)in the USA in the past years to deliver fiction at the
push of a button at restaurants, universities and government offices.
Francis Ford Coppola, the film director and winemaker, liked the idea so much that he invested in the
company and placed a dispenser at his Cafe Zoetrope in San Francisco. Last month public libraries in some other cities announced they would be

"Everything old is new again," said Andrew Nurkin, the director of the Free Library of Philadelphia, which is one of the libraries that set up the dispensers. "We want people to be easily exposed to literature. We want to advance literacy among children and inspire their creativity. "

Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (1997) as they sit down for their festive
meal:
Harry had never in all his life had such a Christmas
dinner. A hundred fat, roast turkeys; mountains of roast and boiled potatoes; platters of chipolatas;
tureens of buttered peas, silver boats of thick, rich gravy and cranberry sauce.
