“Bill, you never miss!”Joe said admiringly. “Unless I'm in a real game,” Bill complained. “Then I miss all the time.” Joe knew that Bill was right. Bill performed much better when he was having fun with Joe in the school yard than he did when he was playing for the school team in front of a large crowd. “Maybe you just need to practice more,” Joe suggested. “But I practice all the time with you!” Bill objected. He shook his head. “I just can't play well when people are watching me.” “You play well when I'm watching,” Joe pointed out. “That's because I've known you since we were five years old,” Bill said with a smile. “I'm just not comfortable playing when other people are around.” Joe nodded and understood, but he also had an idea.
The next day Joe and Bill met in the school yard again to practice. After a few minutes, Joe excused himself. “Practice without me,” Joe said to his friend. “I'll be back in a minute.”
Joe hurried through the school building, gathering together whomever he could find—two students, a math teacher, two secretaries, and a janitor(看门人). When Joe explained why he needed them, everyone was happy to help. Joe reminded the group to stay quiet as they all went toward the school's basketball court. As Joe had hoped, Bill was still practicing basketball. He made five baskets in a row without noticing the silent people standing behind him.
“Hey, Bill!” Joe called out finally. Bill turned. A look of surprise came over his face. “I just wanted to show you that you could play well with people watching you,” Joe said. “Now you'll have nothing to worry about for the next game!”

Osaka, Japan—the defending champion China lifted the FIVB Volleyball Women's World Cup trophy(奖杯)with perfect 11 straight wins after easing past Argentina 3-0 here on Sunday. With their eleventh win, China won the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Cup.
This year, the World Cup has been played across different cities, and the Chinese team had training sessions even on traveling days when some participating teams chose to rest up after a tiring flight. “Coach Lang focuses on details of the technique in the training sessions, and I feel our team has become more balanced.” Captain Zhu Ting said. This firm(严格的) approach explains how China managed to turn the table(扭转局面) against the United States at the World Cup. Never give up, especially in adversity(逆境), and that's what the spirit of Chinese women's volleyball team means.
When the team struggled, Zhu was always there, doing whatever was needed to carry the team forward. That's why she has become a national volleyball icon(偶像), just like “Iron Hammer” Lang. As for Lang, she took over the flag from her former coach Yuan Weimin, who was behind China's rise in the beginning. From coach Yuan to coach Lang, and spiker(主攻手)Lang to spiker Zhu, the flag bearers may have changed over time, but the craving for championships and the steely desire and determination remain the same.
Volleyball is a team sport and behind the on-court team there is always a supportive(给予帮助的) coaching team and staff. Lai Yawen is one of the members, shouldering responsibilities as both vice director of China's Volleyball Management Center and assistant coach. Apart from coordinating(使协调) between coaches and players, Chinese coaches and foreign coaches and sometimes within Chinese coaches, she also has to do chores. During Rio 2016, assistant coach Yuan Lingxi headed for the arena(竞技场)at 6 am every day to film the matches and would return to the Olympic Village at 2 am when he would start analyzing China's opponents(对手) and file(送交) reports. There are many Lais and Yuans that are not known by the public, but who remain indispensable for the team to overcome difficulties and reach their peak.

A.Being a special team.
B.Sticking to the end.
C.Winning every game.

7.Why does Zhu Ting become a national volleyball icon
A.Because she wins many awards in the World Cup.
B.Because she keeps strong desire and determination.
C.Because she takes lots of training after the tiring flight.
D.Because she does everything to help the team forward.
8.What does the author intend to express in the last paragraph
A.Hard work is vital in volleyball matches.
B.The coach has a great influence on players.

My First Marathon (马拉松)
A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn't do either well. He later informed me that I was “not athletic”.
The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck(粘贴) with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!
The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn't even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces(鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign: “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!”
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I was starving!
As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels(世俗标签), I can now call myself a “marathon winner”.

Ray Tokuda, a 54-year-old Japanese American, is proud of the title his school has given him. He is a Shifu, a Chinese word literally meaning a master, mentor or senior practitioner of martial arts.
Tokuda has reason to be proud. He has been involved with Chinese martial arts for almost four decades. After learning them at the martial arts school in New Mexico State, today he is among the most experienced kung fu teachers in the school.
Practicing martial arts two to three hours and helping students improve their skills have become Tokuda's daily routine. He expects to practice and teach martial arts for the rest of his life. “I'm still learning. It's worth more than a lifetime to learn Chinese martial arts,” he said. “Once I started, I just couldn't stop. I think it's also the magic of Chinese culture.”
Tokuda was sent to the martial arts school when he was 10. He still remembers how unwilling he was when starting out. “My father had always wanted to learn Chinese martial arts but never got the chance, so he put his kid in,” he said. “I was so afraid at that time because I thought kung fu was all about fighting.”
But things changed after he learned that martial arts were more than punching(拳打) and kicking(猛踹).
“One of the things martial arts teach me is overcoming adversity,” Tokuda said. “As a little kid, my first lesson was like, oh, look, this is a thing that I can get through by diligence, perseverance(毅力) and dedication(奉献), and that was priceless for my life.”
Learning Chinese martial arts opened a gateway for him to better understand Chinese culture because he could hear a lot of ancient Chinese kung fu-related stories. “It is like in America, where we hear stories about knights in shining armor(盔甲) and King Arthur and noble deeds done,” he said. “I feel martial arts preserve something of ancient China that can't be found in books. They are sort of an oral history.”
Tokuda has also been invited to various events in his home state to showcase traditional Chinese culture, including the dragon dance and lion dance, which he also learnt at the martial arts school. Because of this, he is now considered a cultural envoy(使者) in the eyes of the public.

At the time, it seemed that watching Trashaun would simply be a(n) 5 moment for Jayce. 6 little did Lewis know that a family friend had already reached out to the Des Moines Register, asking the newspaper to help set up a meeting with Trashaun to build

Until last year, I was trying to look like the slim girls on TV even though I knew that it was 1 (possible). To lose weight, I tried every new diet I read about online. I tried no-fat, low-fat, 5∶2, only bananas, no bananas—I almost 2 (go) mad.
Then an article changed me. It said instead of asking “Am I fat ” I should be asking “Am I fit ” I didn't know a letter could make such a 3 (different)! Then I started thinking about fitness rather than weight. I didn't say that I wanted to lose three kilos. Instead, I would say I wanted to run two kilometres in eight 4 (minute) or that I wanted to be able to do 30 push-ups. I preferred 5 (add) healthy foods to my meals rather than cut 6 the foods I enjoyed. I still had a burger now 7 then, but I would add a salad or an apple.
Finally, I stopped 8 (compare) myself with actresses and models and looking for things that were wrong with my face or body. Instead, I made a list of the things I liked about 9 (I). I became more positive about myself and my body. As 10 result, I became both happier and healthier.
