In 1885, a young doctor named Conan Doyle opened offices in London. He wanted to be a successful doctor, but for some reasons he never found enough patients. To pass the time, he began to write stories and send them to the newspapers.
Conan Doyle's stories were about a clever detective, Sherlock Holmes. Conan Doyle wrote that Sherlock Holmes lived in Baker Street in London, and people with problems came to him for help. Even police detectives came to Sherlock Holmes with their problems, too. He was able to solve mysteries that the cleverest policemen in England were unable to figure out. Sometimes Sherlock Holmes could solve a mystery without leaving his chair. He listened carefully to the information his client (委托人) gave and figured out the answer. At other times he spent days or weeks looking for clues. Sherlock Holmes traveled to different cities and countries to solve the mysteries. Sometimes he wore disguises, pretending to be an old man, or a sailor. Holmes did anything to find out the answer to the mysteries he was working on. His best friend Dr. Watson kept him company (陪伴) on most of his adventures.
Sherlock Holmes is the most famous detective in English literature, but many people don't understand that he is a fictional character, not a real person. The English post offices report that people still send mail to Sherlock Holmes in Baker Street. Even he gets more than 2,000 letters every year.

Honeybees rely heavily on flower patterns not just colors when searching for food, new research shows.
A team led by the University of Exeter tested bee behaviour and built bee’s-eye-view simulations (模拟装置) to work out how they see flowers.
Honeybees have low resolution vision, so they can only see a flower’s pattern clearly when they are within few centimeters. However, the new’ study shows bees can very effectively distinguish between different flowers by using a combination of colour and pattern.
In a series of tests, bees rarely ignored pattern, suggesting colour alone does not lead them to flowers. This may help to explain why some colours that are visible to bees are rarely produced by flowers in nature.
“We studied a large amount of data on plants and bee behaviour,” said Professor Natalie Hempel, from Centre for Research in Animal Behaviour. “By training and testing bees using man-made patterns of shape and colour, we found they relied flexibly on their ability to see both of these elements. Showing how insects see colour and learn colour patterns is important to understand how pollinators (传粉者) may, or may not, create evolutionary ‘pressures’ on the colours and patterns that flowers have evolved (进化). Our findings suggest that flowers don’t need to evolve too many different flower colours, because they can use patterns to vary their displays so bees can tell them apart from other flowers.”
One typical feature identified in the study is that the outside edges of flowers usually contrast strongly with the plant’s leaves while the centre of the flower does not have such a strong contrast with the leaf colour. This could help bees quickly identify colour differences and find their way to flowers.
While flowers may be beautiful to humans, Professor Hempel stressed that understanding more about bees and the threats they face meant we need to see the world “through the eyes of a bee and the mind of a bee.”
45、What does the new research focus on
A. The source of bees’ food supply. B. The evolution of bees’ behavior.
C. The effect of bees’ poor eyesight. D. The way of bees finding flowers.
46、What aspect of research into bees did Hempel highlight
A. Research data. B. Research methods.
C. Research objects. D. Research frequency.
47、According to the passage, which statement is true
A. Bees an see a flower’s pattern clearly from a distance.
B. After some training, bees can identify both colors and shapes.
C. Flowers try to produce colors visible to bees.
D. Professor Hempel stressed we need to see the world with a bee’s eyes.
48、What does Hempel think of flowers trying to evolve more colours
A. It’s not a must. B. It’s a pressing need.
C. It’s beyond belief. D. It’s a temporary solution.
49、What’s paragraph 6 mainly about
A. An explanation of the research intention.
B. Dramatic changes in the research strategy.
C. Conflict between different research outcomes.

Since the early to mid-2010s, social media apps have made a permanent home in many people’s phones, and spending time on social media has become as much of a daily activity as drinking water. Since so many people are on it for much of their days—especially kids, teens, and young adults—there is increased concern over what social media is doing to people.
Many argue that social media is an unhealthy way to pass the time, and that false information from online is causing confusion and panic. This type of thing happens with every generation when something new that people don’t understand comes along: So many people thought rock-and-roll was making teens morally bad, which really wasn’t the case. It is fair to say that the teenage years are hard, and that teens need an escape. Back before phones, teens would listen to rock music as a form of escapism, or they would watch TV, go to the movies, skate around, or dress up in crazy clothes. Unfortunately, all of those things at one point in time were blamed for being a bad influence on young people. Social media is the new rock-and-roll: it’s a new thing, and people demonize(妖魔化)change.
For example, many believe that everything on social media apps is filtered(加滤镜)and that seeing perfect people and their perfectly edited lives often leads to lots of negative emotions. However, models, magazines. and movies have been using retouching(修整)tools for photos and media since Photoshop and other post-production services were invented. Social media has made it easier to see more edited pictures, but social media itself isn’t making people want to look a certain way. People should acknowledge that these pictures aren’t authentic, and the posts are made to look good on purpose. Social media is not to blame for body confidence issues when the things people want to look like aren’t even real in the first place.
It seems like most issues around social media are user errors, like anyone complaining there are too many people being addicted to social media. However, not everyone is addicted to social media; people who have any grasp on reality wouldn’t spend every waking second on the phone. It is really up to the individual how they use social media. Keeping up with the flood of posts, stories, and photos takes a lot of time—many young people admit that they spend hours on their phones every day. Yet, this seems like an easy problem to solve when the solution is simply clicking off the phone a couple hours early. Therefore, it is clear that moderation(适度)is the key to dealing with all the issues around social media.

Roy Austin first experienced an African adventure in 2018. All he wanted to do was get close to some African wildlife. Although Roy did realize this dream, he found something even more meaningful in Africa.
Roy spent time in many countries throughout East Africa. He was most interested in the people of rural Kenya, especially people of the Amboseli Primary and Secondary School.
During his stay, Roy became friends with several students and teachers at the school. He was deeply touched by their positive attitude, even though it was hard for them to get books and other school supplies. Even finding basic stationary was a challenge, not to mention the lack of school buildings.
In rural Kenya, school buildings are not built by the government. Students, their parents, and teachers find materials and build the schools themselves, or they have to raise money to get builders’ help. Without schools, buildings like libraries and classrooms are just dreams. The students and teachers of the schools very much wanted a library or at least some books to read.
After returning home to South Carolina in the United States, the Kenyan students’ yearning for something as seemingly “basic” as books to read still worried Roy. He decided to do whatever he could to help these children. So he started the organization Libraries for Kids International.
Since it was started, Roy has shipped over 11,000 books to 11 schools in African countries, including Kenya and Tanzania. To keep costs down, he uses the post office to send the books instead of a carrier like FedEx. The organization has helped to supply these schools with much-needed books, which brought Roy much happiness. He plans to continue shipping books to Africa.
