Unit 3 Language in use

Ask students to read the new words and expressions in Module 10. Use the word and expression cards to help them. 2. Get some students to read the conversation in Unit 1 in different roles. 3. Get the students to read the passage in Unit 2 on their own. Step 2 Language practice 1. Read the sentences in the box to the class. I have some photos that I took in Australia last year. They wear special hats that keep the flies away. The horse that I rode was lazy. The game that they like most is Australian football.

Step 3 Grammar that引导的定语从句 1. 关系代词that既可以指代人也可以指代物,所以that引导的定语从句既可以修饰人,也可以修饰物。如: The bike that I bought last month is broken. (that指代物) 我上个月买的自行车坏了。 The girl that wears a red coat is my sister. (that指代人) 那个穿着红色外套的女孩是我姐姐。 2. that在从句中可以作主语或宾语,作主语时不可以省略,作宾语时可以省略。如: The bag that lies on the ground is hers. (充当主语) 地上的那个包是她的。 The old man (that)I visited yesterday is my teacher. (充当宾语) 我昨天拜访的那位老人是我的老师。 3. 在先行词是事物的限定性定语从句中,that和which一般可以互换,但在下列情况下不可以互换,只能用that不能用which作引导词: (1)先行词是不定代词时,关系代词通常只用that,不用which。如: He did everything that he could do to help us. 他做了一切他能做的来帮助我们。 (2)先行词被序数词、形容词最高级,the only, the very, the last等修饰时,关系代词通常只用that,不用which。如: This is the most beautiful city that I’ve ever seen. 这是我见过的最漂亮的城市。 (3)先行词既有人又有物时,关系代词只用that不用which。如: Tom took photos of the things and people that he was interested in. 汤姆拍摄了他感兴趣的物和人的照片。 (4)主语是以who开头的特殊疑问句时,关系代词通常只用that,不用which。如: Who is the person that is talking with the headmaster 和校长说话的那个人是谁? 1.关系代词that既可以指代人也可以指代物,所以that引导的定语从句既可以修饰人,也可以修饰物。

Cathy Freeman, Aboriginal hero of Australia
One of the great heroes that competed at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games was an Aboriginal runner called Cathy Freeman. She has always been very proud to be an Aborigine. At the Commonwealth Games in 1990, she was the first Aboriginal runner to win a gold medal.
When she won the gold medal for the 400-metre race in the 2000 Olympics, she carried both an Australian flag and an Aboriginal flag. She has become a symbol of how different cultures in Australia can get along.
