Many countries have traditional dishes, made with special ingredients(原料) and prepared in a certain way. 1 , and when tourists visit, these are the foods they want to try. But why are some foods more popular than others in certain areas
Traditional ingredients
Typical recipes (菜谱) are usually made with native plant and animal products. For example, Korean dishes often include rice and soybeans because both plants are native to East Asia and grow well in hot, wet areas. In contrast, wheat grows well in drier areas, like the Middle East, where bread is a common staple(主要的) food. 2 , whereas inland cuisines(菜肴) tend to use more meat from farm animals.
Food preservation
Local cuisines often depend on how people traditionally prepared food for storage. In warm weather, meat and fish can go off quickly, so they must be cooked right away or preserved(贮存) for later. 3 , for that reason, modern Norwegian cuisine includes many smoked foods.
Cooking techniques
4 . In China, people often fry food in a deep metal pan or steam it in a basket over hot water. In Morocco, people cook traditional dishes in a special pot called a tajine. And some local dishes aren’t cooked at all.
Imported (进口的) ingredients
Sometimes local cuisines include ingredients that originally came from another place. 5 , while many Russian dishes are made with potatoes. However, all of these ingredients were brought to Europe from South America in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. But now they are common around the world.
A.Seafood is often a key ingredient in coastal areas
B.There is a danger that local food traditions will be lost
C.Many different cooking techniques are used around the world
D.For example, Italian dishes often include tomatoes and peppers
E.These local dishes can become symbols of a place and its culture
F.Nowadays, we can buy food products from all around the world
G.In Norway, the Vikings used to “cure” meat and fish by smoking them over a fire

Learning Chinese could be one of the most important decisions you have ever made. Chinese is becoming the language to learn in the 21st century. With the world’s largest population and a rapidly growing middle class, China stands to become the engine of the world’s economy in the coming years. This will make learning Chinese very important for people in many industries(行业), or for those of us who wish to visit China or learn from its culture and history.
There is an ongoing effort to modernize the writing system and standardize the language. An increasing number of people learning Chinese are learning the Mandarin, so unless you absolutely need to learn another dialect (such as Cantonese), be sure you are studying Mandarin.
For native English speakers, Chinese is one of the most difficult and most different languages to learn. The vocabulary is wholly unfamiliar and unlike anything we know. In addition, in the Chinese tone(声调) system, words are spoken in rising or falling tones, which help to distinguish between them. Furthermore, there is the Chinese writing system—a collection of thousands of individual ideograms (表意文字), or symbols, which represent a word or an idea. These ideograms have no phonetic value—that is to say, we can’t tell how the word is pronounced by how it is written. There is a method to present written Chinese in a phonetic script called pinyin. If you are learning Chinese, you’ll be working with this pinyin system, but the beauty of the traditional writing system shouldn’t be passed up(放弃). All these factors make learning Chinese difficult for us. Yet, for a determined learner, there’s always a way to overcome it.
1.Learning Chinese is becoming more and more important, because .

A.the author thinks Chinese is as difficult as English
B.the author is interested in the Chinese language and its culture

3.The last paragraph mainly tells us about .
A.the difficulties of learning Chinese

D.the Chinese writing system
4.What would be probably written following this text

Do you know how to pick a good book you’ll really like Here are some tips.
Start with your interest. 1 You can pick something that you love to read, not for school. They can be ancient martial(武术) arts, computers, or fashion design. You name it, and there are books about it.

Find a family favorite. Which book did your mother love best when she was at your age 4 Find out and give them a read—then you can share your thoughts about the book.
Find a quiet place and make time for the book. 5 You can put on some good music, get yourself some tea and let yourself be carried away by the book. You’ll see that time does fly when you’re reading something you love!

There was a time in the 1960’s and 1970’s when some people believed that coffee would replace tea as Britain’s favourite drink, but that did not happen, and today, tea remains Britain’s favourite drink.
To say that the British are fond of tea is something of an understatement(轻描淡写). From the royal(王室的) family down to the homeless and the out-of-work, tea is more than just a pleasure. It is an important part of life!
The popularity of tea in the United Kingdom has a long history. It was in 1657 that Thomas Garway, the owner of a coffee house, sold the first tea in London. The drink soon became popular as another choice besides coffee.
In those days, however, tea was not something for anyone. For a century and a half, it remained an expensive drink. Many bosses served a cup of it to their workers in the middle of the morning, thus inventing a lasting British tradition, the “tea break”. But as a social drink outside the workplace, tea was served for the nobility(贵族) and for the growing middle classes. Among those who had the money for tea, it became very popular as a drink to be enjoyed in cafés and “tea gardens”.
It was the 7th Duchess of Bedford who, in around 1800, started the popular “afternoon tea”, which took place at about four o’clock. At about the same time, the Earl of Sandwich popularized a new way of eating bread with something (e.g. jam) between them, and before long, a small meal at the end of the afternoon with tea and sandwiches had become part of a way of life.
As tea became much cheaper during the nineteenth century, its popularity spread right through British society. In working-class households, it was served with the main meal of the day, eaten when workers returned home after a day’s labour. This meal has become known as “high tea”.
Today, tea can be drunk at any time of day. Most people in Britain drink tea for breakfast. The mid-morning “tea break”is an institution in British offices and factories. Later in the day,“afternoon tea” is still a way of life in the south of England and among the middle classes, while “high tea”has remained a tradition in the north of Britain.
1.Who played an important part in the beginning of tea in England
A.Thomas Garway.
B.The royal family.
C.The Earl of Sandwich.
D.The Duchess of Bedford.
2.What can we learn from the passage
A.The “tea break” kept the workers from being sleepy after lunch.
B.Workers could enjoy a cup of tea in “tea gardens”at their workplace.
C.“High tea”was usually served with the main meal for the middle classes.
D.The “afternoon tea” together with sandwiches became popular in around 1800.
3.What is the best title of the passage
A.The Popularity of Tea
B.Tea and the British
C.Tea and the Middle Class
D.The History of Tea

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
Last Saturday, David was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy who is about eight years old. When David passed them, he heard the woman yell,“How stupid you are! You’re good at nothing.”David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs. Brown in middle school. After he entered middle school, David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David believed. But one day it all changed.
One day, in an English writing class, Mrs. Brown asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading it. A few days later, David handed in his story. He didn’t give it much thought. But the next day, to his surprise, the comment “well done” from Mrs. Brown came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written.
When David read that, he almost burst into tears. He never expected to be praised one day. He suddenly gained some self-confidence.
That day after he returned home, he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs. Brown the next morning. And again he was praised.
David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs. Brown to read and correct them for him. Mrs. Brown always corrected the mistakes he had made and gave him good advice to improve them. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it. He was no longer that boy who lacked self-confidence. He gained his confidence and was hopeful about his future.
He succeeded in entering college and kept writing. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published. With some more books coming out, he became famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs. Brown’s encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.
Paragraph 1:
Inspired by his own life story, David decided to do something for that boy.
Paragraph 2:
The mother was ashamed when she heard that.

Inspired by his own life story, David decided to do something for that boy. He went to the woman, who immediately recognized him because she had read his books and seen his pictures. David started to chat with her. He told her that what she said to her boy was not appropriate. Then he told her about the encouragement he once got from Mrs. Brown. In the end, he said, “I couldn’t have become a writer if I had believed I was good at nothing.”
Paragraph 2:
The mother was ashamed when she heard that. She realized that she shouldn’t have called her son stupid, which would make him lose confidence in himself. So she said, “Thank you for your advice. I’ll never say such things to him again. Instead, I’ll find out what he’s good at and encourage him.” The woman then left with the boy. 【七选五练】
Culture means any human behavior that is learned in human society. All of the meaningful parts of a culture are passed on to different generations through tradition or social learning. 1 Culture exists in agricultural as well as industrialized societies.
Culture is necessary for the survival and existence of human beings. Practically, everything humans know, think, value, feel, and do is learned through taking part in a sociocultural system. 2 Here is one of the cases of children growing up apart from human society. In the province of Midnapore in India, the director of a children’s home was told by local villagers that there were “ghosts” in the forest. Upon looking into the case, the director found that two children, one about eight years old and the other about six years old, appeared to have been living with a group of wolves in the forest. 3 In his diary, the director describes his first view of Kamala (as the older child was named) and Amala (the name given to the younger child):
Kamala was a terrible-looking being. His head was like a big ball of something covering the shoulders. 4 Their eyes were bright and sharp, unlike human eyes. They were very fond of raw meat and raw milk. Gradually, as they got stronger, they began going on all fours, and afterwards began to run on all fours, just like squirrels.
Children learn human language in the same way they learn other kinds of human behavior—by taking part in a cultural community. 5
A.From this viewpoint, all human groups have their own culture.
B.The children were the “ghosts” described by the local people.
C.This statement is well supported by some well-written cases.
D.Human beings can only develop human abilities by the local people.
E.Culture refers only to the high art and classical music of a particular society.
F.Close at its heels there came another terrible creature exactly like the first, but smaller in size.
G.They learn a certain human language as well as certain kinds of human behavior through their membership in a certain cultural community.

My first week in the United States was a cultural shock. Everything felt new to me, including the style of conversation, the community I lived in and even the type of food people ate.
In our community back home, people eat mutton and chicken. Pork and beef are also common among other communities, but eating beef is taken as an illegal act. Unlike Nepal, eating beef is common in the West where most of the people follow religions other than Hinduism.
Food is just an example. When people move from one part of the world to another, they should adapt themselves to the new culture. For example, going to the bars or getting drunk is not acceptable in my community, but it is common in the US after a certain age.
I was raised in a traditional Hindu family in Nepal. We have a conservative(保守的)opinion towards the marriage. Arranged marriages(包办婚姻)are common in which families decide whether the two should get married. Free love marriages are not allowed and are seldom seen. Same-sex marriage is also considered impossible.
To me, culture is a matter of habit. The culture is so deep-rooted in people’s minds that most people are against changes. It is always easy for them to do what they have been doing throughout their life. It may be difficult for anyone to adapt to a new culture.
However, with travel being an unavoidable thing for modern people, one always comes across different cultures. In such cases, one should be respectful and adaptive to the culture other people follow. The world is always a better place to live in when we have spaces for people of all cultures.

Specialists(专家) say it is not easy to get used to life in a new culture. “Culture shock” is what these specialists use when talking about the feelings that people have in a new environment. The specialists say that there are three stages of culture shock. In the first stage, the newcomers like their new environment. Then, when the fresh experience dies, they begin to hate the city, the country, the people, and everything else. In the last stage, the newcomers begin to get used to their surroundings and, as a result, enjoy their life more.
There are some evident factors(因素)in culture shock. The weather may be unpleasant. The customs may be different. The public service systems—the telephones, post office, or transportation—may be difficult to work out. The simplest things seem to be the biggest problems. The language may be difficult.
Who feels culture shock Everyone does in this way or that. But culture shock surprises most people. Very often the people having the worst culture shock are those who never had any difficulties in their own country. Coming to a new country, these people find they do not have the same positions as they have back home. They find themselves without any identify. They have to build a new self-image.
Culture shock gives rise to(使发生) a feeling of helplessness. This feeling may be homesickness. When homesick, people feel like staying inside all the time. They want to protect themselves from the strange environment, and create an escape inside their room for a sense of security(安全). This escape does solve the problem of culture shock for a short time, but it does nothing to make the person familiar with the culture.
