Should schoolchildren have jobs
Now at school, the last thing you probably want to do is to spend your weekends going to work. There is homework to do and sport to play. 1 When I was a teenager I had a Saturday job in a supermarket: stacking(摆放) shelves and working at the checkout.
Today in the UK you are allowed to work from the age of 13, and many children do take up part-time jobs. 2 Teenagers agree that it teaches valuable lessons about working with adults and also about managing your money. So, that’s no bad thing!
Some research has shown that not taking on a Saturday or holiday job could be harmful to a person later on. But despite this, recent statistics have shown that the number of schoolchildren in the UK with a part-time job has fallen by one fifth in the past five years.
3 Probably not. Some experts feel that young people feel going out to work will affect their performance at school, and they are under more pressure now to study hard and get good exam results. However, Geoff Barton, general secretary of the Association of School and College leaders, told BBC News,“Properly regulated part-time work is a good way of helping young people learn skills that they will need in their working lives.” In reality, it’s all about getting the right balance between doing part-time work and having enough time to study and rest.
4 One 13-year-old girl called Rachel, who has a Saturday job in a shop, told the BBC,“I enjoy my job because I’m earning money and it helps increase my confidence in speaking to people and socializing with people I work with.” That seems like something worth getting up on a Saturday morning. 5
A.Did you do a part-time job when you were at school
B.So you are not free to do what you are feeling like doing.
C.It is a waste of time and does no good to your career prospect.
D.It’s a taste(尝试) of independence and a useful thing to be put on your CV (简历).
E.Does this mean that British teenagers are more afraid of hard work now
F.But your parents probably persuade you to find a job and get some life experience.
G.Many young people actually want to work because it gives them a sense of freedom.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is mostly a desert. However, this has not stopped the country from creating great building projects. On September 6, UAE officials announced another great project—Mars Science City. Vast deserts and miles of coastlines provide plenty of better conditions for safe rocket launches (发射). And its position on the Earth makes it especially fit as the movement of the Earth provides an extra push, meaning less fuel is needed to get rockets into orbit(轨道). All these seem to make it possible.
The Mars Science City project, designed by Bjarke Ingels Group, or BIG, will provide a model to simulate (模仿) living on the surface of Mars, the red planet. It is part of the UAE’ s Mars 117 Project to lead the global race to land humans on Mars and be the first to build a settlement there. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid, Prime Minister and the ruler of Dubai, says,“The UAE seeks international support to develop technologies that benefit humans, and get prepared for a better future for more generations to come.”
Built outside Dubai, the 1.9 million square feet city is expected to cost $115 million. It will consist of several laboratories, similar to the ones imagined for the first Mars settlers. Scientists from around the world will be invited to do research to come up with methods to create food, water and energy, using techniques which can be copied onto the red planet. The living space, where the researchers can live for up to a year, will simulate the planet’s conditions as much as possible.
The research city will also include a museum showing famous space achievements to help educate and inspire children to carry on space exploration and discovery. To discover whether the construction method works on Mars, the museum’s walls will be 3D printed with the sand from the nearby desert. Now, if they would only add some living quarters for the general public to experience life on Mars without leaving Earth, life would be perfect.
1.What can we conclude about the United Arab Emirates
A.It is short of fine weather.
B.It is a nice place for launching rockets.
C.It can provide enough fuel supply.
D.It has the greatest scientists in the world.
2.What will scientists do in the laboratories
A.Educate visitors on trips to Mars.
B.Develop the Mars settlers’ imagination.
C.Find ways to produce food, water and energy on Mars.
D.Create a climate-controlled environment for future use.
3.Why will the museum’s walls be 3D printed
A.To show famous space techniques.
B.To make full use of the nearby desert.
C.To inspire children to love exploration.
D.To test whether the construction method can be used on Mars.

Whether they are big or small, everyone has dreams. Perhaps you have dreams which you have yet to realize. I certainly do. One reason why dreams never come true is that we don’t have a system in place to work towards them. Start working towards your goal today. Here are some steps to help you realize your dream:
★Identify(确认) your dream.
List what your dream would look like. 1 If your dream is to create a new moon, you may be disappointed, but don’t be afraid, either. If your dream is to be an author, that’s a dream you can achieve, but it may not be realistic to write the next The Purpose Driven Life.
★ 2
Write down action steps you can take towards your goal. Sticking with the idea of being an author, perhaps you could start with a blog. Then move to outline chapters. You might set aside a few hours a week to actually write the book. Record realistic dates to complete each step.
★Take a risk.
If you really want to succeed, you must be willing to risk failure. 3 The ones who achieve their dreams are the ones who are willing to take the risk.
★Stay consistent(一致的).
If you want to achieve your dream, you will have to keep at the task, even during the hard time. 4 These are how habits are developed. Many give up too soon, often just before the turning point towards success comes.
★Get started.
The longer you wait, the less likely you are to begin. 5
A.Make an action plan.
B.Clearly, it needs to be available.
C.Push yourself to complete scheduled action steps.
D.Facing challenges, most of us work harder.
E.Every great dream has a bit of risk involved.
F.Share your plan with people who like challenges.
G.If you think the dream is worth achieving, start today.

Do women make BETTER astronauts Russia locks an all-female crew in a space simulator(太空模拟器) for eight days to find out. Six Russian women have been sent into a spaceship to begin a unique experiment testing how an all-female crew would relate to others on a trip to the Moon and back.
“It’s interesting for us to see what is special about the way a female crew communicates,” said Sergei Ponomaryov, the experiment’s leader. “It will be particularly interesting in terms of psychology,” said the institute’s director Igor Ushakov. “I’d like to wish you a lack of conflicts, even though they say that in one kitchen, two housewives find it hard to live together,” he added.
The volunteers include scientific researchers, a doctor and a psychologist. The test period simulates(模仿) a flight to the Moon and back, with the women carrying out 10 experiments covering psychology and human biology. Russia sent the first woman into space, Valentina Tereshkova, in 1963 but has fallen behind since. Last year, it sent its fourth female astronaut into space, Yelena Serova. Serova complained of a great deal of media interest in how she would wash her hair aboard the International Space Station, pointing out that male astronauts did not face the same line of questioning.
The women found themselves fielding questions at a press conference about how they would act without men or makeup for eight days. “We are very beautiful without makeup,” said participant Darya Komissarova. Her colleague Anna Kussmaul was more direct: “We are doing work. When you’re doing your work, you don’t think about men and women.” They plan to spend their 11/2 hours per day of free time watching films, reading and playing board games. Team leader Yelena Luchnitskaya said she expected the women to deal with any conflict.

When I was a child, I dreamed of becoming different kinds of people in the future. Sometimes, I wished I was an astronaut going up into space, finding new planets and jumping around in a cool spacesuit. Sometimes, I imagined being a cowboy in the Wild West, wearing cool cowboy boots. On other occasions, I pretended to be a famous footballer, using my skills to score lots of goals for my team.
Looking back, I realize that imagination is a wonderful thing. I was able to create entire environments and scenarios(剧情梗概) in my head, using nothing more than my brain, and make things in my everyday surroundings to fit a story of the day. Growing up with siblings(兄弟姐妹) also helped, as it meant that even bigger stories could be created. We could combine our ideas and put our thoughts into action. It also allowed for more varieties(变化) in the stories, as sometimes I could be a hero while on other occasions, I would be a bad guy.
One of my all-time favorite memories as a kid was playing in my back garden. I played the role of Indiana Jones with my younger sister as my assistant and my brother as a bad person. We used everything in our garden, from the path to the fence, as a part of the storyline to create troubles that needed to be overcome, and we would keep the story going for hours!
My personal favorite game was searching the Easter eggs. My brother hid small chocolate eggs around the garden and my sister and I had to find them by answering questions or solving a puzzle. It was difficult, but finally we found all the eggs and shared them together.

A little girl whose parents had died lived with her grandmother and slept in an upstairs bedroom.
One night there was a fire in the house and the grandmother died while trying to rescue the child. The fire spread quickly, and the situation was terrible.
Neighbors called the fire department, and then stood helplessly by,unable to enter the house because flames blocked all the entrances. The little girl appeared at an upstairs window, crying for help, just as word spread among the crowd that the firefighters would be delayed a few minutes because they were all at another fire site.
Suddenly,a man appeared with a ladder, put it up against the side of the house and disappeared inside. When he reappeared,he had the little girl in his arms. He delivered the child to the waiting arms below, and then disappeared into the night.
An investigation revealed that the child had no living relatives, and weeks later a meeting was held in the town hall to determine who would take the child into their home and bring her up.
A teacher said she would like to raise the child. She pointed out that she could ensure her a good education. A farmer offered her a sheltered upbringing on his farm. He pointed out that living on a farm was healthy and satisfying. Others spoke, giving their reasons why it was to the child’s advantage to live with them.
Finally, the town’s richest resident rose and said,“I can give this child all the advantages that you have mentioned here, plus money and everything that money can buy.”
Throughout all this, the child remained silent, her eyes on the floor.
“Does anyone else want to speak ” asked the meeting chairman. A man came forward from the back of the hall. He walked slowly and appeared to be in pain.

Are you actually sick when you have spring fever Originally, yes. 1 But now people use it to mean a sudden increase of romantic feelings.
These days, we use “spring fever” to describe a restless feeling after the long, cold days of winter. 2 It is also a verb that means something happens or appears quickly.
Imagine that you are resting in a chair when suddenly you see a mouse run across the floor. You spring into action! You jump from the chair and run after the mouse! 3 And it works! But when you tell your roommate that you have caught a mouse in a trap, tears spring to her eyes. You feel bad, but she really should have told you about her pet mouse Charlie!
4 You say to her,“You can’t just spring that on me! I’ll need time to find another roommate!” But then you think that maybe it’s for the best. Every time you see her you feel guilty about Charlie. 5 She always expects you to buy her things: she wants you to spring for lunch, spring for movie tickets, and sometimes even spring for groceries.
So, when you spring for something, you pay for someone else.
A.Many people suffer a lot from it.

China has become the first country to successfully land a spacecraft on the far side of the moon. The Chang’ e 4 probe (探测器) has also made the first moon landing since 1972. It has the task of exploring the side of the moon that never faces the Earth. The dark side of the moon is older and has a thicker surface than the visible side. It takes the moon as long to go around on its own axis (轴) as it does for one complete orbit around the Earth.
The Chinese probe landed in a huge crater 2,500 km in diameter and 13 km in depth. The crater is one of the oldest parts of the moon and our solar system.
Scientists hope to learn more about the geology of the far side of the moon. The craft has two cameras on board which will send images back to the Earth. It will also try to send signals to distant regions of space, something that cannot happen on Earth because of too much radio noise.
Chang’ e 4 also has instruments on board to examine minerals as well as a container with seeds which will try to create a miniature (微型的) biosphere (生物圈).
Communication with the spacecraft is not easy. Images and other data must be transmitted to a separate satellite because no direct communication with the Earth is possible.
For China the Chang’ e 4 mission is an important achievement, because the country has successfully done something no other nation on Earth has done. It wants to become a leading power in space exploration and has announced plans to send astronauts to the moon and set up its own space station.
1.Where did the Chang’ e 4 probe land
A.On the side of the moon facing the Earth.
B.On the invisible side of the moon.
C.In a younger crater on the moon.
D.In a previous space station.
2.What can we learn from the text
A.The dark side of the moon is as cold as the other side.
B.The bright side is younger and thinner than the other side.
C.Other places in space may hardly receive signals from the craft.
D.The two cameras on the craft can send pictures to the Earth easily.

There was great excitement on the planet Venus this week. For the first time Venusian scientists managed to land a satellite on the planet Earth, and it has been sending back signals as well as pictures. The satellite was directed into an area known as Manhattan. Because of excellent weather conditions and extremely strong signals, Venusian scientists were able to get valuable information about the feasibility of a manned flying saucer (飞碟) landing on Earth. A meeting was held at the Venus Institute of Technology.
“We have come to the conclusion, based on last week’s satellite landing,” said Prof. Zog,“that there is no life on Earth.”
“How do you know this ” a science reporter of the Venus Evening News asked.
“For one thing, Earth’s surface in the area of Manhattan is made up of solid concrete and nothing can grow there. For another, the atmosphere is filled with carbon monoxide(一氧化碳) and other deadly gases and nobody could possibly breathe this air and survive.”
“Are there any other sources of danger that you have discovered in your studies ”
“Take a look at this photo. You see this dark black cloud staying over the surface of Earth We don’t know what it is made of, but it could give us a lot of trouble and we shall have to make further tests before we send a Venus being there. Over here you will notice what seems to be a river, but the satellite findings show it is polluted and the water is unfit to drink.”
“Sir, what are all those tiny black spots on the pictures ”
“We’re not certain. They seem to be metal particles that move along certain paths. They give out gases, make noise and keep crashing into each other.”
“Prof. Zog, why are we spending billions and billions of money landing a flying saucer on Earth when there is no life there ”
“Because if we Venusians can learn to breathe in the Earth’s atmosphere, then we can live anywhere.”

We used to believe there were nine planets, 1 now there are eight (Pluto is not a planet). Now we may have to change how many continents there are. We 2 (teach) there are seven—Asia, Africa, North and South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia. Geologists(地质学家)now say there is an 3 (eight) continent—Zealandia. This is a big, 4 (most) underwater landmass(大陆) in the Pacific Ocean. Six percent of it is 5 water and is New Zealand and New Caledonia. The rest 6 (be) under the ocean. It is five million square kilometres, 7 scientists say is big enough to be a continent.
Geologists argue that the land does not have to be above water to be a continent. They say Zealandia is a continent because of four 8 (point): It is a lot higher than the area around it, it has special geology(地质状况), it is easy to see its shape, and it is 9 (thick) than the ocean floor. It may take time for scientists 10 (agree) there are eight continents.

Looking up at the stars, people have always wanted to learn more about space, and scientists work hard to find answers. They make 1 (vehicle) to carry brave people into space to find out the secrets of the universe.
On 4 October 1957, the Sputnik 1 satellite 2 (launch)by the USSR and successfully orbited around Earth. Afterwards, the USSR focused on 3 (send) people into space, and on 12 April 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first person in the world 4 (go)into space. Over eight years later, on 20 July 1969, American astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon.
China’s space programme started later than those of Russia and the US, 5 it has made great progress in a short time. China became the third country in the world to 6 (independent) send humans into space in 2003, 7 Yang Liwei successfully orbited Earth in the Shenzhou 5 spacecraft. Then Shenzhou 6 and 7 completed a second manned orbit and the first Chinese spacewalk, 8 (follow)by the vehicle Jade Rabbit being sent to the moon to study its surface. After that, China launched the Tiangong 2 space lab into space and Tianzhou 1 to dock with it. This signalled one step 9 (far) in China’s plan to establish a space station 10 the future. More recently, China has sent Chang’ e 4 to explore the surface of the far side of the moon to make measurements and observations.
