For students in Mulan Primary School in Fuping County, Hebei Province, the past 18 years went by along with music, which was impossible for them before Deng Xiaolan became their music teacher. They have got a chance of singing on the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games. That might be the biggest stage in their life. The changes were because of Deng, who passed away at age 79 on March 21, 2022.
Deng’s father Deng Tuo, a famous reporter, used to work for the Jinchaji Daily during the 1940s in Malan. At that time Deng was born. However, her parents had to fight against the Japanese enemy so they could not stay with her and left her with local farmers until she was three. That was why Deng always regarded Malan as her second home.
In 2003, Malan Village welcomed back the special guest. This was when changes in Malan children’s life took place. Deng advised some local children to sing a song, but they could not sing anything. Feeling sad, she came up with an idea of teaching these kids to sing.
After retiring in 2004, Deng went back to Malan and volunteered as a music teacher in a local primary school. Two years later, she set up the first choir. In 2013, the first “Malan Music Festival” was held, and the festival has been held every year since then.
The team that was responsible for Beijing 2022 opening and closing ceremonies heard about Malan children’s story, and invited them to sing the Olympic Anthem. As Deng expected, her students showed their confidence on the Olympic stage. Their voices touched the world.
“Our mother spent most of her last 18 years in Malan. Being a volunteer music teacher brought her happiness and satisfaction,” Deng’s children said. “They performed well at the ceremonies of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games and were praised by the world. That made her very happy. She left the world on a high note. This is the biggest comfort for our family.”

Recently, a new planet was discovered, which is about 31 light years away. Scientists haven’t seen it in fact, but they’ve been able to calculate its size and weight by watching its influences on the star that it orbits. It appears that this planet is mainly made of iron.
“From our calculations, we find that this planet is smaller and lighter than Earth,” says Kristin e Lam, a planet researcher. “It could be similar to Mercury, which is also made of mostly iron.” The planet, known as “GJ 367 b”, orbits so close to its star. So it only takes about eight Earth hours to orbit its star.
Temperatures on the planet’s surface could reach about 1,500℃. “We can imagine this planet is probably like a molten planet. A lot of metals can start to melt on the planet. Perhaps it doesn’t have air on it, but at the moment we don’t know yet,” says Lam. “What we do know is that this planet has an interior similar to Mercury’s.”
This “strange” planet could teach us about how planets form. Scientists have found nearly 5,000 planets orbiting far stars in recent years. However, it’s unusual to find one that orbits its star in less than one Earth day.
It’s long been unclear why Mercury is especially iron-rich. “Nobody knows why
Mercury sticks out that way,” says Joshua Winn, a scientist at Princeton University. “It’s richer in iron than Venus or Earth or Mars.”
One story is that Mercury was hit by a large object early in its history. The hitting took away its outer layer, leaving the planet as a big iron core. But no one can be sure that such an event ever happened.
“It’s not clear yet if there’s a connection between this new planet and Mercury,” says Winn, “but it might help us understand how Mercury formed if we know how GJ 367 b formed.”
41.How can the scientists know the size of the new planet ( )
A.By watching it directly. B.By comparing it with Mercury.
C.By studying how it influences its star. D.By calculating the amount of iron on it.
42.What can we know about the new planet ( )
A.It orbits its star slowly. B.It is very hot on its surface.
C.It is heavier than Earth. D.It has been seen by scientists.
43.What do Mercury and the new planet have in common ( )
A.They have a similar interior. B.They formed in the same way.
C.They were hit by other planets. D.They orbit their star at the same speed.
44.Which planet has the largest amount of iron according to the passage ( )
A.Mars. B.Earth. C.Venus. D.Mercury.
45.The passage can be read in the part of “_______” in a newspaper.
A.Culture B.Environment C.Science D.Technology.

A famously strange house with a shark statue in the city of Oxford, England recently received official protection as a historic building. But, Magnus Hanson-Heine, the son of the man who built the artwork, was not happy about the special recognition.
The shark statue is 7.6 meters tall. The strange part is that it lies on the top of the Hanson-Heines’ house. It appears from the street as if the huge fish dove straight through the roof. Its head can’t be seen from the street, going into the roof.
Magnus’ late father, Bill, was an American who studied law at the University of Oxford and made the town his home. He created the shark statue in 1986 as a fight against wars. One night in April 1986, Bill heard American planes fly over his house. The next morning, he learned that the planes had been on their way to a war. So he got the idea and worked on the art project with his friend John Buckley.
Magnus called the local government’s decision “absurd”. His father, he explained, created the shark statue in secret at that time without getting permission from the local council because he strongly believed that the government had no right to decide what art people should see. So the council spent years trying to remove the statue. However, it now announced the shark statue historic and protected.
“The anti-war message that the shark statue has given is just as important today,” Magnus said, “as the people somewhere are still at war right now.” While that message is serious, the strange statue that rises over the normal street causes some fun and laughter as well. Especially when someone asks about the unseen head, laughing Magnus often says, “Maybe it crashed through to just above the toilet. That’s a secret.”

Many tourist attractions (景点) around the world are closed for the time due to COVID-19, but a group of penguins became a tour group when they visited an art museum.
The penguins are Humboldt penguins, which are native to Peru and Chile. They are from Kansas City Zoo in the USA.The zoo teamed up with the nearby Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Bosses of both the zoo and the art museum decided the penguins needed a change. They were getting lonely because the zoo s was closed due to COVID-19. They were used to seeing many visitors every day. A zoo official said, “The pandemic (大流行病) has caused everyone to go a little crazy, even the penguins of Kansas City Zoo. So the penguins should go on a field trip.”
The zoo’s manager, Randy Wisthoff, said, “We’re always looking for ways to stimulate their days. During this period, our animals really miss having visitors come out to see them. Their life should be more exciting.” The museum director joked that the penguins liked the art of Italian artists. He said, “They seem to react much better to Caravaggio than to Monet. We are so happy today to welcome our special friends and to see how they react to art.”
Animals in zoos around the world have been making the most of the peace and quiet. Wildlife Reserves Singapore, which owns and operates Singapore Zoo, said that its African penguins have been taken out for walks, and that they’re now allowed to explore new areas of Singapore Zoo. Even as the Omicron virus spreads, camel owners from many countries recently traveled to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). They brought with them 40,000 of their most beautiful camels for the Camel Beauty Contest at the Al Dhafra Festival, an event that celebrates desert culture.
The beauty of camels is decided by five judges (评委) based on their look in the contest. The top 10 winners can get prizes from $1,300 to $13,600.
One of the organizers, Mohammed Muhari, described what judges are looking for as hundreds of camels are being shown. “Necks must be long and thin, cheeks wide, hooves large and so on. Such are the most beautiful. The standards are not so different from those of a human beauty contest,” he said.
Some camel owners try to cheat. They use banned injections (注射剂) to change a camel’s look. So all camels will receive medical examinations before entering the contest. Spokesman Saleh said the number of cheaters has fallen. “We can easily catch them, and they realize it’s not worth the cost,” he said.
After the contest starts, for hours, judges study each camel, listing each one’s body parts for scoring purposes. Camel owners shout to surprise camels so they would look up and show off long necks. Finally, the winning camel owners are called to accept their prizes. Golden and silver-lined cloth is put on the winning camels’ heads.
The Camel Beauty Contest is not only a competition for prizes, but also the expression of traditional culture and custom. Gone are the days when camels were important for daily life in the country. However, people in UAE are increasingly searching for meaning in the past.
