World Environment Day is celebrated annually on June 5th and was created to inspire people around the globe to take an active part in environmental protection and learn more about ways we can help to guarantee the future of our planet is safe.
The very first World Environment Day took place in 1974,established by the United Nations General Assembly on the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment that took place in 1972.Each year the United Nations pick a theme and a host city where anyone who is concerned about the environment can talk about environmental topics with others, followed by different kinds of exhibits to promote environmental awareness.Environmentalists, academics and scientists come together to bring new ideas on the table concerning the environment.
The 2018 World Environment Day is hosted by India, and the theme is Beat Plastic Pollution. It urges people to explore and choose supportable alternatives like paper or cloth bags to reduce the production and use of disposable plastic, which makes up 10% of all of the waste.Even though the United Nations pick a specific host city every year, people around the world still celebrate World Environment Day in their hometowns with parades(游行),concerts, cleaning up and tree planting and all kinds of green actions to work towards having a beautiful planet and battling pollution.
World Environment Day is not a public holiday,so you won’t be getting the day off work or school, but if you want to celebrate, why not bring it to the attention of your parents, friends, colleagues or classmates World Environment Day is all about working together to take action for the planet,so try to get everyone you know interested in helping do something.Things as small as making sure people have a way to recycle can make a difference. You could also try beautifying your neighbourhood by planting gardens, learn about green foods, raise money for a local wildlife conservation group or simply learn about the effects of different products on the earth.

Various animals are respected and even worshipped(崇拜) in different cultures. In Hinduism, for example, cows are valued for their gentle nature. However,in ancient Egypt, crocodiles(鳄鱼) were regarded as living representations of the god Sobek.
During the serious drought in the 15th century, the Mossi were led to an undiscovered pond by the crocodiles. This not only allowed the Mossi to survive, but also led to the founding of the village Bazoulé.
As the villagers owe their survival to the crocodiles, they now care for and live side by side with them. The villagers even bury the crocodiles and hold funerals for them after their death. The crocodiles are not only regarded as protectors of Bazoulé,but also fortune-tellers that give best wishes to the villagers. It seems that the worship of the crocodiles has paid off.For over 70 years, there has never been a death from a crocodile attack in Bazoulé.It’s normal for women to wash their clothes in the water and gather plants nearby. And it is also normal to see children playing around the water where the crocodiles live.
Naturally, this strange relationship between the villagers and crocodiles has attracted a lot of attention.Tourists from all over the world come to the village, hoping to catch sight of this unlikely bond between humans and crocodiles.Visitors have the opportunity to buy a chicken, with which they can attract the crocodiles out of the water. You can pose for pictures, and if you’re brave enough, you can sit on a crocodile’s back just like the local children usually do.
The village is trying to develop its tourism, but unfortunately,it was found to be threatened by global warming.Lower annual rainfall means that the pond will vanish one day.Perhaps the legends are true, and when this happens, the crocodiles will lead the Mossi to a new water source.
32.Why were the Mossi so grateful to the crocodiles
A.They never did harm to the Mossi.
B.They once happened to help the Mossi.

Once, when I was a teenager,my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. Finally there was only one family between the ticket counter and us.
This family made a big impression on me.There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money.Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean, the children were well-behaved,all of them standing in line,two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice. One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be a highlight of their young lives.
The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as they could be.The mother was holding her husband’s hand, looking up at him as if to say,“You are my knight in shining armor.” He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say “You got that right”.The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded “please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.”
The ticket lady gave the price. The man’s wife let go of his hand, lowered her head and her lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked,“How much did you say ” The ticket lady again told him the price. The man obviously didn’t have enough money.
How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus Actually we were not wealthy in any sense,so I understand how the kids would feel.I felt sorry for them.

C.They led the Mossi back to their homes.
D.They provided clean drinking water for the Mossi.
答案B

B.Thevillagersgetalongwellwiththecrocodiles.

34.Whatdoestheunderlinedword“vanish”inthelastparagraphmean
A.Move. B.Freeze.
C.Narrow. D.Disappear.
答案D
解析词义猜测题。根据画线词前面说降雨量减少,后面说鳄鱼可能会带领人们找新的水源可推测,池塘可能会消失。move“移动”;freeze“结冰”;narrow“缩小”;disappear“消失”。故选D项。

Dear Mayor,
There are wetlands in our hometown. And every spring, many birds come to live here, including several rare and endangered ones. With various birds everywhere, the hometown looks very beautiful. However, the birds are being badly affected by our human activities.
The harm to the birds is various.Eggs are often picked up.Worse still, people even catch or poison birds for meat. The size of the wetlands is becoming smaller and smaller due to farming.Pollution from chemical factories is also a big problem.Fewer birds arrive here each year.
I strongly suggest taking action to save the birds.A wetland reserve should be set up to make sure no one shall harm the birds. We human beings should live with birds peacefully and happily.
Yours,
Li Hua

Animals are natural resources that people have wasted all through our history.
Animals have been killed for their fur and feathers, for food, for sport, and simply because they were in the way.Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the world forever.Hundreds more are on the danger list today.About 170 kinds in the United States alone are considered in danger.
Why should people care Because we need animals. And because once they are gone, there will never be any more.
Animals are more than beautiful or interesting or a source of food.Every animal has its place in the balance of nature.Destroying one kind of animal can create many problems.
For example, when farmers killed large numbers of hawks(鹰),the farmers’ stores of corn and grain were destroyed by mice. Why Because hawks eat mice. With no hawks to keep down their numbers, the mice multiplied quickly.
Luckily, some people are working to help save the animals. Some groups raise money to let people know about the problem. And they try to get the governments to pass laws protecting animals in danger.
Quite a few countries have passed laws. These laws forbid the killing of any animals or plants on the danger list.Slowly, the number of some animals in danger is growing.

The loneliest chimpanzee(黑猩猩) in the world just got the best surprise—a hug from a new friend.Ponso has been by himself for about four years, finding himself alone after his wife and children died on the island where they were abandoned by a medical testing company many years ago.
For years a nearby villager named Germain has been Ponso’s only company, visiting him so often to bring bananas and bread—the chimpanzee’s only source of food on the tiny island. It was clear how much Ponso missed companionship when he was recently visited by Chimpanzee Conservation Centre Director Estelle Raballand. The chimpanzee immediately embraced Estelle Raballand in a huge hug and laughed as she reached out for him, with his smile from ear to ear.
For those who know Ponso’s backstory, his immediate ease and trust in humans might be surprising.Ponso was one of 20 chimpanzees, all between the ages of 7 to 11 years old, relocated to an island off the Ivory Coast after being used for testing by the New York Blood Centre. After the tests were completed in 2005,the lab reportedly transferred the chimpanzees to a string of islands, occasionally dropping off food and water because there was none in the chimpanzees’ new homes.
Disease and hunger soon left only Ponso, his mate and their two children standing. But at the end of 2013 they died within days of each other and Ponso was now completely alone.
A group called SOS PONSO is trying to raise money for the poor lonely chimpanzee, already achieving its goal of $20,000—all of which will be used for Ponso’s care.

A group of American tigers in a swampy(沼泽的)area of Brazil eat more fish than land animals, and are happy to socialise and play together, according to a new study. They are the first wild American tigers known to feed on large amounts of fish.
Researchers from Oregon State University in the US,with Brazilian colleagues studied a population of wild American tigers in the Brazilian Pantanal,a low-lying region of Brazil where water runs off nearby mountains to create swamps. It’s the world’s largest freshwater wetland habitat, but wildlife there can be difficult to study with few roads. Therefore, researchers set up cameras to film anything walking by.They also put tracking devices on 13 random American tigers.
Over 1,500 videos were gathered showing 69 individual American tigers. They are strong swimmers and the videos showed them eating lots of fish. They also ate reptiles living in the water, such as lizards. The analysis of 138 American tiger scats(粪便)also found they mostly contained bones of fish and reptiles living in the water—only 11% had mammal remains. This is surprising because mammals such as deer and monkeys form the main part of American tigers’ diets in other places.Even tigers in India’s wetlands eat mostly land-based mammals.
The cameras also delivered other surprises.American tigers usually enjoy being alone, only coming together to fight over territory, but the video showed two adult males playing, fishing and traveling together—a kind of behaviour that had never been seen before.Charlotte Eriksson, who led the study, thinks it possible if the wetlands provide adequate fish.
32.In what way did the scientists conduct the research

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother.Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat,but it was not even possible for her, since she had nothing with her.She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle—aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked,“Hey,girl, you want to have the noodles ”
“Oh,yes...but I don’t have money on me...” she replied.
“That’s nothing.I’ll treat you today,” said the man,“come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating,Jenny cried silently.
“What is it ” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears.“Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother, drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me.She is so merciless compared to a stranger!!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled,“Girl,do you really think so I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot.But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you Have you expressed your gratitude to her ”
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock;she remembered mother’s familiar face and weathered hands.“Why did I not think of that A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”
On the way home,Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I think Picture No.18 is the best choice for this year’s World Animal Day.In the picture we can see a bear and a hunter are on the seesaw. The hunter is aiming at the fearful bear.He is ready to shoot.Actually,if the hunter really shoots, not only the bear but the hunter will also fall down, hurting himself.
From the picture we can clearly see that both animals and human beings are in the same boat.If animals are destroyed,so are the human beings. On the contrary,if human beings and animals can live harmoniously,we will enjoy a peaceful world.
The picture is very simple, but the story is shocking. The message is instructive.Once seen,it can never be easily forgotten. It can arouse the public’s awareness of animal protection.
Thank you for your patience to read my letter.Hope you can choose the picture for this year’s World Animal Day.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
