In the summer between my first year and second year in college,I was invited to be an instructor at a high school camp.On the first day, when we were dancing and playing games,I noticed a boy under the tree who was small and thin. His shyness made him appear weak.I walked towards him, introduced myself and invited him to join in the activities and meet some new people. He quietly replied,“No,I really don’t want to do this.” I could understand that he was in a new world but I knew it wouldn’t be right to force him, either.Actually, the boy didn’t need a close talk but a friend.
At lunch the next day,I was leading camp songs when I saw the boy under the tree sitting alone.I tried again with the same invitation, but he refused once again. That evening I was told the boy’s name was Tommy. Then I asked the campers to pay special attention to the boy and spend more time with him.
The days went by and the time came when we had to leave. We held a big, warm party to celebrate the closing of the camp. All the campers shared their wonderful moments. To my surprise,I found the boy from under the tree dancing joyfully with two students.
In October of my second year,I received a phone call from Tommy’s mother. She told me that Tommy was hit by a car and killed.I offered my deep sadness. The mother said,“Tommy mentioned you so many times.I want you to know that he went back to school and made new friends with confidence. You made a difference for Tommy.”

MumandHerBankAccount
My family had the tradition to sit down by the kitchen table every Saturday night to count out the money Dad had brought home.
“These are for the rent, and those for the groceries.” Mum counted out and divided the big silver pieces.
“I’ll need a notebook.” That would be my sister Christine,my brother Nels or me.
After Mum put one or two coins to the side for the notebook, she said that was all we needed to buy for the week and we all relaxed a little. We didn’t have to go downtown and draw money out of Mum’s bank account, which could always give us such a warm and secure feeling for having enough to afford the life.
When Nels graduated from grammar school,he needed some money for high school. We sat by the table and I offered my “Little Bank”,which was used for sudden emergencies such as the time when Christine broke her arm and had to see a doctor.I put the box carefully in front of Mum.After counting out the money in the little bank and finding that was not enough,we all agreed not to go to the bank but to find some ways.
Nels volunteered to work in Dillon’s grocery after school and Dad said he would give up smoking. Now there was enough money. We felt very happy.
So many things came out of the little bank that year:Christine’s dress for the school play,Nel’s operation...Whatever happened,we always knew we still had the bank to depend on.We never used her bank account.
That was twenty years ago.
Last year,I sold my first story. When the money came I thought of Mum’s bank account.
SoIhurriedovertoherhome.

Knowingthattherewasnobankaccountatall,Ifeltverysurprised.

A 99-year-old woman and a high school student in British Columbia have formed a wonderful friendship through a programme that connects seniors with young people.
Myrtle MacDonald,99,says she signed up for the local programme after feeling lonely because her daughter and son couldn’t keep her company. She was paired(结对子) with Jaelyn Brown,17,based on their common interest — nursing.“I just found her more interested and less in a hurry than I expected. It has filled an empty spot,” said MacDonald.
For the high school students taking part, the time spent with seniors can be used towards volunteer hours needed for graduation. They’re supposed to speak for 30 minutes each week, but many go far beyond that.“I love and look forward to getting to talk to her every week.We talk about an hour and 15 minutes, and the time just goes by so quickly,” said Brown.
MacDonald,a former nurse, spent much of her life teaching and living in other parts of the world helping people in need. The stories are inspiring to Brown, who also wants to become a nurse.“In high school they usually say you go to school, you get a job,and you have kids. It’s a regular practice but talking to her has made me realise I don’t have to limit myself to one thing.I can have it all,” she said.
The programme has been a good fortune to both seniors and high school students.Due to various reasons, seniors can’t meet with their families and students are having trouble getting their volunteer hours.“Therefore, there’s been a huge positive response from them,” said the programme’s organiser Connie Stam.

Katie had always felt like she never connected with anyone. There was no one she considered a friend. So,when her parents decided to move, she was okay with it.She didn’t feel sad because she wasn’t leaving anyone behind.
She was eight when they moved to a new town.It wasn’t that different from where they had lived before. There were a lot of trees and kids running around outside, riding bikes, and playing. One day her mother caught her staring out the window at some kids playing. Her mom told her to go out and play with those kids.So Katie went out.She could see that they were all having fun and she wanted to join in but she was afraid. She tried to muster up the courage(鼓起勇气) to ask them if she could join them but she just couldn’t do it.
She decided to go for a walk instead. She liked how peaceful the town was.The people seemed nice and polite. Her stroll finally led her to the town’s lake. She felt the rush of cold air hitting her face. The beauty of the lake was something to behold. She sat there admiring it and decided that this would be her place. She would come here every day and maybe one day,she would bring her friends here.
After school, she always stopped by the lake before going home. She swore she could stay there for hours, maybe even live there. If she ever got hungry, she always had food ready in her bag.
One day when she was writing a poem about the lake, she heard her stomach growl. She put down her notebook and her pen and got her sandwich out.She was about to take a bite when she heard a noise. This alarmed her.She hadn’t heard or seen anything strange before. She looked around and suddenly she noticed that there was something black moving towards the bank.
