Music is not just a set of sounds and rhythms. Its influence on the brain is much deeper than any other human experience. Keep on reading to know all those amazing powers of music.
A recent study suggests that preterm (早产的) babies appear to experience less pain and feed more when listening to music. Experts led by Dr. Manoj Kumar of the University of Alberta, Canada, found that music had a beneficial effect on reducing pain for preterm babies experiencing painful medical tests. It also appeared to benefit full term babies during operations.
Many people experiencing brain damage have speech and movement related problems. Music can help recover from brain injuries. As a different and effective treatment, doctors often advise such patients to listen to good music to improve the parts of the brain responsible for these two functions. When people with neurological (神经的) disorders hear a musical beat, it helps them to regain a balanced walk.
Though music cannot make deafness disappear, it really can _stave_off the loss of hearing. There was an experiment involving 163 people where 74 were musicians. Participants were asked to pass some listening tests. Musicians heard the sounds better than non musicians, and this difference gets clearer with age. This means that a 70 year old musician hears better than a 50 year old non musician, even in a noisy environment.
Besides, music mends a broken heart. It is not about a thrown away love, but about a heart attack. The matter is that music can help people recover from a heart attack or heart operation by reducing blood pressure, slowing down the heartbeat rate, and reducing anxiety. Listening to the quality music produces positive emotions, improves the movement of blood, and expands blood vessels, thus, promoting quick recovery of the whole cardiovascular (心血管的) system.

4.What may be the best title for the text

Lightning(闪电) strikes more than eight million times a day worldwide. That’s about 93 times per second. What a phenomenon!
How hot is a lightning bolt About 50, 000°F-five times hotter than the surface of the sun. Yes, it really can rain frogs, fish, and other decidedly odd things. It’s a rare meteorological(气象学的) event, but scientists say strong winds from a tornado or from a storm can be powerful enough to drive animals and objects high into the air, and they have to comedown eventually.
It is a bad idea to take a shower during a thunderstorm. If lightning hits your house, it can travel through your plumbing(管道设备) and shock anyone who comes into contact with water flowing through it. People have been shocked or killed while bathing, washing dishes and clothes. This is also why indoor pools often close during storms. Rubber tires are not what protect you from lightning when you’re in your car. You’re protected because when lightning hits a car, it travels around the outside of the metal structure to get to the ground. Just be careful not to touch any metal areas inside.
Lightning can strike the same place twice—and it often does, especially objects that are tall, pointy, and separated. The Empire State Building, for example, is hit almost 100 times a year, according to the CDC.
You can be struck by lightning even when it’s no training. About 10 percent of lightning strikes take place when there’s no rainfall. In the 1980s, NASA flew one airplane through 1.496 thunderstorms. It was struck by lightning more than 700 times. Today, a commercial airplane will be hit by lightning about once a year on average, typically with no ill effects. It has been decades since a U.S. airliner has crashed as a result of a lightning strike.
To deal with such a frequent phenomenon, every day, twice a day, weather trackers, at the same time, launch giant balloons from almost 900 locations worldwide. The balloons measure above ground weather data such as temperature, humidity(湿气), and wind speed, and they provide vital information that meteorologists use to make forecasts and predict lightning.
5.What can lightning lead to according to the text
A.Burning everything. B.Raining animals.
C.Shocking everybody outdoors. D.Hitting an object for once.
6.What is the right thing to do during a lightning strike
A.Take abath at home. B.Swim in a pool.
C.Avoid metal things. D.Stand under at all tree.
7.What can be inferred from the text
A.No sign of rainfall means no lightning.
B.Efforts have been made to keep aircraft safe.
C.Commercial planes can escape lightning hits.
D.The Empire State Building faces most lightning strikes.
8.What reduces the damage of a lightning strike
A.Lightning location. B.Measurement balloons.
C.Changing wind direction. D.Weather forecast and prediction.

It was in my first year of work as a doctor. My mouth was dry, my hands shaking and my voice trembling. The only thing that kept me focused was the thought that things were so much worse for the family I was talking to.
A woman in her early twenties had been brought in after a road traffic accident. She had suffered multiple injuries and had been rushed up to hospital. The doctors had been unable to save her life and she died on the table. Ashen-faced, the consultant (会诊医生) told the woman’s family the news. “Tom, I think it would be nice if it came from you.” my consultant said.
I stared blankly. “What ” I asked.
“About organ donation (器官捐献).” he replied. Surely this would be the last thing they’d want to talk about. It felt worse to be considering this kind of conversation while they were being engulfed (陷入) in sadness. But the problem with organ donations that every minute counts. The clock is ticking because the sooner organs can be transplanted (移植), the better the chance they will survive in the recipient’s (接受者) body.
I began to feel sick. I opened the door and sat opposite them, made sure that I was only going to make things worse for them. “It’s what she’d have wanted.” the mother said before I’d even finished. The father nodded. “She was always so generous.” her father added.
As my consultant and I left them, it occurred to me that I’d been wrong in thinking it would be an awkward conversation. Nothing could take away the pain of having lost their daughter. Yet this last, final act had comforted them and helped them feel that the spirit of their daughter lived on in this act of generosity. Strangely, it is one of the most heart-warming conversations I have ever had.

A. it was hard for the author to face death
B. the author has worked for more than 2 years
C. the author witnessed the traffic accident
D the bad news was not told at last

B. He was seriously ill at that time.

A. To help the author.
B. To follow the daughter’s will.
C. To show respect for the doctor.
D. To finish the conversation.

A. The recipient’s thanks.
B. The author’s illness.

My challenge for you is this: to read a book for 15 minutes every single day for a month.
Let me explain a bit, by telling you where the challenge came from. I have many things in common with my dad, like music taste and sense of humor, but sadly reading isn't one of them. I can happily spend a whole day with a book, but my dad can't read a book for longer than about 5 minutes. He reads emails, websites and papers for work, but not books. He's busy, so I think sitting down to read for just 15 minutes a day is a good way to relax and to introduce him to reading.
My dad is not the only person who avoids books. I know lots of people would rather relax on their computers.or in front of the TV. Everyone is different and has their own interests, but I think there are lots of benefits to reading, which screen-based activities don't have.
Firstly, it's better for your eyes. Looking at screens can be very stressful for your eye muscles, and clearly you should avoid looking at screens for an hour before bed, to get a good night's sleep.
One thing I personally love reading, is being transported to another world-I often forget the time or things around me! Reading is a great way to switch off before you go to bed, because you think more about the world of the book, rather than the real world, so you can truly relax. I know you can be transported to a different world in a film or a TV show, but I think books do it better.
I also enjoy hearing what people are doing and finding out what they think. Reading gives me the chance to get to know hundreds of new people! It also teaches you to see things from other people's point of view, and understand other people's decisions or opinions. With a book, you can hear everything a character is thinking or feeling-you really can be inside someone else's head!
So give it a go! Take 15 minutes when you are waking up, going to bed, eating lunch, or having a coffee. If you read a lot, why not try 15 minutes of an English book, or pass the challenge on to someone else Good luck, and happy reading!

A.helping readers sleep well
B.making readers feel relaxed
C.transporting readers to a different world

16.What is the author's attitude to reading
A.Negative. B.Uncertain.

二、短文七选五:
Sandstorms are among the most violent natural disasters. High winds lift dirt or sand into the air, causing damage, injuries, and deaths. 1
2 If you have a mask, put it on immediately. If you don’t have one, wrap a piece of cloth tightly around your head to protect your nose and mouth.
Look for shelter (避难所). Even a parked car will do, so long as it is off the road and not in danger of getting hit. Sand will fly around when it hits objects. 3 If you cannot get to shelter, try to stay low to the ground and protect your head with your arms, a backpack or a pillow.
Protect yourself from flying objects. Look for a large rock to cover as much of your body as possible. 4 Flying sand can hurt, but a dust storm’s high winds can also carry heavier (more dangerous) objects.
Wait out the storm. 5 It’s much too dangerous. Stay where you are and wait for it to pass before you attempt to move to a different location. If you can quickly reach such shelter before a dust storm reaches you, get there as quickly as possible and stay inside. Close all windows and doors, and wait out the storm.
A.Cover your nose and mouth.
B.Wait other people to help you.
C.Staying out is a better choice.
D.Don’t try to move through the storm.
E.This can protect you from flying sand.
F.So you should still try to cover as much of your skin and face as possible.
G.It’s good to know what to do if you see a wall of sand.

第二节:阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Cats are a mysterious kind of animal—there is more passing in their minds than we know of. I can't agree more with this because of my recent experience.
It was the Sunday before Labor Day, and I was tired after spending the day at a picnic in a relative's garden. I looked out of the window before climbing onto bed. Stars filled the night sky, and crickets(蟋蟀) gently sang in the darkness. All seemed right with the world.
My big, old black and white cat, Oreo, lay at the foot of the bed where he slept every night, keeping my feet warm. I climbed onto bed and immediately fell into a deep sleep.
I had just fallen asleep when Oreo woke me up by walking over my stomach. I looked at the bedside clock: 3:10 am. I had no idea why Oreo was troubling me. He'd never done that before unless I overslept in the morning, but that usually happened at 8:00 am, not in the middle of the night.
I pushed Oreo off me, rolled over and pulled the blanket (毯子) over my head. But Oreo didn't stop. He stepped on my head and began to make noises loudly.
“Oreo,” I said. “Go back to sleep.”
But Oreo wouldn't stop. He kept walking on my stomach and legs, continuing to trouble me. Suddenly, there was a crash of thunder(雷), and I sat up on the bed and looked out of the window. Lightning filled the sky. Strong winds blew through the window. Rain started to come down hard, making it almost impossible to see the trees in the yard. Soon the wind was picking up and the branches of the trees were moving violently(强烈地). A terrible storm had started.
Seeing the sight, I was struck with horror. Thinking that it was not safe to stay in the house, I climbed out of bed, put on my clothes, and held Oreo in my arms.
