第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
This idea is mean(刻薄的).Children need to have a good holiday at the end of a busy school year. The long holidays give them time to do things they wouldn’t otherwise(不然) get to do.In my family we go to Ireland and see relatives and friends during the summer vacation. And it might seem long to some people, but time flies when you’re having fun.
—RubyMullin
I have good memories(记忆) of my own long summer holidays, and I love the chance to have days out with my son.I think many parents, especially single parents like me,have made job choices based on being able to have time off for the summer—and now we’ve done that,we don’t want to see things changed.
—VikiBantock
Having worked at a school that had a four-week summer break instead of the usual six,I’d say longer holidays are better.Teachers are under so much pressure(压力) now to get good results;most put in lots of hours in the evening and at weekends and feel very tired by the end of term. There is a dip(退步) in learning after a six-week holiday, but it only takes a few weeks for students to get back up to speed.
—MarekKaminski
A shorter summer holiday would be much better. The six-week break seems a thing for another age, when mothers didn’t work and your mum lived round the corner to give you a hand.If I were able to take a six-week holiday, great,I’d love it—but in the real world that isn’t possible.Instead,I end up spending around £600 on childcare for each week when I’m working.
—NachelleCrowther

It’s school time again! You’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little afraid on the first day of school because of all the new things:new teachers, new friends, and even a new school.Luckily, these “new” worries only stay for a little while.Let’s find out more about going to a new school.
Most teachers kick off the new school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the things you’ll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class, too. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules and school rules so you’ll know what’s allowed and what’s not. Please pay close attention.
You might already know a lot of people in your class on the first day,but it’s a great day to make new friends,so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don’t.Make the first move and you’ll be glad you did,and so will your new friends!
Seeing old friends can make the first day an exciting one.You can make the day special by wearing clothes that you really like.Maybe you got a great T-shirt on one of your vacations,or a pair of shoes.
It also can make you feel good to be prepared and have all the things you need, such as pencils, folders, and whatever else you’ll be needing. But make sure that you pack them the night before in case you don’t have time in the morning.

Luckily,my best friends came to my aid. What they said to me was one of the kindest words anyone has ever said.I will never forget what one of them said:“You are so beautiful because of your heart and mind. You have more kindness than anyone else.I saw how much that dance meant to you, especially how it connected with your memories. It made me cry,and you were so incredible.”

Once upon a time,in a village far away, there lived six blind men.
One day,the other villagers were very excited. The blind men felt surprised and asked what was happening. The villagers told them,“Hey,we have good news. There is an elephant in the village today!”
The villagers’ words left the blind men in shock because they had no idea what an elephant was.And then they decided,“Even though we will not be able to see it,we can feel it.Let’s go.”So,they all went to where the elephant was. They were as excited as the other villagers. Each of them touched it and expressed their views:
“Hey,the elephant is a pillar(柱子),”said the first man, touching its leg.
“Oh,no!It is like a rope,”said the second man,who was touching the tail.
“Oh,no!It is like the branch(树枝) of a tree,”said the third man, touching the ivory(象牙) of the elephant.
“It is like a big hand fan,”said the fourth man,who was touching its ear.
“It is like a huge wall,”said the fifth man, touching the side of the elephant.
“It is like a pipe,”said the sixth man, touching the nose of the elephant.
They began to argue about what the elephant was like, and each of them thought that he was right. They had been fellow sufferers, but now it looked as if they were enemies.
They were getting angry, and they were about to fight when a wise man,who had come to see the elephant, asked what the matter was.
They answered,“We cannot agree with each other on what this elephant looks like.”And then each of them told the wise man what he thought the elephant was like.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

Whatdowelearnfromthestory The lesson from the story is that even if you don’t agree with someone, there may be some truth to what they say.Sometimes we can see that truth and sometimes we can’t because they have different opinions.Instead of quarrelling like the blind men,we should realise that they have their own experiences. If we can accept this,we are less likely to argue with others.WELCOME UNIT单元过关检测(B卷)

You’d be surprised to see what your handwriting says about you.Did you know shy, introverted(内向的) types prefer to write small, and brave, extroverted types are likely to write in large letters If you have average-sized writing,it shows a strong ability to focus and concentrate.
People who leave large spaces between their words enjoy freedom and independence, while those who write their words together are likely to enjoy the company of others. If your words are totally crowded, you might affect someone’s private life in an unwanted and annoying way.
While a very heavy pen pressure can suggest nervousness and anger;a proper heavy pressure is a sign of responsibility.A soft pressure means you’re shy and quiet;you might also lack energy, according to one National Pen Company study.
If you dot(加点) your “i” high on the page, you likely have an active imagination.A closely dotted “i” is the mark of an organised and detail-oriented(注重细节的) mind.If you dot your “i” to the left, you might be a procrastinator(拖延者).And if you dot your “i” with a circle, you likely have playful and childlike qualities.
Whether or not your words are rounded or pointed also plays a role in what your handwriting says about you.Pointed letters are a sign of an intelligent person and rounded letters signal creativity and artistic ability.
If you write quickly,it’s highly likely that you’re impatient and dislike wasting time.If you take your time getting your words down, you are independent and methodical(有条理的).
According to The Pen Warehouse,if you connect your letters when you’re writing,it might mean you’re very reasonable and most of your decisions are based on facts and experience. If your letters are disconnected, you might be more imaginative and make your decisions by your feelings.

Many of us live with a roommate at some stage.Sometimes, there can be problems.Who hasn’t had an argument about whose turn it is to take out the rubbish or who should be the one to clear up after dinner However, living with another person also comes with many benefits.
You know that there’s always someone else around, which can help you feel safer. There is always someone to talk to,so you never feel lonely.Besides these obvious benefits, there are some you may not notice. For example,we’re actually more likely to eat healthier food when living with others.
To examine the effect of living alone,Australian university researchers did much research and found that people living alone tended to eat less fresh food, which can have a significant negative effect on long-term health. However, those living with others generally benefited from a more varied diet compared to those living alone.
What could explain these findings The researchers believe the social and cultural roles played by cooking, food preparation and eating may be important considerations. For example, those living with friends have someone else to go shopping with, and thus are likely to buy higher-quality fresh food regularly.
Cooking skills may be another factor. If people living alone find they do not have the knowledge required to prepare a particular dish or cook a certain food, they may fall back on ready-made,less healthy food. However,if they live with at least one other person, they may be able to ask for help.
In addition, people living alone can eat whatever they want at any time of the day or night. However,it’s helpful to have someone around who questions your decision to eat frozen pizza at 3 a.m.In other words, roommates can draw your attention to unhealthy routines.
So,if you now live alone and find yourself fighting a losing battle against poor eating habits, why not consider sharing a home with someone else You could encourage one another to be healthier.

One day when I was 12,my mother gave me an order:I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more weapon of hers to defeat my strange problem,my inability to read.
In the library,I found my way into the “Children’s Room”.I sat down on the floor and pulled a few books off the shelf at random. The cover of a book caught my eye.It presented a picture of a beagle(小猎兔狗).I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was my secret sharer, but one morning,he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him.I never forgot my beagle.
There on the book’s cover was a beagle which looked identical to my dog.I ran my fingers over the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the title,“Amos, the Beagle with a Plan.”Unknowingly,I had read the title.Without opening the book,I borrowed it from the library for the summer.
Under the shade of a bush,I started to read about Amos.I read very, very slowly with difficulty.Though pages were turned slowly,I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog,and I was the little boy in the book.At the end of the story my mind continued to the final scene of reunion,on and on,until my own lost dog and I were,in my mind, running together.

Have you ever been sad because of failure Please remember, for quite often achieving what you set out to do is not the most important thing.
A boy decided to dig a deep hole behind his house. As he was working,a couple of older boys stopped by to watch.“What are you doing ” asked one of the visitors.“I want to dig a hole all the way through the earth!”the boy answered excitedly. The older boys began to laugh, telling him that digging a hole all the way through the earth was impossible. After a while, the boy picked up a jar.He showed it to the visitors. It was full of all kinds of stones and insects. Then he said calmly and confidently,“Maybe I can’t finish digging all the way through the earth, but look at what I’ve found during this period!”
The boy’s goal was far too difficult, but it did cause him to go on.And that is what a goal is for—to cause us to move in the direction we have chosen,in other words,to cause us to keep working!
Not every goal will be fully achieved. Not every job will end up with success. Not every dream will come true. But when you fall short of your aim, maybe you can say,“Yes,but look at what I’ve found along the way! There are so many wonderful things having come into my life because I tried to do something!” It is in the digging that life is lived. It is the unexpected joy on the journey that really makes sense.

The trick of reading is to put yourself into the story experiencing what the author goes through and appreciating its meaning in your heart. As long as I clung to this process, not only was my inability to read defeated, but also an inner aspiration to read was stimulated, which changed my life for the better.During the summer,I incredibly developed a special companionship with books, ranging from vivid storybooks to academic articles. My mother was more than delighted to see my change.
Andyearslater, shewasproudthathersonhadreadthousandsofbooks, andwasawardedaPhDinliterature. She proposed that my experience should be of magnificent use to others. So I set up a team to provide those who had difficulty reading with space to turn to,through which I myself also gained a better understanding of reading as well as my life.My first adventure of reading turned out to be a permanent treasure.
