Painkillers(止痛药)are turning out to be a real pain, according to a new study in the British Medical Journal. Taking them for just a week can increase your risk of a heart attack by 50%. The research suggested that the risk related to the use of certain drugs was greatest with higher doses(剂量)and during the first month of use. The potential risk may increase by 75% for medicines like ibuprofen(布洛芬)and naproxen(萘普生), and more than 100% for rofecoxib(罗非昔布).
It all sounds bad but your risk is very low—one in a million. A 100% increase means you still only have a two-in-a-million chance. Of course, all painkilling medications that work can have side effects—nothing is safe and effective. Paracetamol(扑热息痛)has very few unless taken too much, in which case it can cause serious liver danger, but it isn't very effective. Drugs like opiates are strong painkillers but easy to be addicted to and often have other bad effects. Maybe you find that you are in a dilemma now. But don't despair; you can refer to a pain clinic for some professional guidance. For ongoing pain, music and exercise may be the best choices to help you reduce the feeling of it.
Scientists at Harvard have recently done a quite horrible study on mice. They made the mice experience extremes of hot and cold, applied pressure to their back legs and injected the capsaicin(辣椒素)into their feet. And then they timed how long it took them to respond to the pain. Lack of sleep increased the discomfort, while stimulants(兴奋剂)such as caffeine made them less responsive to pain. It has been widely reported that a good night's sleep and a cup of coffee in the morning may help reduce pain. But anyway, don't throw the pills away because the study also shows taking small doses of drugs in short periods of time can be effective and safe as long as your heart is in good condition.

C.Rofecoxib. D.Paracetamol.

A.Take it seriously. B.Take any risk.

If approaching the victim will endanger your life, seek professional help immediately. 3 First aid becomes useless if you can't safely perform it without hurting yourself.
Call for help. 4 If someone is with you or approaches, instruct him to call the authorities and be prepared to inform them of the situation so they can update the responders. It is not recommended that you leave the victim unless absolutely required, but put them in the recovery position if you need to leave them for any reason.
5 Taking good care of someone who has just gone through serious trauma(创伤)includes both physical treatment and spiritual support: Remember to stay calm and try to be reassuring (使人安心的); let the person know that help is on its way and that everything will be all right. In daily life, there are some emergencies that you might have to deal with one day. Learn to handle the emergencies below for yourself, your family and friends.
Sudden heart attack
Having CPR training is the life-saving help for someone having a heart attack. Move the patient's head back and look for breathing. If the patient doesn't take a breath in less than 10 seconds, start CPR. Push on the chest. Put your hands on the center of the chest. Push hard and fast—about twice per second. Push on the chest 30 times and then give 2 mouth-to-mouth. Repeat cycles of 30 presses and 2 mouth-to-mouth until the help arrives or the patient wakes up.
Choke
Stand behind the choking person. Put your arms around the waist and bend him or her slightly forward so that the object blocking the airway will move out of the mouth. Do this up to five times. You can also do back blows—firmly slap the person on the back with your hand while he or she is bent over. If the object still doesn't come out, call 120.
Nosebleed
Ask the person to lean forward and pinch(捏) his nose for five to six minutes. Do not move the head backward, as the blood may run into his mouth or even his lungs.
Encourage the person not to speak, swallow, cough or spit because these may break blood clots(血块) that may have started to form in the nose. If the bleeding lasts more than 30 minutes, call 120 for medical help.
Burn
Burns should be treated by an adult—the injured area should be put in cool water for 10 to 15 minutes to relieve the pain. Ice should never be used, as it can make the injury even worse. If a child has a serious burn, he or she should be taken to a doctor or the emergency room.

A woman who had a stroke(中风)while on a FaceTime video call with her sister said the technology saved her life. Esmee Russell, head of the Stroke Association, said, “A stroke can happen to anyone, at any age, and at any time. Opokua Kwapong, who lives alone in New York, was on a call with her sister, Adumea Sapong, in Manchester, when Mrs. Sapong noticed that her elder sister “didn't look right”. And she also noticed her sister's voice was indistinct(不清楚的). Ms. Kwapong said she had not realised how serious the situation was.
58-year-old Kwapong had just woken from an afternoon sleep when Mrs. Sapong called her on FaceTime. Ms. Kwapong said,“My sister looked at me and said she could see that my face didn't look right. She also said that I was slurring my words, but I thought she was making a fuss(大惊小怪)and I didn't believe her.”
Mrs. Sapong said, “When I called Kwapong, she said that she'd not been feeling well but she had been feeling tired and had been also having some difficulty walking. I said, ‘Perhaps you need to take some medicine.’ She tried to pick up a glass of water but wasn't able to. Then I noticed on the FaceTime video call that her face was drooping. I told her she needed to hang up and immediately see a doctor. She thought I was making a fuss so I then called one of my other sisters, who is a doctor, and she could hear her speaking and could also tell that her speech was indistinct. We both told her to call for help at once.”

If you're a male and you're reading this, congratulations! You're a survivor. According to statistics, you're more than twice as likely to die of skin cancer as a woman, and nine times more likely to die of AIDS. Assuming you make it to the end of your natural term, about 78 years for men in Australia, you'll die on average five years before a woman.
There're many reasons for this—typically, men take more risks than women and are more likely to drink and smoke but perhaps more importantly, men don't go to the doctor.
“Men aren't seeing doctors as often as they should,” says Dr. Gullotta. “This is particularly so for the over-40s, when diseases tend to strike. According to a recent survey, 95% of women aged between 15 and early 40s see a doctor once a year, compared to 70% of men in the same age group.
“A lot of men think they're unbeatable,” Gullotta says. “They only come in when a friend drops dead on the golf course and they think, ‘Geez, if it could happen to him...’”
Then there's the ostrich(鸵鸟) approach. “Some men are scared of what might be there and would rather not know,” says Dr. Ross Cartmill.
“Most men get their cars serviced more regularly than they service their bodies,” Cartmill says. He believes most diseases that commonly affect men could be addressed by preventive check-ups. “Prevention is cheaper in the long run than having to treat the diseases. Besides, the final cost is far greater, it's called premature death.”
