What may cause obesity
The passage talks about the reasons for obesity in America.

There are four reasons. They’re car culture, screenagers, fast food and supersizing.
It is a combination of the word “screen” and “teenager”, so it may mean the teenagers who spend lots of time in front of the screens.
We can see the picture of popcorn, so maybe the food is supersized.

Families spend an average of two hours a day in their cars. When they reach their destination, drive-through supermarkets restaurants and banks keep them comfortably in their seats.
The convenience and comfort of sitting in a car reduces the chances to walk and run and this contributes to obesity.

The average teenager watches 22 hours of television every week.
The average US home has 24 electronic gadgets.
Watching TV and using electronic gadgets make kids inactive and become couch potatoes. These inactive kids are at greater risk of becoming obese adults.

50% of meals are eaten outside home and more than three quarters of American teenagers eat a fast food meal at least once a week.
Americans eat fast food more often as they have less time to cook. However, fast food with a lot of fat and sugar, tends to make people overweight.

Movie watchers didn’t want to look greedy when they bought popcorn, but they didn’t mind buying a supersized bag of popcorn.
Food companies encourage Americans to consume more food by supersizing the portions of food.
As a result, people’s calorie consumption has risen significantly and Americans tend to become fat.

The future for America will be dark, because if people keep the unhealthy habits, an epidemic of illness may spread out and this could be the first generation that doesn’t outlive its parents.
The future for America will be bright, because some people start to make a difference. For example, Conchita, the obese child in health centres has figured out how to go on a diet in a healthy way by giving up fast food and doing more exercise.
Work in groups of four, analyze the reasons leading to Susan’s obesity according to her life photos and give proper suggestions to help her.
