The Kyiv City Ballet danced to a full theater in Paris for the company’s last show of its French tour. The tour has left the dancers without a place to go after the war started in Ukraine. In other times, performing at the Théatre du Chatelet would be a dream come true for the dancers. But with the ongoing war in their country, the dancers feel only a deep sadness.
“We are both physically and emotionally exhausted.” Ekaterina Kozlova said. She is the company’s assistant director. “Everyone in the ballet is worried about their families, loved ones, friends, colleagues at home. It’s been very difficult.”
The Théatre du Chatelet, in the center of Paris, offered them the stage on Tuesday for the group’s final show of a French tour. The dance director of the Paris Opera and some members of her company joined the Ukrainians for a class before performing several ballet classics together. They danced parts of Russian composer Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and The Nutcrackery.
For many of the dancers, the chance to train and dance was a way to think about “something other than the conflict in Ukraine,” Kozlova said. One of the dancers will be going to the Ukrainian border in the coming days to pick up her young daughter who was taken out of the country. Only some members of the company were traveling around France. Many of the ballet’s best dancers stayed behind, waiting to join their friends after they reached Paris.
“Most of our artists are detained in Paris.” Director Ivan Kozlova told the Paris crowd. The city of Paris and the ballet community have helped find temporary housing for the Ukrainian dancers who say they hope to continue dancing in France and elsewhere. The Chatelet theater offered the whole group a residency. But for now, Tuesday’s last-minute performance was their last. All sales from their performances will go to nongovernmental organizations collecting and sending humanitarian aid to Ukraine and neighboring countries.
4. What would the dancers feel about performing at the Théatre du Chatelet before the war
A. Pleased. B. Indifferent.
C. Sorrowful. D. Sympathetic.

In the research carried out at Tubingen University, scientists tracked the emotional(情绪的) responses of Facebook users in Germany and the US. They found that reading other people’s positive posts brought happiness to 64% of the people.
Think of it this way: Your good news positively influences your friends, who in turn positively influence their friends. With one positive post, you can brighten up the day of someone you have never met.
Researchers from four universities across the United States partnered with ehairmony, a popular dating website in America. They found that sharing positive news between partners increased happiness and life satisfaction.
Sharing your positive news also, research suggests, has direct benefits for municating a positive experience, you have had with another person heightens the powerful effect of the positive experience itself, because you get to relive the experience.
Then, how about negative emotions An online social network study in the US analyzed data from millions of Facebook users. And it found that rainfall would negatively affect the emotional content of people’s status updates(状态更新). And this influenced the negativity of posts made by friends in other cities who were not experiencing rainfall. Negativity, it showed, brings negativity.
Understanding the impact good and bad news can have on our moods is important for many reasons. The common aspect of these studies is that they show we want to hear good news and we are using social media as a medium to create and spread it.
Further evidence for this desire for cheering news can be found in the development of websites such as Positive News. It has become the world’s first crowd-funded(大众集资的) global media organization since being established in July. The website is now owned by 1,526 readers, journalists and supporters.
Sharing your good news might seem like a small gesture, but it can have a big effect and provide people with a life boat in the sea of negativity that is often mainstream media. Isn’t it we guided our own boat

D. Help us better understand the online emotional responses.
9. What can you gain from sharing your positive experiences
A. A chance to go through them again.
B. An opportunity to make new friends.
C. A different view on happiness and life satisfaction.
D. An obvious improvement in your communication skills.

After a day’s labor, Andreas Fichtner and his colleagues have spliced (绞接) together three segments of fibers, creating a 12.5-kilometer-long fiber-optic (光学的) cable. It will stay buried in the snow to spy on the activity of Grfmsvotn, a dangerous, glacier-covered volcano.
Fichtner, a geophysicist at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, in Zurich, is one of the researchers using fiber optics to take the pulse of our planet. Much of their work is done in remote places, from the tops of volcanoes to the bottoms of seas, where traditional monitoring is too costly or difficult.
The technique used by Fichtner’s team is called distributed acoustic sensing or DAS. “It’s almost like radar in the fiber,” says the physicist Giuseppe Marra of the United Kingdom’s National Physical Laboratory, in Teddington. While radar uses reflected radio waves to locate objects, DAS uses reflected light to detect events as varied as earthquake activity and moving traffic, and to determine where they occurred. Inside the cables are optical fibers. DAS involves shooting quick pulses of laser light down the fiber and detecting bits of light that scatter back to the laser source due to disturbances in the environment. When the earth’s surface vibrates and shifts, it pulls the cables, so a detector can identify these small changes.
The New York Times points out that although wireless and satellite technology are booming, good old-fashioned cables are still the most efficient way to send information across oceans. Repurposing cables could give scientists the ability to monitor high-risk zones that were previously hard to reach. They could help detect earthquakes and tsunamis a few seconds earlier than traditional warning systems.
In addition, fiber-optic cables could also help solve some of the biggest challenges for humans. In the recent years, scientists have started to use them to measure ocean waves and access fault (断层) information. It is believed that fiber-optic cables will serve to benefit us greatly in the future.
12. What is the purpose of the work of Fichtner’s team
A. To track volcanic activities. B. To strike oil under the sea.
C. To lengthen fiber-optic cables. D. To keep fibers covered in the snow.
13. What can we learn about the technique of DAS
A It determines when and where disasters occurs.
B. It uses radio waves to locate moving objects.
C. It improves the efficiency of transmitting light.
D. It detects tiny variation of the earth’s surface.
14. What does the underlined expression “Repurposing cables” probably mean
A. Recycling cables in new fields. B. Adapting cables for a new function.
C Installing cables beneath volcanoes. D. Promoting cables into massive production.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. DAS Is Feeling the Heartbeat of Volcanoes
B. Satellite Technology Is Booming in Our Times
C. Underground Cables Are Taking the Planet’s Pulse
D. Fiber-optic Cables Are Giving Us Insights into Earthquakes

Bill McDonnell was going crazy. Deer season had begun, but it was colder than usual. Up until his late 80s, Bill didn’t mind hunting in sub-zero temperature, but he had become slow in the past few years. The snow-covered mountains of the Shenandoah Valley were no place for a 92-year-old. He knew it, but still wanted to get outside.
It was about 7:30 a.m., still far below zero when the sun shone through trees. Bill had strict instructions from his wife Joanna to be out of woods by 2 p.m. and home by 3 p.m. — plenty of time before sunset, in case he missed the deadline, which he often did.
Not long into the hike, he came upon a path he didn’t remember. Maybe this was a secret route to the king of all deer. He took it.
It seemed that this path up the mountain had meandered (蜿蜒) quite a bit. After climbing to the top of a ridge (山脊), he figured that he could continue down into another valley for more hunt. But the farther he snaked down, the thinner and deeper it became. Before long, he was looking straight up from down the ravine (沟壑), which was higher than expected.
He decided to climb back up, careful with each step. He kept pushing upward until finally he could rest at the top for a while. By the time he got going again, it was nearly 2:45 p.m. This time he saw a trail (小路) with white marks. He remembered his daughter had mentioned it before, which he thought might take him back home more quickly.
He called his daughter, but she didn’t remember the trail, begging him not to try that. Still he wanted to go on the trail. “I’ve got it figured out,” he said. Then suddenly he realized he was talking to the air. His phone had died. He dug into his pants for the GPS device and pushed the “ON” button. Nothing. He had forgotten to charge it. But nothing could discourage him from going on this trail.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Initially the trail seemed to be heading downward in the correct direction home

5. What do we know about the Ukrainian dancers
A. They would leave Paris soon.

The technique used by Fichtner’s team is called distributed acoustic sensing, or DAS.
A. It determines when and where disasters occurs.
C. Installing cables beneath volcanoes. D. Promoting cables into massive production.
15 What is the best title for the text
A. DAS Is Feeling the Heartbeat of Volcanoes
B. Satellite Technology Is Booming in Our Times
C. Underground Cables Are Taking the Planet’s Pulse
D. Fiber-optic Cables Are Giving Us Insights into Earthquakes

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Initially the trail seemed to be heading downward in the correct direction home. However, soon, it began to turn away. So he decided to take another shortcut, stopping occasionally to adjust course. “No, I am not lost,” he told himself, determined that he wasn’t far off his destination. Eventually, the sun slipped down and the forest turned black. Without a flashlight, his trembling legs felt as if to have covered many miles. He tried to sleep, yet unable to quiet himself from imagining Joanna’s possible anxiety for safety. He got up to power through the darkness, only to realize he would end up in greater danger.
The following morning, Bill had woken before dawn, continued down his trail and still imagined his wife’s anxiety. The light was still bad, with each step taking thoughts to avoid injuries. Within 15 minutes, hope was found from the line of trees expected to reach. Bill, extremely excited about this breakthrough, was heading in that direction when he encountered a group of trackers who’d come to his rescue for the whole night. Secured and finally sent home, he was discouraged from another attempt to hike alone and he was persuaded to keep his promise. Yet still, deep in his wildest dream, there still lived a young boy, forever insisting on his crazy idea of walking in these woods alone.
